Apple Watch’s Maximum Capacity is an estimate of how much charge its battery can hold compared with when it was new—not how full the battery is right now. Use it alongside your watch’s real-world runtime and any service alert to decide what to do. Apple’s below-80% battery-service threshold applies to eligible AppleCare coverage; it is not a universal replacement deadline.
What does Apple Watch battery health percentage mean?
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s estimated capacity with its capacity when new. It is separate from the live charge level shown on the watch face or in Control Center. For example, a watch can be charged to 100% while Maximum Capacity is below 100%: the charge is full relative to the battery’s current capacity.
Apple describes rechargeable batteries as consumable components. As a lithium-ion battery chemically ages, it can hold less charge, which may reduce both time between charges and peak performance. Chemical aging is influenced by factors including temperature history and charging patterns; there is no single schedule that predicts when every watch will reach a particular percentage.

How to check Maximum Capacity
- On your Apple Watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- Read the figure beside Maximum Capacity.
Apple defines Maximum Capacity as “a measure of your battery capacity relative to when it was new.” See Apple’s guidance on Apple Watch battery drain.

Can the reported percentage change after an update?
For certain models and software versions, Apple says the watch recalibrates its battery-capacity estimate after an update. A revised figure may therefore reflect a more accurate estimate; it does not by itself prove that the battery suddenly degraded. These notes apply only to the listed combinations, not every Apple Watch:
- Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5: watchOS 9.0 or later.
- Apple Watch Series 6 (44 mm): watchOS 9.4 or later.
- Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation): watchOS 26 or later.
- Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra: watchOS 26.6 or later.
Check your model and installed watchOS before interpreting a change as recalibration. Apple lists these model-specific details in its Apple Watch Battery and Performance guidance.

When should you replace an Apple Watch battery?
There is no universal percentage at which every owner must replace a battery. Consider how long the watch lasts against your own routine, whether it shows a service alert, and what service your coverage and location allow.

A lower Maximum Capacity figure alone is not an emergency.
- Runtime no longer meets your needs: Consider recent software-update timing and battery settings, then contact Apple Support to discuss service choices.
- The watch says “Battery Needs Service,” or you believe replacement is needed: Contact Apple Support. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance directs owners with this alert or a replacement concern to support.
- You have AppleCare coverage: Check whether the plan applies and review the service terms for your location.
Apple’s Apple Watch repair page says, “We’ll replace the battery for no extra charge if the capacity drops below 80%.” This is an AppleCare service threshold, not a mandatory replacement point for all watches and not a statement of terms for owners without applicable coverage. Service options can vary by location and parts availability. Check your coverage and current choices through Apple Service and Repair for Apple Watch or Apple Support.

What to do if battery life suddenly gets worse
If runtime drops just after a watchOS update, Apple says update-related tasks may continue in the background and affect battery life. Its guidance is to wait a few days and check again before reassessing. If the problem continues or the watch displays a service message, contact Apple Support.

Use the included Apple Watch magnetic charger, as Apple recommends. Optimized Battery Charging learns your charging habits and, in certain situations, delays charging past 80% to reduce the time the battery spends fully charged. Supported models may also offer Optimized Charge Limit. Apple says this feature requires watchOS 10 or later and is available on Apple Watch SE and later, Series 6 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later; the exact option varies by model and software.

A temporary charge level around 75–80% under an optimized charging feature is not the Maximum Capacity reading and does not mean the battery has degraded to that level. These charging features are intended to reduce wear; they do not restore capacity already lost through chemical aging.
