Apple may be developing a way to use four HomePods with Apple TV 4K in a front-and-rear surround layout, but it is still a rumor based on beta-software clues. Apple has not announced the feature, and the latest reports do not establish that a finished surround system is available. Apple’s documented setup remains one HomePod or a stereo pair.

What the four-HomePod rumor describes

Reports point to a proposed arrangement with two HomePods at the front of the room and two at the rear. MacRumors said references in audioOS 27 beta code included room calibration, speaker-position mapping, timing adjustments, bass management, EQ, dialogue enhancement, and movie and music processing modes. Those references suggest work on a more elaborate home-theater setup, but code clues do not confirm a released feature or its final behavior.

In an October 6 report, MacRumors said Apple had tested four second-generation HomePods. It also described an alternative test configuration with two second-generation HomePods at the front and two unreleased, unidentified speakers at the rear. The report does not establish which models, if any, Apple will ultimately support.

Why four selectable speakers do not prove surround sound works

A September 23 report about a tvOS beta initially suggested that four HomePods could be used with Apple TV 4K. The report was later qualified: leaker pdfu clarified that the selection appeared in tvOS 27.0 and did not mean the system had working surround sound. FlatpanelsHD’s observation, relayed by 9to5Mac, found four speakers listed as output, but users could not assign speaker roles. The same audio reportedly played at the front and rear, with further limitations affecting menu and game audio.

That distinction matters: seeing four devices in an output selector is not the same as Apple TV sending distinct audio channels to correctly assigned front and rear speakers. The September report should be read as evidence of an incomplete interface or feature path, not proof that a four-speaker system is ready to use.

What Apple TV 4K supports today

Apple’s current HomePod setup guide describes using one HomePod or a stereo pair with Apple TV 4K. It covers Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital 7.1 or 5.1 surround formats for video; HomePod mini renders those formats in mono or stereo. The guide does not document a four-HomePod surround system.

Will it work with your Apple TV or HomePods?

That is not known. The October 6 MacRumors report says compatibility with existing Apple TV 4K models is unclear and does not establish whether new HomePod hardware will be required. The reporting also does not confirm HomePod mini support as a rear speaker. Do not buy extra speakers or upgrade an Apple TV on the assumption that this rumored configuration will arrive or work with your current equipment.

How to set up Apple’s documented HomePod audio option

For the currently supported single-speaker or stereo-pair setup, Apple’s guide calls for the latest tvOS on Apple TV 4K and an iPhone on iOS 27 or later or iPad on iPadOS 27 or later. The Apple TV and HomePod need to be assigned to the same room in the Home app.

  1. Update Apple TV 4K to the latest tvOS and update the iPhone or iPad you use to iOS 27 or later or iPadOS 27 or later.
  2. In the Home app, make sure Apple TV 4K and HomePod are assigned to the same room.
  3. Open the Home app’s Apple TV settings, choose Default Audio Output, then select the HomePod or stereo pair.

This routes all Apple TV sound, including navigation clicks, to HomePod. Apple’s placement advice for this documented setup is to keep HomePod within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall and near the TV’s center. For a stereo pair, place one speaker on each side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart. Apple has not published placement instructions for the rumored four-speaker arrangement.
