Apple Pay launched in India on September 30, 2026, initially supporting eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. You can add a supported card through Apple Wallet or the Axis Mobile Banking app, then use Apple Pay for contactless in-store payments and supported app and website checkouts. Not every Axis card is necessarily eligible, and Apple has not announced a timetable for adding other Indian banks.

What Apple Pay’s India launch includes

Apple announced Apple Pay in India on September 30, 2026. At launch, it is available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch; Apple says Mac support is coming soon. Apple describes payments in stores, apps and on the web, so availability depends on the merchant accepting Apple Pay or contactless payments.

Apple’s launch announcement says Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions and has more than 11,000 bank and network partners worldwide. Those are global figures, not counts of Indian banks or local acceptance.

Which Axis cards and devices can you use?

Apple’s issuer listing and Axis Bank’s announcement identify eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards as supported. This does not mean every Axis credit card qualifies: Apple cautions that some card types may not be supported. Check the issuer listing for your specific card before setup: Apple Pay participating banks and card issuers in India.

Where you can pay with Apple Pay

  • In stores: Use it at a checkout that accepts contactless payments, typically indicated by the contactless symbol or Apple Pay logo. Hold your supported device near the payment terminal and authenticate as prompted.
  • In apps: Choose Apple Pay at checkout in an app that offers it, then confirm the payment on your device.
  • On websites: Select Apple Pay where it is offered to avoid repeatedly entering card details.

Acceptance is determined by the merchant and checkout. Apple Pay’s launch does not mean every Indian shop, app or website accepts it. If a transaction or card verification fails, Axis Bank provides customer support guidance at its Apple Pay support page.

How Apple Pay protects card details

Apple says card numbers are not shared with merchants and are not stored on Apple’s servers. Mastercard says its tokenisation technology uses a unique, cryptographically secured token for each Apple Pay transaction rather than sharing the card details with the merchant. Payments also use device authentication, such as the authentication method available on the device, before the transaction is authorized.

Will more Indian banks be added?

Apple says it will update its India issuer list as additional banks are added. It has not published a timetable or named a next Indian issuer, so support for HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI or another bank should not be assumed until that bank appears in Apple’s listing.

What the launch means for Axis customers

For customers with an eligible Axis Bank credit card, Apple Pay offers another way to pay without presenting the physical card or repeatedly typing its details at supported checkouts. The practical first step is to check whether your particular card type is listed, then add and verify it through Wallet or Axis Mobile Banking.
