Apple Sports has two separate football-season updates: a football-focused refresh announced August 29, 2024, and a broader widgets and scheduled Live Activities update announced September 16, 2025. The first adds more detail during NFL and college-football games; the second makes scores and schedules easier to check from iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

The August 2024 football update
More useful play-by-play
Apple described enhanced play-by-play for NFL and college football, including quick access to scoring drives alongside the game’s individual plays. That makes it easier to review how points were produced without searching through the entire sequence.
A dynamic drive tracker
The update also introduced a visual tracker showing where the ball was on the field. It is designed to provide context at a glance while a drive is in progress, rather than presenting the game as a score-only feed.

My Teams is the more focused option for regular followers, while League is useful when you want a broad view of the football schedule.
Schedule Live Activities before kickoff
Users can schedule a Live Activity in advance for an upcoming event. This differs from discovering a game only after it has started: the activity can be prepared ahead of time so live updates are available when the event begins, subject to device and regional support.

Which feature should you use?
- Want a quick score or upcoming game time: use a widget.
- Following one or more favorite teams: choose the My Teams widget view.
- Checking an entire competition: choose the League view.
- Watching an active game remotely: use a Live Activity and the detailed play-by-play.
- Trying to understand a current drive: use the dynamic field-position tracker from the 2024 football update.
Availability and compatibility
The current US App Store listing describes Apple Sports as a free iPhone app and includes NFL and NCAA College Football. Apple’s 2025 announcement separately identifies widgets for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so the app and widget experience should not be assumed to be identical across devices.

Apple Support says Live Activities can be followed from a game and warns that Apple Sports availability and features may vary by country or region. Check the current app listing and system support for your location before relying on a specific feature. Store descriptions and availability can change.

What Apple Sports now covers during football season
The two announcements address different moments in following a season. Widgets handle glanceable scores and schedules, while Live Activities and the 2024 football tools provide more information during an active game. Apple summarized the 2025 expansion by saying, “These updates arrive just in time for football season, giving sports fans more ways than ever to follow their favorite teams.”
