AppLovin alleges that Unity’s Ad Quality SDK accessed information associated with ads AppLovin won and served, and could use it to benefit competing advertising products. Unity says Ad Quality is a publisher-authorized tool for identifying harmful or inappropriate ads. A San Francisco court reportedly denied AppLovin’s request for a temporary restraining order on October 2, 2026; that decision did not resolve the underlying arbitration claims.

What AppLovin says Unity collected

In its filings, AppLovin alleges that Unity’s Ad Quality SDK accessed information tied to ads AppLovin won and served. The categories described in reporting include ad creative, user and device information, revenue, engagement, and details about auctions and mediation. AppLovin’s chief technology officer, Xiaochuan “Giovanni” Ge, stated in a declaration, as quoted by PPC Land: “Through its Ad Quality software, Unity reaches into AppLovin’s in-memory ad objects, calls AppLovin’s internal methods, and reads values from within AppLovin’s SDK.” This is AppLovin’s account in a declaration, not a court finding. PPC Land’s account of the filings describes the technical allegations and the limits of the public record.

AppLovin says the information could expose its auction performance and business decisions. It further alleges, “on information and belief,” that Unity used the information to train or improve competing advertising models. The available reporting does not establish that such use occurred.

Why Unity says it collects the information

Unity describes Ad Quality as a publisher-authorized product that helps identify inappropriate and harmful ads. It says publishers share the relevant data with Unity and disputes AppLovin’s characterization of the collection. A Unity letter dated September 4, as reported by PPC Land, said: “Ad Quality does not collect any data from AppLovin.” AppLovin’s opposing account is that the SDK accessed data associated with its ads.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Unity also said Ad Quality was not the driver of its improved advertising performance. A Unity spokesperson characterized the filing as “a classic case of a dominant incumbent resorting to litigation and intimidation to address increased competition and slowing growth.” That is Unity’s advocacy position, not a judicial determination about either company’s market position or conduct. Digiday’s September 29 report describes the companies’ public positions.

What AppLovin asked the court to do

AppLovin’s court application sought temporary restrictions on what its filing calls “Protected Data.” The requested terms included restricting collection, interception, extraction, use, or disclosure; disabling the relevant collection within five business days; and modifying the SDK within 30 days. Those were requested remedies, not requirements imposed by a judge.

AppLovin filed the court petition in aid of arbitration alongside a demand for JAMS arbitration. Reporting describes claims involving contract, trade secrets, interference, and unfair competition. PPC Land reports the court case as CPF-26-520212 and the JAMS reference as 5100004903; these are procedural identifiers, not evidence that the allegations are true.

Did the court stop Unity from collecting the data?

No. Dow Jones Newswires reported on October 2, 2026, that the San Francisco Superior Court denied AppLovin’s request for a temporary restraining order after a hearing. The report does not give the judge’s reasoning. The denial means the requested interim restrictions were not granted; it does not establish that Unity’s conduct was lawful or that AppLovin’s claims lack merit. The Dow Jones Newswires report published via MarketScreener says the underlying claims remained unresolved.

What remains disputed

The dispute turns on facts and agreements that have not been finally determined in the reporting available as of October 3, 2026. Key questions include what information the SDK accessed, whether publishers had authority to share or authorize the use of that information, what the companies’ agreements permit, and whether Unity used it to inform competing models.

  • Data source and scope: AppLovin says the information related to ads it won and served. Unity says Ad Quality receives information from publishers with their permission.
  • Purpose: AppLovin argues collection went beyond ad quality and could reveal auction performance or benefit competing models. Unity says the tool is for identifying harmful or inappropriate ads and denies that it drove its performance gains.
  • Contractual authority: AppLovin points to restrictions it says apply to auction and confidential data. Unity disputes that its publisher-authorized Ad Quality activity violates those restrictions. The full agreement is not available in the public account.
  • Potential remedy: AppLovin sought broad limits on its defined Protected Data and changes to the SDK. Reporting also describes earlier Unity proposals focused on disabling collection for MAX-mediated auctions under conditions; neither side’s proposed terms are a court finding.

Some filings are sealed or redacted, and the public accounts present competing positions rather than a complete evidentiary record. PocketGamer.biz also summarized the allegations, Unity’s response, and the relief AppLovin requested in its October 1, 2026 report.
