What is the 2015 Syfy series about?
Six strangers wake without their memories
The series opens with six people emerging from stasis aboard a starship already in flight. They do not know their names or histories, though they retain their abilities. They identify themselves by numbers—One, Two, Three, and so on—as they investigate who they were.

The crew learns that nearly all of them had been wanted criminals. Their central choice is whether to try to build new lives and make amends or return to the people they used to be. That identity mystery and the characters’ competing paths give the older series a clear engine for its serialized story.

Its comic-book connection belongs to this series
The first two episodes adapted a 2012 Dark Matter comic published by Dark Horse Comics. That source-material link applies to the Syfy series only; it does not establish a connection to Apple TV’s show.
What makes the older show a different kind of sci-fi story?
The September 2026 article characterizes Syfy’s Dark Matter as a harder-edged space-outlaw story driven by its central mystery, and says a multiverse development beginning in season two made the plotting more complex. Those are critical judgments, not objective measures of quality or a consensus verdict.
