iFixit’s teardown found a modest battery-repair improvement in Apple Watch Series 12, but not in Apple Watch Ultra 4. Series 12 has a stretch-release battery adhesive tab and a simpler display connector; both watches still require opening the glued display to reach the battery, so the most delicate part of a battery replacement remains.

These are teardown findings and scores from iFixit’s repairability scale, not an Apple rating or a standardized regulatory assessment. The measurements and comparisons were reported by iFixit on October 6, 2026.
Did Apple Watch Series 12 get a battery pull tab?
Yes. After opening the display and removing the battery connector bracket, iFixit found a stretch-release adhesive tab that lets the battery be pulled free instead of pried out with a spudger. That makes the battery-removal step less dependent on levering against the battery, but it does not make the whole repair easy: the glued display still has to come off first.

Series 12 also changes the display connector. iFixit found a press connector beneath a bracket rather than the previous ZIF connector and tape. That simplifies the connector arrangement, but creates a trade-off for screen repairs: iFixit says the battery must also be removed and replaced when changing the display.

Is Apple Watch Ultra 4 easier to repair?
Not in the ways reported in this teardown. iFixit gave Ultra 4 a 4/10 repairability score, the same score it assigned to the previous three Ultra generations. Its battery is reached by opening the display, not by removing the four pentalobe screws on the back. According to iFixit, those screws provide access to the sensor assembly, and removing them compromises waterproofing.
To open Ultra 4, iFixit heated the display for about ten minutes and used a thin metal pick with depth markings to cut through the perimeter adhesive. It warns that delicate cables sit close to the seam and can be sliced during opening. The teardown’s opening procedure illustrates why the battery pull tab in Series 12 is only an incremental improvement: reaching the battery still begins with a risky display-opening operation.

Are the new batteries meaningfully larger?
iFixit’s measured capacities are higher than those of the compared previous models: Series 12 is 1.461 Wh versus 1.403 Wh in the 46 mm Series 11, while Ultra 4 is 2.444 Wh versus 2.313 Wh in Ultra 3. These are battery-capacity measurements, not runtime results. Watt-hours alone do not establish how long a watch lasts in everyday use.

Apple’s advertised runtime figures come from separate tests, not a direct conversion of those capacity measurements. Apple describes a 50-hour multiday battery-life test for Ultra 4 and a separate 24-hour all-day test for Series 12. The protocols use preproduction products, and Apple says results vary with use, configuration, network, and other conditions. What does a battery repair cost?
iFixit reported Apple’s estimate of $99 for battery service on a Series 12 GPS + Cellular model and $599 for other service for that configuration. Those figures apply to the specified configuration and were reported by iFixit; check Apple’s current Apple Watch service and repair page for applicable prices and service details, which can change.

As a limited point of reference, iFixit cited a 9/10 repairability score for Pixel Watch 5 and noted its display access uses two Torx screws and a gasket. That is iFixit’s comparison, not a like-for-like product test or an independent consensus on smartwatch repairability.
