In India, Samsung Pay documents both card payments and UPI-linked bank accounts; Apple Pay, launched in India on September 30, 2026, currently lists eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards and does not document UPI support. Which one works for you depends on your phone, exact card and issuer, and—if you need UPI—your payment method. A bank appearing on a list does not guarantee that every card it issues will enroll.

Both services depend on compatible hardware and eligible payment methods. Neither a bank name nor a contactless symbol alone assures that a particular card or transaction will work.
Which Indian banks and cards are supported?
Apple Pay: Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards
Apple announced the India launch on September 30, 2026. At launch, it named eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank. Apple’s India eligibility information also cautions that a participating bank may not support every card type. Do not assume that all Axis credit cards, Axis debit or prepaid cards, or cards from other Indian banks are eligible. Samsung Pay: check the live India card table
Samsung India describes card payments with eligible debit and credit cards and publishes issuer and card-network eligibility on its service page. The table is the relevant check: a bank being listed does not establish that every card it issues is supported. Outside India: country support is not a card guarantee
Apple maintains a country and region list with issuer information; Samsung publishes supported markets and device information. Presence on a supported-market list does not guarantee that every issuer, card type, device or feature works there. Check the bank’s terms for the exact card and destination. Does Samsung Pay support UPI, and does Apple Pay?
Samsung’s India materials describe linking a bank account through UPI and using the linked account for payments and transfers. Samsung’s FAQ states a maximum transfer of ₹1 lakh. That figure is Samsung’s stated limit for its service FAQ; it should not be read as a universal UPI limit or a guarantee that every bank permits the same transaction.

Apple’s India launch information describes eligible card payments and does not identify UPI support. On the available official India information, do not treat Apple Pay as a UPI app or assume it can make UPI payments.

Where can you use each wallet?
In stores
Apple says in-store payment requires an NFC contactless-enabled terminal, a merchant that accepts the card network, and a participating issuer. Samsung also describes NFC-enabled card payments. Apple describes payments in apps and on the web as well as in stores. Whether checkout offers Apple Pay still depends on merchant implementation and the eligible card. Samsung’s India service information describes NFC card payments and UPI-linked payments; check the merchant’s checkout options rather than assuming every online seller accepts Samsung Pay. How to choose between Apple Pay and Samsung Pay
- Start with your phone. Apple Pay requires supported Apple hardware; Samsung Pay requires a compatible Samsung device. Confirm that your exact model and software are supported for your market. Samsung supported markets and devices
- Check the exact payment method. For Apple Pay in India, check whether your Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card is eligible. For Samsung Pay, consult Samsung’s current India card table or confirm that your bank account can be linked for UPI. Ask the issuer about the exact card rather than relying on its name alone. How do their security and privacy approaches differ?
Apple says the actual card number is not stored on the device or Apple servers and is not shared with merchants. Its India announcement describes a unique Device Account Number, encrypted and stored in the Secure Element, and says Apple does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to the user. What the availability figures mean
Apple’s September 30, 2026 India launch announcement says Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions and has more than 11,000 bank and network partners. Those are Apple’s global figures; they do not mean all those partners or cards are available in India. Apple’s announcement
Enrollment and approval for a particular payment remain dependent on the issuer, card type, market, device and merchant. Samsung’s eligibility table and both companies’ supported-market information can change, so check the live official pages before relying on a wallet.
