There is no defensible unconditional winner between Applied Materials (AMAT) and AMD for AI exposure in 2026. Applied Materials sells the equipment chipmakers use to manufacture semiconductors, so its prospects depend on customers’ investment in production capacity and process technology. AMD sells processors and accelerators, so its prospects depend more directly on product adoption, competition, and its ability to supply customers. Both reported strong recent growth, but those results do not settle which stock is the better buy at a given share price.

How do Applied Materials and AMD get AI exposure?

Applied Materials sells tools upstream of chip production

Applied Materials makes semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Its AI-related opportunity is indirect: demand for advanced computing can encourage chipmakers to invest in leading-edge foundry-logic, DRAM, and advanced packaging, which can support demand for equipment and services. The link runs through customers’ capital spending, facility readiness, and technology plans—not directly through sales of AI processors.

That position can expose Applied Materials to investment across multiple chipmaking customers and production areas. It also means its growth depends on when customers authorize and carry out equipment purchases. A strong end-market forecast does not automatically translate into equipment revenue in the same period.

AMD sells processors and accelerators into computing markets

AMD’s AI exposure is more direct. It sells data-center products, including EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators, as well as products for other computing markets. Its opportunity depends on customers adopting its products and platforms, AMD executing its product plans, and the company being able to obtain the manufacturing and other supply it needs.

That direct connection can make AMD’s results more sensitive to product demand and competitive outcomes. Strong data-center sales are evidence of current business momentum, not proof that AMD will maintain its growth rate or gain share in future periods.

What do the latest reported results show?

The quarters below are each company’s latest quarter in the cited results, but they cover different fiscal periods. GAAP and non-GAAP earnings are shown separately because they are different measures.

Rank #2
Company and period Revenue Profit and earnings measures AI-related operating evidence
Applied Materials, fiscal Q3 2026, quarter ended July 26, 2026 $9.115 billion, up 25% year over year GAAP net income: $2.538 billion; GAAP diluted EPS: $3.17; non-GAAP diluted EPS: $3.50; non-GAAP operating margin: 34.0%; non-GAAP free cash flow: $2.330 billion Management cited AI-related demand for materials engineering solutions and raised its expectations for Semiconductor Systems revenue in calendar 2026.
AMD, Q2 2026 $11.536 billion, up 50% year over year GAAP gross margin: 54%; GAAP operating income: $1.990 billion; GAAP net income: $2.297 billion; GAAP diluted EPS: $1.38; non-GAAP diluted EPS: $1.66 Data-center revenue more than doubled year over year and represented 58% of company revenue in the quarter.

These figures come from the companies’ 2026 results releases. Revenue growth rates are not a like-for-like test of the two businesses: the companies have different business models, fiscal periods, and revenue bases. AMD also noted that Q2 2025 included $800 million in inventory and related charges tied to U.S. export controls on its Instinct MI308 products. That prior-year charge is important context for AMD’s reported year-over-year comparison; the 50% growth figure alone does not show how growth would compare without it.

AMD CEO Lisa Su described the quarter as one of “record revenue and profitability,” citing more than doubled data-center revenue. That is management’s characterization of the company’s results, not an independent forecast. Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said the company was raising its Semiconductor Systems revenue expectations for calendar 2026 as AI adoption drove demand for its materials engineering solutions. That, too, is management’s outlook rather than a guaranteed outcome.

What do the available valuation figures say—and what don’t they say?

A Motley Fool comparison published October 1, 2026, citing Financial Modeling Prep, reported the following multiples. The figures are secondary and provider-dependent; they were not independently verified against a synchronized market-price and earnings snapshot for October 7, 2026.

Reported valuation measure Applied Materials AMD How to interpret it
Forward price-to-earnings ratio, as reported October 1, 2026 by The Motley Fool citing Financial Modeling Prep 23.4x 39.5x Forward P/E compares price with forecast earnings. The result depends on the share-price date, earnings estimates, and provider methodology.
Price-to-sales ratio, as reported October 1, 2026 by The Motley Fool citing Financial Modeling Prep 11.9x 24.2x Price-to-sales does not account for differences in profitability, margins, or the capital and operating needs behind revenue.

Those reported multiples make Applied Materials look less expensive on both measures, but they are not enough to establish that it is the better buy. A meaningful comparison requires figures measured on the same date and a consistent earnings basis. Forward P/E also relies on estimates that can change; price-to-sales can obscure whether revenue converts into earnings and cash flow. Since valuation changes with share prices and forecasts, an investor should verify a current, synchronized snapshot before relying on a relative-multiple conclusion.

Which risks matter most to each investment case?

Applied Materials: customer spending and production capacity

Applied Materials’ results depend on semiconductor manufacturers’ equipment budgets and their ability to install or repurpose cleanroom capacity. Management discussed cleanroom space as a pacing factor and later reported increased delivery requests. That provides context for the company’s outlook, but it remains management’s account of customer demand; it does not establish when or how much planned spending will become revenue.

In a May 14, 2026 call script, Applied Materials management forecast that leading-edge foundry-logic, DRAM, and advanced packaging would account for more than 80% of year-over-year growth in total wafer fab equipment spending in calendar 2026, and forecast growth of more than 30% in Applied’s semiconductor equipment business that year. These were forecasts made in May, not measured calendar-year results. The later fiscal Q3 release raised the company’s Semiconductor Systems expectations in broad terms; that update should not be mistaken for confirmation that every part of the earlier forecast has been achieved.

AMD: competition, supply, and policy exposure

AMD’s June 27, 2026 quarter filing identifies competitive markets, semiconductor cyclicality, export restrictions, reliance on third-party manufacturers and suppliers, and the possibility that a small number of customers account for a substantial share of revenue and receivables among its risks. These are company disclosures of potential risks, not predictions that any particular event will occur. They matter because a direct product-demand opportunity can still be constrained by competitive execution, supply availability, customer concentration, or policy changes.

How should an investor choose between them?

  • Consider Applied Materials if your thesis centers on semiconductor manufacturing investment. The case depends on chipmakers funding equipment, process transitions, and capacity, with AI demand supporting selected manufacturing areas.
  • Consider AMD if your thesis centers on adoption of its computing products. The case depends on sustained customer demand for its processors and accelerators, competitive execution, and the ability to deliver products at scale.
  • Compare valuation only after aligning dates and definitions. Use share prices from the same date and a consistent approach to earnings estimates; do not treat the October 1 secondary multiples as verified current figures.
  • Decide which uncertainty you are willing to underwrite. Applied Materials’ key exposure is customers’ equipment spending and production readiness; AMD’s is more directly tied to product adoption, competition, and supply.

The available evidence supports two distinct AI-related investment theses, not a certain winner. Applied Materials reported substantial fiscal Q3 2026 growth, while AMD reported faster year-over-year revenue growth in its Q2 2026 release, with a prior-year export-control charge complicating that comparison. Neither growth rate predicts future returns. A “better buy” judgment therefore depends on an investor’s view of each business and on a current, comparable valuation—not on AI exposure or one quarter’s results alone.
