Apple Vision Pro is a wearable headset that runs visionOS and places apps and digital content in the space around you. You interact with that content using your eyes, hands and voice. Apple calls it a “spatial computer”; that is the company’s product framing, not a standardized device category.
What Apple Vision Pro is
Apple Vision Pro is the hardware: a headset designed to blend digital content with a view of the physical surroundings. Its operating system, visionOS, provides the interface and platform for apps and games. The two terms are related but not interchangeable: Vision Pro is the device, while visionOS is the software running on it. Apple describes the product as a spatial computer, and its developer documentation presents visionOS as a platform for spatial apps and games.
How you interact with it
Apple describes eyes, hands and voice as the primary ways to navigate Vision Pro. Rather than relying only on a conventional screen, its interface can place apps in the user’s surroundings, where they can be moved or resized. Apple’s product guide also describes immersive Environments, FaceTime, media viewing, games and a Mac Virtual Display. These are Apple-described features; their availability and experience can depend on software, region and setup.

- Apps and productivity: Arrange app windows in the surrounding space and, as Apple describes, use a Mac Virtual Display.
- Communication: Use features such as FaceTime.
- Entertainment: View media, play games and use immersive Environments.
- Spatial content: View spatial photos and video.

Vision Pro specifications depend on the generation
Apple’s published specifications differ between the original model introduced in 2024 and the M5-generation model. The battery figures below are Apple estimates for general use, not independent test results.

The specifications come from Apple’s technical details for the original model and its current technical specifications. Check the model-specific page when evaluating a particular headset; a specification for one generation should not be assumed to apply to another.

What the R1 chip does
In its 2023 announcement, Apple said the R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones, then streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds. These are Apple’s design specifications, not an independent measurement of perceived responsiveness in every situation. Apple’s announcement also described the device as introducing “spatial computing.”
Accessories and compatibility
Apple says people who need vision correction use ZEISS Optical Inserts. Accessory compatibility is model-specific, so confirm the headset generation and the relevant Apple specifications before buying inserts or other accessories. Apple’s technical specifications also identify supported AirPods models; compatibility should likewise be checked against the exact headset and accessory.

What the term “spatial computer” means
“Spatial computer” is Apple’s label for a headset that combines a spatial interface with the physical environment. It helps explain how Apple positions the device, but it is not a formal industry standard that, by itself, establishes how Vision Pro compares with other headsets or computers. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in the June 5, 2023 announcement, “Apple Vision Pro introduces you to spatial computing.”
