Applitools Eyes normally keeps a separate visual baseline for each browser and other environment details. Keep that default when you want to catch browser-specific visual regressions. To compare browsers against one shared reference, deliberately configure a Baseline Environment Name and use Layout matching; it checks page structure rather than full visual equivalence.

Choose what your browser tests should detect

Before changing settings, decide whether a browser is meant to be judged against its own accepted appearance or compared structurally with other environments. Those are different test goals, and sharing a baseline changes what a passing comparison means.

  • Browser-specific regression: Keep environment-specific baselines. Use Strict matching when the page is stable and you want close visual comparison in a particular browser and operating system.
  • Cross-browser structure: Set a shared Baseline Environment Name so runs use a reference associated with one environment, and select Layout matching. This is useful for checking element relationships and positions across environments, not for proving that every pixel or style is identical.
  • Known legitimate alternatives: Use baseline variations for a step that can correctly appear in multiple forms, such as an A/B-tested page, rather than loosening comparison for every browser or page.

How Eyes identifies and creates baselines

Applitools describes a baseline as an expected result for a particular test, application, and environment. Its baseline identity includes the application name, test name, operating system, viewport size, and browser. A new combination can therefore create a new baseline even if the same test has already run in another browser. Applitools’ baseline overview and its guide to running tests in multiple environments explain this default model.

On the initial run for an environment combination, Eyes establishes a baseline; later runs compare against it. In practical terms, Chrome and Firefox usually have their own references when you run the same test in each. This is not a duplicate-baseline error: it lets each browser be compared with its own accepted rendering.

Keep separate baselines for browser-specific regression

  1. Run the same visual test in each browser and environment you need to support, keeping application name, test name, operating system, and viewport settings intentional and consistent where appropriate.
  2. Let Eyes establish the reference for each previously unseen environment combination.
  3. Use Strict matching for stable content when the goal is close visual comparison within that browser and operating system. Matching options are described in Applitools’ match-level documentation.
  4. Review each run in Eyes Test Manager. Accept a difference only when it is an intended change to the expected appearance; reject it when it is an unwanted change. The Eyes workflow overview describes inspecting results and saving baseline updates.

This approach preserves browser-specific styling differences as part of each browser’s accepted reference. Its operational trade-off is that more environment-specific references require review and maintenance.

Use a shared baseline for cross-environment structure checks

Applitools provides a Baseline Environment Name to associate runs across browsers, operating systems, or viewport sizes with a reference environment. Set the name before opening the Eyes test, using the mechanism documented for your test framework and SDK version. The cross-environment testing guide describes the approach; its examples date from 2021, so verify the exact current method and API signature in the documentation for the SDK version you use rather than copying an old call unchanged.

  1. Choose the environment that should supply the shared reference, and run the test there to establish or confirm that reference.
  2. Configure the same Baseline Environment Name for the runs you intend to compare across environments, before opening each Eyes test.
  3. Select Layout matching for this cross-environment comparison.
  4. Run the tests and inspect the results in Eyes Test Manager. Accept only intentional changes and reject differences that indicate a defect.

Layout matching compares element structure and positioning while disregarding differences in text, graphics, color, and other styling. It can help identify layout changes despite expected rendering differences, but it cannot stand in for strict visual review of each browser’s typography, colors, imagery, or other styling. Applitools specifically recommends Layout for cross-environment tests because other match levels can flag noticeable environment differences. See the match-level guidance.

Use baseline variations for a step with multiple valid appearances

A baseline variation is an additional accepted reference image for a particular test step. A checkpoint passes if it matches any saved variation. This can fit a legitimate step-level alternative, such as an A/B result, without making unrelated pages or browser comparisons less precise. Applitools documents a limit of 20 variations per step; see its baseline variations documentation.

Compare the three baseline approaches

Approach Reference model Best fit Trade-off
Environment-specific baselines One baseline per test and environment combination, including browser, operating system, and viewport Browser-specific visual regression, particularly with Strict matching More individual references to review and maintain
Shared cross-environment baseline A Baseline Environment Name associates runs with one reference environment Structural comparison across browsers or other environments using Layout matching Layout ignores some content and styling differences, so it is not a substitute for strict same-environment visual review
Baseline variations Multiple acceptable reference images for one step Legitimate step-level alternatives Variants need deliberate management; the documented maximum is 20 per step

Troubleshoot unexpected baseline results

A browser run creates a new baseline

This is expected when the browser or another identity component—application, test, operating system, or viewport—forms a previously unseen environment combination. If you intended a shared comparison, configure the Baseline Environment Name before opening the test and confirm that the runs use the same intended name.

Cross-browser runs show many visual differences

Confirm that the test is configured for Layout matching when the goal is cross-environment structure. Strict matching is designed for close visual comparison and can report browser-dependent rendering differences. If appearance itself matters, retain separate references and inspect each browser on its own terms.

A change was accepted but should not have been

Review the test result in Eyes Test Manager before updating expectations. Reject an unintended difference to retain the prior expected image; accept an intentional change to make it part of the baseline. Avoid bulk acceptance as a substitute for deciding whether each change is correct.

A valid alternate rendering still fails

If the step legitimately has multiple expected forms, add and manage a baseline variation for that step. Check the documented 20-variation limit before relying on this for a highly variable result.

If you need a clean screenshot as a test input, report artifact, or quick visual reference rather than an Applitools baseline comparison, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one request. This does not replace Eyes’ baseline and matching workflow.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers.
