Apple has not published a Vision Pro unit-sales total. The figure behind the under-100,000 headline is a third-party estimate of 45,000 shipments in the fourth quarter of 2025—not a count of all Vision Pro units sold. A separate estimate puts 2024 shipments at about 390,000, so the available figures do not support a claim that lifetime sales were below 100,000.
What the reported numbers measure
Shipments and sales are not interchangeable. The available figures are IDC estimates of units shipped during specified periods; they are not Apple’s confirmed counts of purchases by end customers. Apple has not disclosed a Vision Pro unit-sales figure in the sources reviewed.
| Period | Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar 2024 | About 390,000 shipments, an IDC estimate attributed to the Financial Times by Axis Intelligence Research in its September 30, 2026 compilation | A calendar-year estimate, not an Apple-reported sales count |
| Q4 2025 | 45,000 shipments, an IDC estimate reported by The Guardian on January 1, 2026 | A three-month estimate, not a lifetime total |
| Q1–Q3 2025 | Not stated; Axis Intelligence Research says public estimates for these quarters were unavailable in its September 30, 2026 compilation | The missing quarters prevent a supported full-year 2025 total |
| Lifetime | Not stated; Apple has not published a unit count in the sources reviewed | No verified cumulative sales or shipment total is established |
The 2024 and Q4 2025 figures are separate period estimates. They should not be added together and presented as a lifetime total, nor does the Q4 figure establish that fewer than 100,000 units had ever been sold.
Why the headset may have struggled to reach buyers
The Guardian reported that analysts pointed to the price, the headset’s form factor, and a limited native visionOS app catalog as explanations for limited uptake. Those are analysts’ attributed explanations, not independently established causes of the shipment estimate. The same Guardian report described production cuts as reported and noted that Apple had not commented or released unit-sales figures.

Price and intended buyer
Apple announced the M5 Vision Pro on October 15, 2025, with a U.S. starting price of $3,499. That price positions it as a high-cost device rather than an entry-level headset, but the available evidence does not quantify how much price affected demand.
Form factor
Analysts cited the headset’s form factor as another possible obstacle. The cited reporting does not provide a measured comfort comparison or isolate form factor’s effect on sales, so it is best understood as a proposed explanation rather than a proven cause.

Native spatial apps versus the wider catalog
Apple said in its October 2025 announcement that more than 3,000 apps had been built for visionOS, while over 1 million apps were available overall. These are different categories: the larger figure describes the broader available app catalog, not the number of apps built specifically for spatial computing. Neither figure measures how many people bought or actively used the headset.
What changed with the M5 model
Apple announced the M5 Vision Pro on October 15, 2025. Its U.S. starting price was $3,499, with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage configurations. Apple said the model rendered 10 percent more pixels than the previous generation and supported refresh rates up to 120Hz. Those are product specifications, not evidence that demand improved.

Apple also made claims about longer battery life in its announcement; those statements were based on Apple’s own tests. The available shipment estimates do not establish whether the M5 model changed sales or shipments.

- Supported: IDC estimated 45,000 Vision Pro shipments in Q4 2025, according to The Guardian’s January 1, 2026 report.
- Not supported: that fewer than 100,000 Vision Pro units have sold over the product’s lifetime.
- Also reported: a separate estimate attributes about 390,000 shipments to calendar 2024.
- Still unknown from these sources: Apple’s cumulative unit-sales count and a complete public set of 2025 quarterly estimates.
So the headline can describe a low quarterly shipment estimate only if its period and metric are made clear. It should not be read as a verified lifetime sales figure.
