Safari beta code reportedly detects Google page promotions for Chrome or the Google app and records whether users appear to engage with them. That is an experiment described in a report—not confirmation Apple will release the feature.
What Safari is reportedly detecting
According to 9to5Mac’s October 5, 2026 report, testing began with iOS 27.2 beta 2. Safari reportedly injects JavaScript on certain Google home and search results pages to look for visible elements promoting Chrome or the Google app.

The reported script also checks for links associated with those apps, including custom URL schemes and App Store IDs. The account describes detection of promotions on Google pages; it does not establish that Safari blocks them or monitors all Google activity.

When it detects a promotion, the code can reportedly log whether the promotion appeared, whether the user seems to be signed in to a Google account, and whether the user interacted with it. The interaction may be classified as accepted or dismissed.

The report does not explain whether these records leave the device, how long they are retained, or how they might be used. It therefore does not establish that Apple transmits or shares this information.
Is Apple releasing this in iOS 27.2?
That is not confirmed. The report says the code was being tested in beta and explicitly cautions that testing does not mean the feature will ship with iOS 27.2. As of the report, Apple had not publicly documented the behavior in the iOS 27.2 beta 3 or Safari 27.2 beta release notes.

Apple’s purpose and release decision remain unclear. The report places the experiment amid scrutiny of browser competition, but that context does not establish why Apple is testing the code.
Why browser competition is part of the story
The report notes that Google has cited its efforts to promote Chrome to iPhone users as evidence of competition with Safari. Regulators have also examined whether the Apple–Google search agreement affects incentives to compete, while EU Digital Markets Act requirements address browser choice and defaults.
