A standalone fingertip pulse oximeter is generally the more direct choice for a spot check, but neither it nor Apple Watch Blood Oxygen can diagnose a medical condition. The Apple Watch feature estimates blood oxygen intermittently for general fitness and wellness; fingertip devices typically display oxygen saturation and pulse rate during a user-initiated check. Readings from either can be affected by how and when you measure, and a number should be considered alongside symptoms.
What the two devices measure—and how their readings differ
Both devices estimate blood oxygen saturation, usually shown as SpO₂. A fingertip pulse oximeter also typically displays pulse rate. Neither takes a blood sample: each estimates these values using light and sensors, and the result can be affected by measurement conditions.
| Dimension | Apple Watch Blood Oxygen | Standalone fingertip pulse oximeter |
|---|---|---|
| What it reports | Estimated blood oxygen level (SpO₂); readings can be reviewed in the iPhone Health app. | Typically estimated oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and pulse rate, displayed on the device. |
| When it measures | On demand, plus occasional background readings when you are not moving. Background frequency varies with activity; an on-demand measurement takes 15 seconds. | Usually a spot check initiated by placing the device on a finger and waiting for a stable display, following the device instructions. |
| Intended role | General fitness and wellness, not medical use, self-diagnosis, or consultation with a doctor. | Depends on the model. Some over-the-counter models intended for medical purposes have FDA clearance; general-wellness models are not evaluated for clinical decision-making. |
| Setup | Requires a supported watch, availability in your country or region, a snug fit, and a still wrist. Certain U.S. models also require an eligible paired iPhone and software for analysis and viewing. | Requires the device and suitable conditions, including a warm, relaxed hand and a still finger. Follow the manufacturer’s directions. |
Apple explicitly cautions that its readings are for wellness: “Measurements taken with the Blood Oxygen app are not intended for medical use and are only designed for general fitness and wellness purposes.” Apple’s support page explains the feature and its limitations.

Not for every purpose. The watch is useful for occasional wellness tracking when the feature is supported and a reading succeeds. A fingertip oximeter is designed for a focused spot check and ordinarily shows pulse rate as well as SpO₂. But the label “pulse oximeter” does not by itself establish medical suitability: intended use and regulatory status vary by model.

The FDA says only a small number of over-the-counter devices intended for medical purposes have FDA clearance. General-wellness pulse oximeters are not reviewed or evaluated for clinical decision-making. Check the specific model’s labeling and intended use rather than assuming an online listing is cleared or appropriate for medical monitoring. See the FDA’s consumer information on pulse oximeters.
Check whether Blood Oxygen is available on your Apple Watch
Apple’s support information says the feature is available on Apple Watch Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models, subject to country and region availability; Apple Watch SE is not supported. Availability in the United States also depends on the individual watch’s purchase history and part number, so the model name alone may not tell you which version you have.

For U.S. watches purchased on or after January 18, 2024, Apple specifies watches with part numbers ending in LW/A or LS/A. On those watches, analysis runs on the paired iPhone and results appear in Health. Apple’s August 14, 2025 announcement described a redesigned feature for some U.S. Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 users after updates to iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. Apple said that change did not affect previously purchased units that had the original feature or units purchased outside the U.S. Check Apple’s current model, part-number, and software guidance for your specific device rather than applying one rule to every U.S. watch.

How to get a more useful reading
On Apple Watch
- Confirm that Blood Oxygen is supported for your watch and region, and that the feature is set up. For the specified U.S. models, use the required paired iPhone and current compatible software.
- Wear the watch snugly. Sit still, rest your wrist flat, and keep your arm steady while the measurement runs.
- Allow the full 15 seconds for an on-demand reading. Background measurements are occasional and their timing varies, so they are not a dependable schedule of spot checks.
- If a reading fails or looks unexpected, correct your position and fit and try again when your hand and wrist are warm and still. A failed measurement does not by itself indicate a health problem.
With a fingertip pulse oximeter
- Follow the instructions for your specific device and any directions from your health-care provider.
- Warm and relax your hand, keep it still, and remove nail polish from the finger used for the measurement, as advised by the FDA.
- Wait for a stable value rather than treating a changing display as a settled result.
- If tracking readings over time, record the value and the time it was taken so the readings have useful context.
Why readings can fail or differ
Neither device produces a guaranteed value under all conditions. Apple identifies motion, low skin perfusion (including from cold), some tattoos that block light, a poor fit, and certain arm or hand positions as factors that can interfere with watch readings. Apple also says a resting heart rate above 150 beats per minute can prevent a successful measurement. Even under ideal conditions, a reading may fail.

The FDA lists poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, current tobacco use, and fingernail polish among factors that may affect pulse-oximeter accuracy. These factors mean a result is an estimate, not an exact measurement. A watch and a fingertip device may not agree; a difference alone does not establish which one is correct.
A 2025 systematic review summary reported Apple Watch SpO₂ validation studies involving Series 6 through Series 8, with seven included studies reporting mean differences under 1% SpO₂. The summary also noted that performance varies with conditions and individual physiology. Those findings do not establish a universal accuracy ranking between Apple Watch and standalone fingertip devices.

How to interpret an SpO₂ number
The FDA says 95% to 100% is typical for oxygen saturation in most healthy individuals. It also notes that levels can be lower for people with lung or heart problems and at higher altitudes. Apple similarly says most people have readings of 95% to 100%, while some people may normally be below 95% and sleeping values may be slightly lower. These are general reference points, not an individual diagnosis or a universal threshold for action.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConsider how you feel as well as the reading. The FDA advises: “Do not rely only on a pulse oximeter.” Contact a health-care provider if you are concerned or symptoms worsen; seek urgent medical help for serious symptoms. Only a health-care provider can diagnose conditions such as hypoxia. A seemingly reassuring number should not override concerning symptoms.
Quick Recap
Which one should you use?
- For wellness trends: Apple Watch Blood Oxygen can provide occasional readings if your watch and region support it, but background measurements are intermittent and the feature is not for medical decisions.
- For a spot check: A fingertip pulse oximeter is purpose-built for a user-initiated measurement and typically displays pulse rate too. Choose based on the device’s stated intended use, and do not assume a general-wellness model is suitable for clinical monitoring.
- For a health concern: Neither device can diagnose the cause of a low or unexpected value. Take symptoms seriously and ask a health-care professional for advice rather than relying on a device reading alone.
