Apple TV 4K is worth considering if you want a dedicated, consistent streaming interface, high-end HDR and audio-format support, Apple-device integration, or an Apple smart-home hub. It is harder to justify if your TV’s built-in apps already work well, you mainly need basic streaming, or the reported $199 price is too high. The right choice depends on the television and sound system you own, how much you use Apple services, and whether you need Ethernet or extra storage.

1. It supports premium 4K HDR formats
Apple documents 4K HDR output, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ support. You will need a compatible television to benefit from those formats, and Apple says a compatible HDMI cable is required for 4K HDR output. Apple’s technical specifications list the supported formats and connection requirements.
2. It supports home-theater audio
Apple lists Dolby Atmos and multichannel audio support. That can matter if you have a compatible soundbar or AV receiver and want your streaming box to work with your existing audio setup. The equipment and the content also need to support the formats you want to use. Apple’s specifications describe the box’s audio support.
3. It gives you a dedicated streaming interface
A separate box provides a common interface across televisions, rather than relying on each TV maker’s built-in apps, processor, and software-update schedule. That can be useful when a television’s apps feel slow or stop receiving updates. This is a practical advantage of using dedicated hardware, not a claim based on a published speed benchmark.

4. The included remote fits into Apple’s device ecosystem
The Siri Remote is included, uses USB-C, and can be located with an iPhone, according to Apple’s store listing. That is convenient for households already using Apple devices. Apple’s store listing describes the included remote.
5. It can serve as an Apple smart-home hub
Apple says, “Apple TV 4K also works as a smart home hub, letting you connect and control all your favorite smart home accessories.” If you use compatible Apple smart-home accessories, that hub role can make the streaming box useful beyond watching TV. 6. Multiview can show multiple live sports events
Apple’s support documentation describes Multiview for watching up to four live sports events at once in supported Apple TV app services. 7. Recent models remain supported by tvOS 27
September 2026 coverage reports that tvOS 27 supports second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K models. Ongoing support can extend the useful life of a streaming box, though a support listing does not guarantee how long a future model will receive updates. 8. You can choose between Wi-Fi value and Ethernet plus storage

3 reasons to skip Apple TV 4K
1. The reported price is high for basic streaming
Tom’s Guide reported a $199 price for the current model in June 2026. That is a meaningful premium if you only need access to common streaming apps or your television already runs them well. Compare the live price in your region with less expensive streaming devices and the features built into your TV before buying; the $199 figure is reported pricing, not a guarantee of today’s local price. 2. The box does not replace streaming subscriptions
Buying Apple TV 4K does not include subscriptions to third-party services or content available to rent or purchase. Apple’s own TV subscription also does not bundle those third-party subscriptions. The cited Apple store and specification material covers the third-generation Apple TV 4K, released in 2022. Reports or rumors about a successor are not an official Apple announcement. If buying older hardware at a near-full price concerns you, waiting or buying only at a discount may be preferable. Who should skip it?
Skip Apple TV 4K if your television’s built-in apps are responsive and current, you do not use Apple’s ecosystem, your display is only HD, or you want the least expensive way to stream. It is also a poor fit if you expect the purchase to cover subscriptions such as Netflix or Disney+; those services remain separate.
