Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 in the U.S. and adds Apple’s new health-sensing system, a Readiness score, updated step tracking, and audio-intelligence features. Apple lists 42mm and 46mm sizes, aluminum, titanium, and ceramic cases, and GPS or GPS + Cellular options. The right choice depends mainly on wrist fit, preferred finish and weight, and whether you need connectivity without your iPhone nearby.
What’s new on Apple Watch Series 12?
Apple announced Series 12 on September 9, 2026, with in-store availability beginning September 18. The changes are concentrated in health sensing, training guidance, battery and charging claims, and software features. The specifications below are Apple’s announcements and estimates, not independent test results.
Health sensing and heart-rate tracking
Apple says Series 12 pairs new optical and electrical heart sensors with its S11 chip. Apple states that the watch measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and measures heart-rate variability (HRV) up to 24 times more often than its predecessor.
Apple also says a study involving more than 1,000 participants compared its watch with leading wearables and found Apple Watch had the highest heart-rate accuracy in that study. That is a company-reported result; the cited announcement does not establish an independently published or peer-reviewed study. Apple’s health and fitness features are for wellness purposes, not diagnosis or medical treatment.

Readiness score
The new Readiness feature combines recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score into a score from 0 to 10. Apple says it can offer prompts such as “Recover,” “Pace Yourself,” “Ready,” or “Go For It,” and updates as new data arrives. Treat it as a wellness and training cue—not a medical assessment, a guarantee that you are ready to exercise, or a substitute for how you feel.
Step tracking
Apple says it redesigned its pedometer model using machine-learning algorithms to improve step counts and indoor walk/run distance measurement. Apple calls Series 12’s step tracking the most accurate of any smartwatch. That superlative is Apple’s claim, not an independently established comparison in the cited launch materials.
Audio Intelligence and Siri features
Apple describes several audio and assistant features: Sound Recognition alerts for sounds such as alarms, sirens, doorbells, or a baby crying; Live Rewind, which displays a text snippet from the previous 15 seconds; Siri Recap, which creates a high-level conversation summary; and Shazam for identifying nearby music. Apple says Audio Intelligence is opt-in and includes privacy protections.

Apple says Live Rewind and Siri Recap are beta features expected later in 2026. They require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, excluding iPhone 16e; begin in English; and are not initially available in the EU. Siri AI beta and broader language support also have language and regional constraints. Check Apple’s current feature availability for your location and devices before buying for these functions.

How much does Apple Watch Series 12 cost?
Apple lists a U.S. starting price of $399. It is a “from” price, not the price of every size, case material, or GPS + Cellular configuration. Apple announced availability across the U.S., UK, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the UAE, and more than 50 other countries and regions; local prices and availability vary.
For regional context, T3 reported the following aluminum starting prices at review time. These are secondary-source price reports, not a full Apple price table; retailer, tax, date, and configuration can change what you pay.
| Aluminum size | UK | U.S. | Euro price | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 42mm | £369 | $399 | €449 | A$649 |
| 46mm | £419 | $449 | €499 | A$739 |
Apple also describes an eligible U.S. Apple Upgrade option: a lease through Klarna with 12- or 24-month terms and payments starting at $11.99 per month for 24 months. This is a lease, not an outright purchase or loan; approval, eligibility, trade-ins, and obligations at lease end apply. It should not be confused with the $399 purchase starting price.

| Case size | Apple-listed wrist fit | Display area |
|---|---|---|
| 42mm | 130–200mm | 970 sq mm |
| 46mm | 140–245mm | 1,196 sq mm |
The 46mm model has the larger display, while the 42mm model is the smaller option. The stated wrist ranges overlap, so they are a useful fit check rather than a guarantee of comfort; try the size on if possible, especially if you are between sizes.
Which case material and finish should you choose?
Apple lists aluminum, titanium, and ceramic cases. The material changes weight and front-glass construction. Apple says aluminum uses Ceramic Shield 2, while titanium and ceramic have a sapphire front crystal.
| Case size | Aluminum GPS | Titanium | Pearl White ceramic | Night Blue ceramic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 42mm | 32.2g | 36.5g | 41.7g | 42.8g |
| 46mm | 39.5g | 44.9g | 51.3g | 52.9g |
These are Apple-listed weights. Aluminum is the lightest listed option; ceramic is the heaviest. Apple’s U.S. starting price does not establish what titanium or ceramic configurations cost, so compare the live price for the exact combination you want.
GPS or GPS + Cellular?
Choose GPS + Cellular if you want the watch to connect through a cellular network when your iPhone is not with you. Apple says cellular service requires a wireless service plan, so check carrier compatibility and recurring plan costs before choosing it. If you normally carry your iPhone or do not need independent connectivity, GPS avoids that added service requirement.

It’s perfect for trail runners—with up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode.* Track a workout with full GPS and heart rate monitoring for up to 20 hours in Low Power Mode.*
How long does the battery last, and how fast does it charge?
Apple estimates up to 24 hours of normal use, up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, and up to 10 hours of outdoor workout use. Apple describes the outdoor workout figure as 25 percent more than the previous model. For charging, Apple says 15 minutes can provide up to 12 hours of normal use, about 30 minutes can reach up to 80 percent, and a five-minute charge can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking.
These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees. Apple says its battery and charging tests used preproduction devices and prerelease software in July and August 2026, under specified conditions that included notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, Bluetooth or cellular use, and a 20W adapter for charging tests. Actual results vary with configuration, network and signal, settings, use, and environment. Plan around an everyday watch with a stated up-to-24-hour normal-use estimate, rather than a multi-day battery.
What iPhone and software do you need?
Series 12 requires an iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27 or later. Some Apple Intelligence features require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later (excluding iPhone 16e), and availability can also depend on language, region, and rollout. Apple says technical features may vary by region, language, and software.

Which Apple Watch Series 12 should you buy?
- Choose 42mm if its fit range suits your wrist and you prefer the smaller display and case.
- Choose 46mm if you prefer the larger display and its listed wrist-fit range works for you.
- Choose aluminum if low listed weight is a priority; choose titanium or ceramic for their different materials and sapphire front crystal.
- Choose GPS + Cellular only if independent connectivity is useful enough to justify checking carrier support and a service plan.
- Check the iPhone requirement before ordering, particularly if you want Apple Intelligence features with stricter device or regional requirements.
- Compare the exact configuration’s live price. Size, material, and cellular connectivity can change the cost beyond Apple’s U.S. starting price.
Apple says Series 12 contains 40 percent recycled material overall, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the aluminum case and 100 percent recycled titanium in the 3D-printed titanium case. Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing, Kaiann Drance, called it “the most advanced health and fitness companion we’ve ever created”—Apple’s launch description rather than an independent assessment.
