Apple’s reported Magic Keyboard refresh changes the look of selected US English key labels: words printed along key edges have been replaced with symbols. It does not establish a new typing technology or a mechanical redesign. The changes vary by keyboard size, and the US English numeric-keypad model without Touch ID was reported as unchanged.

Which key labels changed?

MacRumors reported on August 25, 2026, that refreshed US English Magic Keyboards use glyphs on selected keys that previously had edge text. The report describes a visual labeling update, similar to one already made on recent MacBook keyboards—not a change to how the keys work.

Compact Magic Keyboard

On the compact Magic Keyboard and compact Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, the affected keys are Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Return, and Delete. Their legends use symbols instead of the previous edge text, according to MacRumors’ report.

Numeric-keypad models

Full-size versions with numeric keypads receive those compact-layout changes plus symbol legends on Home, Page Up, Page Down, End, Clear, and Enter. MacRumors names the standard Magic Keyboard and Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, as well as white-key and black-key Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad versions, among the refreshed products.

#1 Best Overall
Apple Magic Keyboard - US English , Bluetooth
  • Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
  • It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
  • It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
  • It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.

Which model was reported unchanged?

The US English Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad that does not have Touch ID was reported to retain text labels on the corresponding keys. So buyers choosing a full-size keyboard should check both the numeric keypad and Touch ID configuration rather than assuming every keypad model received the new legends.

Did Apple change anything besides the labels?

The available product specifications do not establish any internal or functional change in the 2026 refresh. Apple’s Touch ID Magic Keyboard technical specifications describe the general USB-C model introduced in 2024: Touch ID for logins and purchases, wireless rechargeable operation, automatic pairing, and USB-C charging and pairing. That page is a baseline specification, not a changelog for the reported 2026 update.

Apple’s US English USB-C Magic Keyboard listing confirms the product name and layout, but does not confirm whether a particular unit or third-party seller’s stock has the revised keycaps.

How to check a listing before buying

  1. Confirm the layout. Make sure the listing is for US English if you want the specific legend changes described in MacRumors’ report.
  2. Choose the size. A compact keyboard has no numeric keypad; full-size keypad models have the additional Home, Page Up, Page Down, End, Clear, and Enter legend changes.
  3. Check Touch ID. Distinguish models with Touch ID from the US English numeric-keypad model without it, which was reported unchanged.
  4. Inspect the actual keycap photos. Apple’s general product page does not identify a unit’s refresh revision, so verify the pictured legends with the seller before ordering, especially from third-party stock.
  5. Choose the appearance. The report names both white-key and black-key Touch ID numeric-keypad versions; confirm the exact color and configuration shown in the listing.

What the refresh means for buyers

If the symbols are easier for you to recognize than edge-printed words, the reported update may be a small usability preference worth checking in product photos. If you already own a Magic Keyboard, the report provides no basis to expect different typing behavior or new capabilities from the legend change alone. Treat the exact model coverage as MacRumors reporting: Apple’s cited support and store pages do not announce the 2026 refresh.
