Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is a plausible upgrade from Google TV Streamer (4K) if you want Apple’s ecosystem, its stated privacy protections and the performance Apple claims for its new A19 chip. The trade-off is clear: Apple announced a U.S. price of $299, nearly twice Google’s listed $149.99. Apple announced the device on October 13, 2026, with preorders beginning that day and store availability scheduled for November 13. Those prices and dates are specific to the U.S. and may change.
What changed with the new Apple TV 4K?
Apple announced Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on October 13, 2026. The company says the device uses an A19 chip and delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous generation. Apple also says it includes a dedicated AV1 decoder. These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified benchmark results. Apple’s announcement sets the launch and performance claims.
Google says the processor in Google TV Streamer (4K) is 22 percent faster, but the surfaced product information does not identify the comparison baseline. That figure cannot be compared directly with Apple’s percentages. Neither claim alone establishes which device feels faster in a particular app or household.
Apple’s currently surfaced general specifications page describes an earlier A15 Bionic Apple TV 4K model. Its specifications should not be treated as confirmed details for the fourth generation. The new-model announcement does not establish every detail readers may want, including a complete video-format and connectivity specification table.

How much do the devices cost?

The announced Apple price is $149.01 above Google’s listed price—just under twice as much. Budget for an HDMI cable as well: Apple’s surfaced specifications say one is sold separately, and Google says a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately. Do not assume the older Apple model’s cable specification applies to the fourth generation. Google’s price and device details are on its U.S. Google Store listing.
What do you get with Google TV Streamer?
Google lists support for 4K HDR video at up to 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, plus Dolby Atmos audio. Its listed hardware includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Ethernet at 10/100/1000 Mbps, 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory. For smart-home use, Google lists Matter support and a Thread border router. These are concrete capabilities to compare against your TV, sound system, network and existing smart-home devices.

Apple’s announcement highlights the A19 chip, AV1 decoding and privacy and Siri features, but it does not provide a complete fourth-generation format table in the available announcement information. Check Apple’s current product details before buying if a particular HDR format, audio format, port or network feature is essential. The earlier A15 model’s page lists Wi-Fi 6 and HDMI 2.1, but those are not sufficient evidence to assign those specifications to the new model. Apple’s specifications page currently surfaced the earlier-generation reference.
Is Apple TV 4K more private than Google TV?
Apple describes several privacy protections for the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. It says Secure Exclaves isolate certain data and states: “Data that is processed and analyzed in the Secure Exclaves cannot be accessed by tvOS, apps, the user, or Apple.” That is Apple’s description of its architecture, not an independent audit. Apple also says Siri AI requests can be processed on-device or through Private Cloud Compute, and that HomeKit Secure Video footage is end-to-end encrypted and inaccessible to Apple. Apple’s October 13 announcement describes these protections.

Apple TV also has configurable privacy controls. Apple Support documents settings for app tracking requests and access to location, photos, Bluetooth, microphone, camera, Apple Home and media activity, as well as choices about analytics and “Improve Siri & Dictation.” If you enable “Improve Siri & Dictation,” Apple says it may store and review audio of Siri and dictation interactions from the device. The options and their implications are described in Apple’s Apple TV privacy settings guide.
Privacy does not mean that Apple TV sends no information to Apple. Apple’s tvOS 26 software license says: “If you do not want your search queries and related usage data (including subscriber status) sent to Apple, you should not use the Apple TV Search feature.” The tvOS 26 license makes that qualification explicit.

The available Google product information establishes hardware, format and smart-home features, but not enough detail for a like-for-like comparison of its privacy settings and data handling against Apple’s. That evidence does not support declaring Apple objectively more private. The practical choice is to weigh Apple’s stated protections and user controls alongside its Search disclosure, and to review the settings and data practices for the platform you choose.

Which device makes sense for your setup?
Choose Apple TV 4K if
- You want Apple’s TV platform and its ecosystem integrations, including Apple’s stated use of Apple TV as a home hub and support for HomeKit Secure Video.
- You value the privacy architecture and controls Apple describes, and are comfortable with the Search and optional audio-sharing disclosures.
- You are willing to pay the announced $299 U.S. price for the new model and its claimed performance improvements.
Choose Google TV Streamer if
- You want a lower listed U.S. price: $149.99 at the Google Store when checked for this comparison.
- You need a listed capability such as Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, Ethernet, 32 GB storage, Matter or a Thread border router.
- You already prefer Google TV or rely on its smart-home features, and the Apple ecosystem is not worth the additional cost to you.
Check before replacing your current device
- Confirm your television and audio equipment support the formats you plan to use; a streaming box cannot add a display or sound format your other equipment lacks.
- Check current fourth-generation Apple specifications for any must-have port, wireless standard or format, since older-generation specifications are not confirmation.
- Include a separately sold HDMI cable in your setup budget. Google specifies certified HDMI 2.1; Apple’s surfaced information only confirms that a cable is sold separately for Apple TV.
- Consider smart-home compatibility, network needs and platform preferences along with processor claims. Performance figures from the companies do not substitute for an independent, same-condition comparison.
Can you replace Google TV with Apple TV 4K?
Yes, if the apps and services you use are available on Apple TV and your television and accessories work with it. The product comparison alone cannot guarantee that every app, account feature or smart-home routine will carry over; check the specific services and devices you depend on before switching. For households that value Apple’s ecosystem and stated privacy controls, the higher price may be justified. For those satisfied with Google TV Streamer’s listed formats and smart-home support, Google’s substantially lower listed price may be the better fit.
