Yes. An Apple Watch SOS alert helped trigger a search-and-rescue response after three skiers got into trouble in Washington’s Stevens Pass backcountry on January 22, 2025. One skier fell about 1,000 feet and injured a leg; another fell roughly 500 feet. Rescuers located and hoisted all three to safety, though reports do not identify the watch model or establish that the watch itself provided the satellite connection.
What happened near Stevens Pass
The incident occurred near Union Peak in the Stevens Pass backcountry. KIRO reported that the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office received an Apple Watch SOS alert reporting an approximately 1,000-foot fall and a leg injury. The office requested help from King County Air Support, and rescuers reached the steep terrain after sunset. KIRO’s report attributes the alert to an Apple Watch.
KPTV, citing the King County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit, reported that a second skier fell about 500 feet, sustaining a twisted knee and broken wrist. The third skier was uninjured. A helicopter crew hoisted the group, and all three were airlifted to safety. KPTV’s account provides those additional injury details.

The skiers were outside ordinary cell-phone range. The alert gave authorities actionable information about the approximate fall and an injury, helping prompt a search in difficult terrain. In an ABC News report, King County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Stanley said: “Without some sort of satellite communication device, this story could have a very different ending, a very tragic ending because of the temperatures that the skiers were skiing in and the distance they were away from any kind of civilization.” ABC News quoted Stanley.

The rescue also depended on the people and equipment that responded. King County describes its Air Support Unit as providing 24/7 helicopter and drone support for wilderness search and rescue and interagency missions. The unit’s description explains its role; the ski group’s extraction was a coordinated law-enforcement rescue, not a device-only outcome.
Did the watch send an SOS over satellite?
The available reports do not identify the Apple Watch model, its settings, whether it was paired with an iPhone, or the precise communication path used for the January 2025 alert. The incident is evidence that an Apple Watch SOS alert assisted a rescue, not proof that every Apple Watch can independently contact emergency services over satellite.

Fall Detection and satellite-dependent features
Apple documents Fall Detection for Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 4 or later, and Ultra models. A detected hard fall can prompt an alert to the wearer; if the wearer does not respond within the specified interval, the watch can call emergency services and notify emergency contacts with location information, subject to feature availability and setup. Apple says that, in supported conditions, fall notifications may be communicated through Emergency SOS via satellite when the user is outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage and has a compatible iPhone 14 or later or Apple Watch Ultra 3, with a clear line of sight to a satellite. Apple’s Fall Detection guidance describes supported models and behavior.
Apple Watch Ultra 3
In its September 9, 2025 announcement, Apple described built-in two-way satellite communications on Apple Watch Ultra 3. Apple says the watch can text emergency services and, if it detects a hard fall while the wearer is unresponsive off-grid, automatically send situation and location information when satellite line of sight is available. Those later-announced capabilities should not be projected onto the unidentified watch involved in the January rescue. Apple’s Ultra 3 announcement sets out the model-specific feature.

What to check before relying on Apple Watch in the backcountry
Fall Detection can add a safety layer, but its usefulness away from cell service depends on the watch and paired devices, feature setup, coverage, satellite access and unobstructed line of sight where satellite messaging applies. Before a trip, check Apple’s current compatibility and availability information for your devices and region, and understand how emergency calls and contact notifications work on your configuration.
- Check compatibility: Fall Detection is documented for Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 4 or later, and Ultra models. Satellite-related support has separate device and coverage requirements.
- Confirm setup: Review Fall Detection, Emergency SOS, Medical ID and emergency contacts before leaving coverage. Do not assume an alert will be sent if a feature is unavailable, disabled or unable to connect.
- Plan for off-grid communication: If you routinely travel beyond cellular coverage, consider how a dedicated satellite communicator fits your needs. The sources on this rescue do not provide a controlled comparison of Apple Watch and dedicated devices.
- Account for field conditions: Cold, battery state, terrain, line of sight, gloves and the ability to interact with a device affect practical use. Carry a plan that does not depend on a single device or rescue trigger.
What this rescue does—and does not—show
The alert helped get the group’s situation to authorities, and an air-support team ultimately located and extracted all three skiers. It illustrates why emergency communication can matter when a party is beyond cell-phone range. One rescue does not establish a general success rate for Apple Watch alerts, and the reporting does not establish which watch model or exact satellite configuration was involved.
