Apple Stores reportedly received sealed boxes marked “Do Not Open Until October 8,” but the report does not confirm that they contain devices—or that Apple has announced a smart-home launch. MacRumors said the boxes are believed to hold visual merchandising materials for a store presentation update scheduled to begin October 8.
What are the “Do Not Open” boxes for?
In a report published October 1, 2026, MacRumors said Apple retail stores received confidential boxes earlier that week. The boxes bore the label “Do Not Open Until October 8.” MacRumors said it received a tip about them and independently verified that the boxes existed.
The report said the boxes are believed to contain visual merchandising materials—items used to update store labels, graphics, and product layouts. It did not establish the contents through an Apple statement or a described inspection. The store presentation changes were reported as scheduled to begin October 8.

Do the boxes confirm a smart-home product launch?
No. The boxes’ contents and any connection to new products remain unconfirmed. MacRumors said the materials might relate to iPhone Duo, but considered a link to rumored smart-home products more likely given the timing and confidentiality. That is an interpretation of the shipment, not confirmation from Apple.

The report does not establish that Apple confirmed the products or either date.

How this relates to the current HomePod mini
Apple’s existing HomePod mini is a separate, currently available product from the rumored HomePod mini 2. MacRumors’ product guide describes the current model as a smart speaker that can control HomeKit-compatible accessories and serve as a home hub. That context does not establish the rumored model’s features, price, release date, or availability.
