The MacBook Neo is Apple’s first explicitly low-cost Mac laptop, but $599 was its U.S. launch price, not a guaranteed current price. Apple announced it on March 4, 2026, with a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, A18 Pro chip, 8GB unified memory and a 256GB SSD in the reviewed base configuration. Current review and buying-guide coverage reports a $699 price, so check the live Apple or retailer listing, your country and the exact configuration before comparing it with a Windows laptop or Chromebook.
What the MacBook Neo is—and what the $599 figure means
Apple positions MacBook Neo for everyday computing: web browsing, documents, email, video calls, streaming and light creative work. It is designed to attract people who would normally consider an inexpensive Windows laptop or Chromebook rather than a higher-priced MacBook Air.
The $599 figure is the U.S. launch price. Apple’s UK launch announcement listed £599, demonstrating that launch pricing varies by market. Independent coverage now reports $699 pricing in some buying guides and reviews. Discounts, configuration and availability can change, so treat $599 as historical launch context rather than a standing worldwide price.
At launch, Apple senior vice president of Hardware Engineering John Ternus described it as “Built from the ground up to be more affordable for even more people, MacBook Neo is a laptop only Apple could create.” That is Apple’s positioning, not an independent value verdict.

How fast is it compared with budget Windows laptops?
Apple claims MacBook Neo is up to 50% faster for everyday web browsing and up to three times faster for specified on-device AI workloads than a PC using the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5. Apple’s comparison used preproduction Neo systems and a production Windows 11 Home PC, each with 8GB memory and 256GB storage, in tests run during January and February 2026. Apple also identified particular benchmark software and versions in its footnotes.
Those figures are company-run, limited comparisons—not a universal result for every budget Windows laptop. Processor model, cooling, storage, software, power settings and price can differ substantially between Windows machines. They should be read as Apple’s claim for the tested systems, not as an independent benchmark ranking.

TechRadar compared the Neo’s proposition with budget models such as the Acer Aspire Go 15 and HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch. Its assessment found the Neo’s construction and display compelling at the price, while warning that the fixed 8GB of unified memory can limit heavy multitasking and demanding creative work. Macworld judged it capable for general productivity, documents, browsing, email, video calls and basic media editing.
Where the Neo is a strong fit
Everyday productivity
For a browser, office documents, email, streaming and video meetings, the Neo supplies the familiar macOS workflow in a small aluminum laptop. The 1080p camera, keyboard and trackpad address common school, home and office tasks without requiring a separate webcam or mouse.
People who want macOS specifically
If you already use an iPhone or other Apple devices, macOS may be the deciding factor. Choose it for the operating system, Apple software and ecosystem—not simply because an Apple logo makes it faster than every Windows alternative.

Basic media editing
Macworld considers the reviewed configuration suitable for basic media editing. That does not make it a workstation: sustained, complex video projects, large photo catalogs, 3D work and other memory-intensive tasks are more likely to expose the 8GB limit.

Where a budget Windows laptop or Chromebook may be better
Windows-only software and peripherals
Before switching, list the applications, games, drivers and workplace tools you use. A Mac version may not exist, may have different features or may require a compatibility layer. If your school or employer mandates Windows software, a Windows laptop is the lower-risk choice.
Heavy multitasking and creative workloads
The base Neo’s 8GB unified memory is fixed. You cannot later add RAM to accommodate larger projects or more simultaneous applications. A Windows laptop with more memory—or a configurable Mac at a higher price—may last longer for demanding use.

Large local libraries
The reviewed base model has a 256GB SSD. Games, video footage, photos and offline files can consume that capacity quickly. Budget a compatible external drive or compare a higher-capacity configuration before buying.
Ports, charging and what is in the box
The two USB-C ports are not equivalent. Apple specifies one as USB 3 and the other as USB 2; external-display support is on the USB 3 port only. Check which port you use for a monitor or high-speed storage.
Macworld reports that the U.S. package includes a 20W power adapter and USB-C cable. Apple does not include the adapter in the UK or Europe, according to the available product information. Macworld also reports that the Neo does not support Apple’s specified fast charging. Confirm the local box contents and exact model before buying a charger; a USB-C charger may be an additional cost outside the U.S.

Battery life: a ceiling, not a guarantee
Apple rates MacBook Neo for up to 16 hours. The company’s footnote says this comes from preproduction systems tested for web browsing and video streaming, and that actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Brightness, wireless activity, video calls, software and workload can all reduce runtime. Treat 16 hours as a controlled maximum claim rather than a promise for every school or workday.

Should you switch from a Windows laptop?
- Inventory your software. Check every required work, school, creative and gaming application for a macOS version and feature parity.
- Compare the complete purchase. Use the current Neo price, memory, storage, charger inclusion and any monitor or adapter costs—not the $599 launch headline alone.
- Test your workload against 8GB. If you routinely keep many browser tabs open while editing media or running virtual machines, the fixed memory is a warning sign.
- Check your ports. Confirm that your monitor works through the USB 3 port and plan for hubs or adapters if your accessories use USB-A, HDMI or memory cards.
- Choose by workload. Pick Neo for macOS and efficient everyday use; stay with Windows or choose a different configuration when software compatibility, expandability or sustained heavy work matters more.
Verdict: who should buy the MacBook Neo?
The MacBook Neo is most convincing as a compact, lower-cost entry to macOS for browsing, documents, calls, streaming and light editing. Its aluminum construction and Liquid Retina display are notable strengths in the budget conversation, while its fixed 8GB memory, 256GB base storage and limited port selection define the compromises.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is not automatically the best budget laptop. Compare the live price in your region, the exact configuration and included charger with current Windows and Chromebook models. If your applications run on macOS and your workload is ordinary rather than memory-intensive, Neo can be a sensible switch. If you need Windows-only software, more memory, larger local storage or broader connectivity, a competing configuration may be the better purchase even when its headline price looks similar.
