An Apple Pencil that will not write, charge, or pair is not necessarily dead. Check that it works with your iPad, confirm its battery level, use the correct charging connection, and follow Apple’s pairing steps. If it still will not pair afterward, Apple recommends service—but that alone does not identify the battery as the failed part.
Identify your Apple Pencil and iPad first
Apple Pencil compatibility depends on the exact Pencil and iPad models. Check Apple’s compatibility list before troubleshooting further or buying a replacement. The list covers Apple Pencil (1st generation), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil Pro; a connector that looks right does not establish compatibility.
For example, Apple lists Apple Pencil (1st generation) for iPad mini (5th generation), iPad (6th through 10th generations) and iPad (A16), iPad Air (3rd generation), and specified earlier iPad Pro models. Apple Pencil (2nd generation) works with iPad mini (6th generation), iPad Air (4th and 5th generations), and specified iPad Pro models. Check whether the Pencil has battery charge
Look for the Pencil in the Batteries widget or open Settings > Apple Pencil. Apple documents both locations for checking battery level for Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C). If the battery is low, charge the Pencil using its model-appropriate connection before testing it again. A battery reading is useful evidence of charge level, not a definitive battery-health diagnosis.

Charge and pair it the way its model requires

Apple’s pairing, charging, and battery-level guidance explains the documented steps for Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C). For other models, use the connection Apple specifies for that Pencil and iPad combination.
Follow Apple’s pairing checks if it will not connect
- Update the iPad, then confirm that the iPad model supports your Pencil.
- Connect the Pencil using the correct method for its model and leave it connected.
- Restart the iPad while the Pencil remains connected.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on. If the Pencil appears under Settings > Bluetooth > My Devices, tap its information button, choose Forget This Device, then reconnect it.
- Tap Pair if the pairing prompt appears. If it does not, wait one minute while the Pencil charges, then connect it again.
- For Apple Pencil Pro or 2nd generation, remove the iPad case if pairing still fails; the case may interfere with the magnetic connection.
These are Apple’s checks in its Apple Pencil pairing troubleshooting guidance. A missing prompt or unsuccessful pairing after one attempt does not by itself prove the Pencil is dead.

When to seek service—and when replacement makes sense
If the Pencil still will not pair after the compatibility, connection, charging, Bluetooth, restart, and re-pairing checks, Apple says service may be needed. Its guidance states: “If the Pair button still doesn’t appear, you may need a service. Get a service.” That recommendation does not establish that the battery is the failed component.
Consider replacement only after checking compatibility and attempting the troubleshooting steps. If you have Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (10th generation), the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a compatible cable are the specific connection accessories Apple calls for; needing them does not mean the Pencil itself has failed. For an unresolved problem, service is the next step Apple identifies.
