Apple’s Self Service Repair program now gives people in Europe an official way to diagnose and repair certain iPhone, Mac, Studio Display and iPad hardware. Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair runs from a second Apple device and can identify parts that may need attention before you order components or open a device.
The important limitation is skill, not geography: Apple supplies manuals, genuine parts and specialized tools for people with relevant repair experience. It directs beginners and anyone unsure of the procedure to authorized professional service.
What changed for European users
Apple expanded Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair to 32 European countries on June 26, 2024, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Netherlands. The announcement described support across 33 countries and 24 languages for supported iPhone, Mac and Studio Display models.

Self Service Repair itself began in April 2022. It is not a general license to repair every Apple product. Availability depends on the exact model, country and language, and Apple changes the catalog as new procedures are added.
What Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair does
Diagnostics is a guided software session, not a replacement for mechanical repair skill. You start a session on a second Apple device, follow the onscreen instructions and receive an assessment of the device and parts that may need replacement.
How a typical session works
- Identify the exact iPhone, Mac or Studio Display model and the symptom you are investigating.
- Put the affected device into the state requested by Apple’s instructions.
- Use a second Apple device to host the Diagnostics session.
- Follow the onscreen tests and record which component or function is flagged.
- Use the result with the model-specific repair manual to decide whether a repair is appropriate.
The result is an aid to diagnosis, not a guarantee that replacing one part will resolve every fault. A problem can involve more than one component, a damaged connector, liquid exposure or software that is unrelated to the suspected hardware.

Do you need a second Apple device?
For the Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair workflow, yes: the session is started on a second Apple device. That host device displays the instructions while the device being tested runs the checks.
The second device is a Diagnostics requirement, not a blanket requirement for every physical repair. You still need the manual, compatible parts and the specified tools for the particular model, and some repairs require a post-repair software step.
What you can repair through the program
iPhone, Mac and Studio Display
Apple’s manuals and parts catalog are model-specific. Depending on the product, the catalog can include batteries, displays, cameras, charging-related components and other assemblies. The presence of a Self Service Repair page for one model does not mean that the same repair is offered for an earlier or newer model.

iPad coverage added in 2025
On May 28, 2025, Apple added iPad Self Service Repair for iPad Air with M2 and later, iPad Pro with M4, iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPad with A16. The announced iPad procedures cover displays, batteries, cameras and external charging ports, with Diagnostics support and rental toolkits.

Parts, manuals and tools
The program provides access to genuine Apple parts, repair manuals and the tools used by Apple Stores and authorized service providers. Apple also announced support for used genuine parts on April 11, 2024. Compatibility must still be checked against the exact model and procedure; a part that fits physically may not be the correct component for the repair.

Because Apple adds and retires procedures, check the current Self Service Repair catalog for your country and model before buying a part or renting tools. The June 2024 country figure does not promise that every listed product or language is available in every one of those countries.

Before disassembly
- Confirm the model identifier, storage or cellular variant where relevant, and the exact symptom.
- Read the complete Apple manual, including warnings, replacement adhesives and required torque or handling steps.
- Check that the part is listed for your country and exact model.
- Arrange the specified tools, either by purchase or through Apple’s rental-tool option where offered.
- Back up data and understand that opening a device can create additional damage or affect its water-resistance seals.
During the repair
Follow the manual in order rather than treating the procedure as a generic battery or screen swap. Apple-designed tools can be heavy, specialized or difficult to use safely without experience. Disconnect power as instructed, protect the battery and cables, and stop if a component does not separate as the manual describes.
After the repair
Some Macs require System Configuration after hardware replacement. Apple streamlined that process for the M3 MacBook Pro and iMac models announced on February 29, 2024. System Configuration is the final software step that completes or verifies a repair; it is separate from the physical installation and should not be skipped when the manual requires it.

Is Self Service Repair safe for beginners?
Apple’s stated position is that people without relevant repair experience should use certified professional service. That advice reflects the risks of lithium-ion batteries, delicate flex cables, adhesives, specialized fixtures and post-repair configuration.

Diagnostics can reduce guesswork, but it cannot make an unsafe repair safe. If a battery is swollen, the device has liquid damage, screws or cables are missing, or the manual calls for equipment you cannot use confidently, professional service is the safer choice.
Why the European expansion matters
The change is both geographic and procedural. European owners can use an official troubleshooting workflow before committing money and time to a replacement part, while experienced users gain access to the same class of genuine components and documentation Apple makes available for the program.

In 2025, AppleCare vice president Brian Naumann said the company wanted products to last as long as possible and to expand repair access without compromising safety, security or privacy.
How to decide whether to repair yourself
- Check eligibility. Find the exact model in Apple’s current Self Service Repair catalog for your country.
- Run Diagnostics. Use a second Apple device to determine whether the reported symptom points to a replaceable component.
- Price the complete job. Include the genuine part, tools or rental, consumables and the value of your time.
- Assess the risk. If the repair involves a swollen battery, liquid damage, extensive adhesive work or unfamiliar tools, choose professional service.
- Plan configuration. Confirm whether the model requires System Configuration or another software completion step.
For an experienced hobbyist with a supported model, the European expansion makes Apple’s own diagnostic and repair information materially more accessible. For a first repair, the same expansion is most useful as a way to understand the likely fault before handing the device to a qualified technician.
