Reports say some upcoming LG-made accessories for Apple Home may let you tap an iPhone to set them up over NFC, potentially before they have power. That feature has not been confirmed by Apple or verified in the opened reporting, so treat it as a leak—not a capability you can rely on today. Apple’s documented Matter setup process is different: scan the accessory’s setup code with an iPhone.
What “second-party” means
“Second-party” is a reported software designation for selected accessories built by outside manufacturers with closer Apple integration. It does not mean Apple is making the products. Reports associate LG with a broader planned range and Schneider Electric with a smaller set of entries found in iOS 27.2 code.
The reports do not establish that every listed identifier will become a retail product, nor that all second-party accessories will share the same setup method.
The reported iPhone feature: tap-to-setup over NFC
The feature behind the headline appears to be NFC tap-to-setup: tap an iPhone against an accessory to begin setup, possibly before the accessory has power. That claim surfaced in a Reddit search-result snippet, but it was not independently verified in the opened reporting or an Apple product document. Apple has not publicly confirmed it in the sources available here.

Consequently, the details remain unknown: supported iPhone models and iOS versions, whether setup occurs in Apple Home or a manufacturer app, what “before it has power” means in practice, and whether the accessory needs any power at all during the process. Do not assume this feature will work with an existing HomeKit or Matter device.
How Apple’s documented Matter setup works today
Apple’s developer documentation describes a code-scanning process for Matter accessories, not the alleged NFC method. An iOS app requests permission through MatterSupport, iOS presents a camera viewfinder, and the user scans the accessory’s Matter setup code. The iPhone can then provision Wi-Fi or Thread credentials as appropriate, and the accessory can be used with Apple Home. See Apple’s Matter support documentation for iOS.

- When iOS presents the camera viewfinder, scan the accessory’s Matter setup code.
- Follow the on-screen steps; iPhone can provision Wi-Fi or Thread credentials as appropriate.
This published procedure is a useful comparison, but it does not confirm or disprove the reported special setup feature. The reports do not establish whether second-party accessories will also support standard Matter onboarding or work across other Matter ecosystems.

LG: a reported wider lineup
A 9to5Mac report dated October 6, 2026, summarizing Bloomberg reporting, says LG and Apple have worked together on connected-home products. The planned devices are reportedly LG-branded, with LG handling manufacturing and support:

The report says LG had sought regulatory approvals and that consumers should not expect the products for at least a few more months as of October 6, 2026. The regulatory filings cited in the article did not themselves mention Apple, so the Apple connection and product plans remain reported rather than officially announced. Schneider Electric: software entries, not a confirmed retail range
A separate report says iOS 27.2 code contains Schneider-branded second-party accessory entries, including a thermostat and a temperature/humidity sensor. Matter Alpha describes ten identifiers in the iOS table—six associated with LG and four with Schneider—but identifiers are not ten confirmed consumer products. The four Schneider entries are described as a thermostat, a thermostat QA variant, a temperature/humidity sensor, and an unidentified accessory. What to check before buying or planning a setup
Until Apple or the manufacturers publish product details, the reported NFC feature should not be a reason to buy an accessory or delay setting up a current one. For any announced device, verify these specifics in its official instructions:

- Which iPhone models and iOS versions are supported.
- Whether setup uses NFC, a Matter code, or both—and whether it runs through Apple Home or a manufacturer app.
- Whether the accessory needs external power during setup and what “without power” actually describes.
- Whether the device supports Matter and can be added to ecosystems beyond Apple Home.
- Its confirmed retail availability, price, and support arrangements.
As of the October 6, 2026 LG report, the products were described as months from reaching consumers; the reviewed sources do not confirm Schneider pricing, timing, or purchase channels. Existing options such as Eve Thermostat for water-based underfloor heating are separate products, not part of the reported second-party lineup, and there is no evidence here that they have the alleged NFC feature.
