Choose Apple Watch Series 12 if its brighter wide-angle display and additional health features—such as ECG and hypertension notifications—are worth the higher price to you. Apple’s US launch prices were $399 for Series 12 in 2026 and $249 for SE 3 in 2025; those are launch prices, not guaranteed current prices.

Which watch is the better buy for you?
Choose Series 12 for the display and added health features
Series 12 is the more capable choice if you will make use of its brighter, wide-angle display or its additional listed health features. Apple rates its display at up to 2000 nits, compared with up to 1000 nits for SE 3. Apple also lists ECG and hypertension notifications for Series 12, features not listed for SE 3 on Apple’s comparison page.

That difference matters most when a specific feature is important to you. A feature being present does not make a watch a substitute for medical advice or care, and Apple notes that feature availability can vary by region and language. Apple describes Series 12’s higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV sensing as product capabilities; its accuracy claims should be understood as Apple’s own claims, not independent validation.

Choose SE 3 to spend less and keep the essentials
SE 3 starts $150 below Series 12 based on Apple’s US launch prices. It still has an Always-On display and includes fitness, safety, and health capabilities, along with gestures, on-device Siri, fast charging, and 5G cellular. It is the sensible pick if those features meet your needs and you do not value Series 12’s brighter display or additional listed health functions enough to pay more.
What the price difference does—and does not—tell you
Apple announced a US starting price of $399 for Series 12 on September 9, 2026, and a US starting price of $249 for SE 3 on September 9, 2025. The $150 gap compares those launch starting prices, not necessarily what the watches cost today. Size, connectivity, configuration, retailer, and current availability can change the price you see. Battery life: the available figures do not establish a winner
Apple gives SE 3 a battery estimate of up to 18 hours and specifies charging figures: 15 minutes can add up to eight hours of daily-use battery, while a charge to about 80% takes 45 minutes. The cited Series 12 announcement does not provide a directly comparable battery-hours figure. Without matching official estimates and test conditions for both watches, there is no sound basis here to declare a battery-life winner. Consult Apple’s current technical specifications for both models before treating battery life as a deciding factor.

Check compatibility and feature availability before buying
- Confirm your iPhone and software: Apple says Series 12 requires iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later. For SE 3, check Apple’s current compatibility information for the phone and software you use.
- Check your country and language: Apple says some features may not be available in all regions or languages. Verify that the specific feature you want is supported where you live.
- Compare like-for-like configurations: Match case size and GPS or cellular connectivity when checking prices; a launch starting price is not a quote for every configuration.
- Buy for the features you will use: If the display and added health features do not change your decision, SE 3’s lower launch starting price makes it the stronger value choice on the facts listed here.
