The 2024 MacBook Air with M3 remains a capable, quiet ultraportable for study, travel, everyday productivity, and moderate creative work. Its lightweight design, strong everyday performance, and fanless operation are compelling; its value in 2026 depends on the exact memory and storage configuration and how much less it costs than a newer Air. It is not the newest generation, and it is a less suitable choice for work that keeps the processor or graphics busy for long stretches.
What the M3 MacBook Air offers
Apple announced the M3 MacBook Air on March 4, 2024, in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, with availability beginning March 8. The models have 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch displays, respectively. Apple lists an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, and up to 24GB of unified memory for the family. Its announcement specified displays rated up to 500 nits, Wi-Fi 6E, MagSafe charging, two Thunderbolt ports, and a headphone jack. Apple’s announcement also says the laptop can drive two external displays when its built-in display is closed.
The M3 refresh retained much of the preceding M2 Air’s design, according to Macworld’s review. That continuity is not necessarily a drawback: the design was already a thin, light laptop format, but the M3 generation is not a wholesale redesign.

How it performs in everyday use
In Macworld’s Geekbench 6.2.2 testing of its reviewed configuration, the M3 model was about 20 percent faster than the M2 Air in both single-core and multi-core results. That is a benchmark comparison from one outlet, not a guarantee of the same speedup in every app. For common mobile work—documents, browsing, video calls, and moderate creative tasks—the M3’s performance and silent operation make a persuasive combination.

The Air uses the same M3 chip as the M3 MacBook Pro, but it has no fan, as Macworld notes. Under sustained heavy CPU or GPU workloads, heat can limit performance over time. Tom’s Hardware’s testing likewise found silent operation under load while documenting heat and sustained-performance limits in its stress testing. This makes the Air a good fit for bursts of demanding work, but not the strongest choice if long rendering, compiling, or other continuous heavy workloads are central to your day.
Battery life: strong, but dependent on the test
Apple claims up to 18 hours of battery life. Its support documentation explains that this figure comes from Apple testing preproduction systems configured with 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD; real runtime varies with configuration and use. See Apple’s MacBook Air specifications and battery-test notes.

Tom’s Hardware measured more than 15 hours for both M3 Air sizes in a 2024 test involving web browsing, video streaming, and simple OpenGL activity over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. Its 13-inch result was about ten minutes longer than its 15-inch result, a gap the reviewers said could reflect ordinary run-to-run variation. Those results are evidence from that particular protocol, not a promised runtime for every owner. Tom’s Hardware’s review describes the test.

Memory, storage, and external displays
Choose memory and SSD capacity with your expected use in mind: Tom’s Hardware says these components are not user-upgradeable. Consider how many demanding apps you tend to keep open and how much of your working file library you want stored locally, rather than assuming the maximum configuration is necessary. Memory upgrades can add substantially to the cost, so compare the price of the exact configuration you need with newer Air models.
The M3 Air has two Thunderbolt ports, so people with several wired peripherals may need a compatible USB-C hub or dock. Check that any dock supports the displays, charging, and other devices you intend to connect; no particular dock is evaluated here. For a two-external-display setup, Apple’s stated support requires the laptop’s built-in display to be closed. Apple’s announcement specifies that condition.

Is the M3 MacBook Air worth buying in 2026?
It can be, if a seller’s current price makes the exact M3 configuration meaningfully cheaper than a comparable newer Air and it has enough memory and storage for your needs. The M3 is the 2024 generation, not the newest Air, and the evidence here does not establish a current price for any market or seller. Apple’s U.S. launch prices—$1,099 for the 13-inch and $1,299 for the 15-inch—are historical figures, not today’s prices. Apple’s 2024 announcement gives those launch prices.
Apple Certified Refurbished search results have included 13-inch M3 listings, but that does not establish that a particular configuration is available now. A 2026 Macworld buying guide describes refurbished stock as inconsistent. Before buying new or refurbished, confirm the live local price, exact SKU, condition, and warranty, then compare against a newer Air with similar memory and storage.

Should M1 or M2 owners upgrade?
For an M2 Air owner whose laptop handles current work comfortably, the M3’s benchmark lead alone is not a compelling reason to replace it: Macworld describes the M3 update as leaving much of the M2 design intact. An upgrade is easier to justify if a specific limitation matters—such as the need for more performance, a different screen size, or the M3 model’s two-external-display support with the lid closed—and the price works for you.
An M1 owner should make the same needs-and-cost comparison rather than treating the generation number as the decision. The available benchmark comparison here measures M3 against M2, not M1, so it does not establish a quantified M1-to-M3 speed gain. If your current laptop is limiting your work, compare the M3 and newer Air configurations that fit your workload and budget.
What reviewers liked and where they differed
Stuff awarded the M3 MacBook Air 5/5, praising its design, low weight, and keyboard while flagging expensive upgrades, its similarity to the M2 Air, and the display notch among its reservations. That score is Stuff’s judgment, not a universal ranking. Together with the testing above, the review points to a clear strength: a light, silent computer that handles ordinary work well, with sustained-load limits and configuration cost to weigh before purchase.
