Apple TV released the trailer for Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook on October 1, 2026. The eight-episode culinary docuseries premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, November 6, 2026, following Nora Lum—known professionally as Awkwafina—as she develops her cooking skills and explores her family’s restaurant legacy.
What the series is about
The series follows Lum on a cross-country culinary journey as she tries to learn to cook and considers how to carry forward her family’s Chinese restaurant legacy. Apple describes the family restaurant, Lum’s, as an iconic Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. Lum sums up her starting point in Apple’s announcement: “I can’t cook. Like, at all.”
Along the way, the show features a crash course at the Culinary Institute of America, Texas barbecue with Jimmy O. Yang, and lessons from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan. It also explores the tiki culture that inspired Lum’s grandmother’s restaurant in Hawai‘i and follows Lum as she takes on a serving challenge at a restaurant in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. The story builds toward an opening night, with her grandmother among the diners.
