“Apple Watch 9” means Apple Watch Series 9, Apple’s smartwatch introduced in 2023. It came in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes, with aluminum or stainless-steel cases and GPS or GPS + Cellular versions. Its key features include the S9 SiP chip, an Always-On display, and Double Tap.
What is Apple Watch Series 9?
Apple’s formal name for the model is Apple Watch Series 9. Apple introduced it in 2023, with availability beginning September 22 that year, according to its launch announcement.
Series 9 is a smartwatch for notifications, activity and health-related features, and other watch functions. Apple’s technical specifications list two case sizes, 41 mm and 45 mm, and aluminum or stainless-steel case options. The configurations include GPS and GPS + Cellular; exact finishes and specifications depend on the size and case material.
What are the main Apple Watch Series 9 features?
S9 SiP and on-device Siri
The Series 9 uses Apple’s S9 SiP, with a 64-bit dual-core processor, a 4-core Neural Engine, and 64 GB capacity. Apple highlighted faster on-device Siri, including the ability to access and log health data, as a launch feature.

Always-On display
Apple lists an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED display, with a maximum brightness of up to 2,000 nits and a minimum of 1 nit. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Double Tap
Double Tap lets a user tap the thumb and index finger of the watch hand together to perform common actions when the display is awake. Apple made the gesture available on Series 9 with watchOS 10.1 on October 25, 2023. It does not work in every app or situation: Apple lists exceptions including ECG, Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen, Sleep Focus, Maps during navigation, SOS features, and workouts during active sessions. Health, activity, and safety sensors
Apple lists an electrical heart sensor, a third-generation optical heart sensor, temperature sensing, a compass, an always-on altimeter, a high-g accelerometer, a high-dynamic-range gyroscope, and an ambient-light sensor. Temperature sensing is not intended for medical use.
Feature availability can depend on region and the specific unit. Apple’s U.S. specifications say Blood Oxygen measurement is unavailable on Apple-sold U.S. units beginning January 18, 2024, and identify affected units by part numbers ending in LW/A. Apple also notes that features and services may vary by country or region.

Which sizes and configurations were available?
Apple’s specifications describe the following broad configuration choices. Finishes vary by case material: aluminum was listed in Pink, Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and (PRODUCT)RED; stainless steel in Gold, Silver, and Graphite.
- Case size: 41 mm or 45 mm.
- Case material: aluminum or stainless steel.
- Connectivity: GPS or GPS + Cellular.
These are the model’s listed configuration options, not a guarantee that every size, finish, or connectivity version remains available for sale. Apple lists different weights by configuration; for example, 41 mm aluminum GPS weighs 31.9 g, while 45 mm aluminum GPS weighs 38.7 g.

What does “Apple Watch 9” not tell you?
The shorthand identifies the Series 9 generation, but it does not specify the case size, case material, connectivity, or regional feature configuration. Those details matter when identifying a particular watch or assessing whether a feature is available on it. Check the exact listing or device information rather than assuming all Series 9 watches have identical specifications.
