A man said his Apple Watch Series 7 became unusually hot, showed a temperature warning, and later shattered and exploded. He went to an emergency room because he feared lead exposure; the reports do not say that doctors confirmed lead poisoning. The incident was reported in October 2022, and the technical cause was not established.
What happened to the Apple Watch Series 7?
In accounts reported by 9to5Mac and AppleInsider on October 5, 2022, the owner said his Series 7 became much hotter than usual while he was wearing it. He saw a watchOS warning about “needing to shut down due to its temperature” and noticed that the back of the watch had cracked.
The following morning, he said the display had shattered. When he picked up the watch, it made “crackling sounds” and then “exploded” as he threw it out a window. Those words describe the owner’s account as reported by 9to5Mac; the reports do not establish a technical finding about what happened inside the device.

Did Apple confirm a battery defect or issue a recall?
No technical root cause is established in the available reports. Coverage characterized the event as an apparent or alleged battery failure, but that is not the same as Apple confirming a defective battery. The reports also do not identify a recall or dedicated service program for this specific incident.
The owner said Apple Support escalated his call to a manager, opened an investigation case, and told him “not to touch the watch until he heard back from Apple Support,” as HotHardware reported. The reports do not provide a later technical finding from Apple.
