Apple’s N1 wireless chip debuted in the iPhone 17 family, and a report says it is also in the M4 iPad Air. That is an early sign of use beyond iPhone—not proof that N1 is headed for every Apple product. The chip handles wireless connectivity, including Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread; it is not the iPhone’s cellular modem or main processor.
What is Apple’s N1 chip?
N1 is Apple’s wireless networking chip. Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications list it alongside Wi‑Fi 7 (802.11be) with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 6 and Thread networking technology.
Those are wireless networking capabilities, distinct from the phone’s cellular bands and 5G specifications. Apple’s published specifications confirm the supported technologies, but do not describe N1’s internal architecture or fabrication process.
What does the N1 chip do?
N1 supports the iPhone’s Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and Thread connections. Tom’s Hardware reports that Apple says its custom networking silicon improves performance and power efficiency for activities such as AirDrop and Personal Hotspot. Those are Apple’s stated benefits, not a separately established result in that report.

N1’s presence also does not mean Wi‑Fi performance is determined by the chip alone. Results depend on factors such as the access point, network conditions, device and region.
Which Apple devices have the N1 chip?
Apple’s specifications name N1 in the iPhone 17 family. Separately, Tom’s Guide reports that the M4 iPad Air also uses N1, with Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. This report supports an example beyond iPhone, but it is not a complete, official inventory of Apple devices with the chip.

Does N1 make Wi‑Fi faster?
Third-party results suggest the answer depends on the comparison. A TechRadar report published November 19, 2025, summarizing Ookla Speedtest Intelligence data from the six weeks after the iPhone 17 family became available, gave these median download results:

In the same TechRadar report, global median upload speeds were 103.26 Mbps for the iPhone 17 family, 94.58 Mbps for Pixel 10 Pro and 129.22 Mbps for Xiaomi 15T Pro. These are Ookla data as reported by TechRadar, not controlled tests isolating N1’s contribution; they do not show that N1 alone caused the differences.

TechRadar also reports that N1’s channel width is capped at 160 MHz, while some Android devices support 320 MHz. The report relays Ookla’s view that this may make little practical difference for most people because few have 320 MHz-compatible routers. It is not evidence that all Android phones are faster or that iPhone owners need to replace their routers.
Do you need a Wi‑Fi 7 router for iPhone 17?
No. The iPhone 17 supports Wi‑Fi 7, but that specification does not make a Wi‑Fi 7 router a requirement. You can use the phone with your existing compatible Wi‑Fi network; a newer router matters only if you want to use the capabilities it offers and your network setup supports them.

Will Apple use N1 in more devices?
That is plausible, but not confirmed as a company-wide plan. N1 in the iPhone 17 family and the reported M4 iPad Air shows use across at least two product categories. Apple’s custom wireless silicon could make broader adoption possible, but the available device evidence does not establish that N1 is in every Apple product or provide an official roadmap for future Macs, watches or other devices.
