The 2026 Mac Studio with M5 Ultra is a specialist desktop for people whose work can use its large unified-memory capacity, graphics resources and professional connectivity. Apple lists a U.S. starting price of $5,499, while Tom’s Guide reports that its reviewed configuration was valued at $12,299. That makes the key question less “Is it fast?” than “Will your actual applications and projects use enough of its capabilities to justify the price?”

What is new about the M5 Ultra Mac Studio?

Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with availability scheduled to begin September 22. It is a compact professional desktop built around Apple silicon, designed for demanding creative work and local AI workloads rather than everyday computing. Tom’s Guide describes it as an option for professionals who need more power than an iMac or Mac mini, while noting that many ordinary desktop users can spend less.

The most consequential feature for some buyers is memory: the M5 Ultra starts at 96GB of unified memory and can be configured with 256GB or 512GB. Apple specifies 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. That capacity may help keep large datasets or AI models in memory, but it does not by itself guarantee that a particular model or application will run well; software support, model size, and configuration matter.

Apple chief hardware officer Johny Srouji called Mac Studio “the ultimate desktop for on-device AI and the world’s most demanding pro workflows” in the August 2026 announcement. That is Apple’s promotional description, not an independent performance finding.

How fast is it, and what do the performance claims mean?

Apple reports the following comparisons for the M5 Ultra. These are vendor-reported “up to” results, not a promise that every application will see the same improvement.

Claim What Apple compared or specified
Up to 1.3× higher multithreaded CPU performance Versus M3 Ultra, in Apple’s selected benchmark comparisons (2026).
Up to 4.3× peak AI compute performance Versus M3 Ultra, in Apple’s selected benchmark comparisons (2026).
Up to 1.8× faster graphics Versus the prior generation, as reported by Apple (2026).
1.2TB/s memory bandwidth; up to 512GB unified memory Apple’s M5 Ultra specifications (2026).

Apple says its August 2026 performance tests used preproduction systems: an M5 Ultra with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory; an M3 Ultra with a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory; and M1 Ultra systems. The results came from selected industry-standard benchmarks and are described by Apple as approximate performance for Mac Studio. The test configuration differs from the M5 Ultra’s 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU base specification, so the reported multipliers should not be treated as results for every retail configuration or application. The independent evidence cited here is more limited. Tom’s Guide reviewed a 30-core CPU/64-core GPU system with 256GB memory and 4TB storage, valued at $12,299. Its reviewer reported strong performance and said the machine stayed cool and quiet during demanding game and video-rendering tests. Those observations describe that reviewer’s unit and conditions; they do not establish how it ranks across other applications or against current competing workstations.

For local AI, the memory choice is particularly important. More capacity can make larger models or datasets practical to keep in memory, but expected speed and usability depend on the model, application, and whether the software takes advantage of Apple silicon. For video and other media work, consider project size and storage separately: memory capacity does not replace the space needed for source footage, caches, and exports.

Apple also describes connecting multiple Mac Studio systems over Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA for distributed AI inference, claiming up to 3× performance compared with one system. Treat that as Apple’s stated capability, not a workload-independent guarantee; the benefit depends on software and the task being distributed.

How much does the Mac Studio M5 Ultra cost?

Tom’s Guide reported a U.S. starting price of $5,499 for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio in 2026. Its reviewed configuration—30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 256GB memory and 4TB storage—was valued at $12,299. Those are the publication’s reported U.S. prices, not a guarantee of current price or availability; check Apple or a retailer for the price of the exact configuration in your region.

The gap between the entry configuration and the reviewed machine illustrates why it is important to price the whole system you need. Memory and SSD upgrades can materially change the total, and the Mac Studio is only part of a desktop setup if you also need a display, storage, or other peripherals.

Who should buy it—and who should not?

It makes sense when your work can use the headroom

  • You run professional video, graphics or other compute-heavy applications where the M5 Ultra’s CPU and GPU resources can reduce meaningful bottlenecks.
  • You need substantial unified memory for local AI models, large datasets or demanding media projects, and your software supports the workflows you intend to run.
  • You have a complex desk setup that benefits from six Thunderbolt 5 ports, 10Gb Ethernet, SDXC UHS-II and extensive external-display support.

Consider a less expensive desktop if you do not

  • Your use is primarily everyday productivity, browsing and general home computing; you may not benefit enough from the Ultra’s additional capacity to justify its premium.
  • Your workload is not known to scale with the available CPU, GPU or memory resources. Apple’s headline comparisons do not establish a universal advantage in every application.
  • You have not priced the required memory, storage and peripherals together. A lower-cost machine that already meets the workload may be a better purchase.

Tom’s Guide’s review similarly argues that a professional video editor or someone running complex AI models locally may benefit, while everyday users should consider a less expensive desktop such as the M6 Mac mini. That is the publication’s purchase advice, not a direct benchmark comparison establishing which machine is faster for every task.

How to decide whether it is worth the premium

  1. Start with your applications. Identify the specific editing, rendering, graphics or AI tools you use, and confirm they support the hardware and features your workflow requires.
  2. Estimate memory needs. Choose a memory tier based on the models, datasets and projects you actually expect to keep active—not simply the largest number available.
  3. Size storage independently. Account for working files, source media and exports, then decide whether the built-in SSD capacity or external Thunderbolt storage suits your workflow.
  4. Map your desk setup. Count displays, peripherals, card-reader needs and network requirements, and check Apple’s supported display combinations for your resolutions and refresh rates.
  5. Compare the complete price with a real alternative. Include the selected Mac Studio configuration and any required display or storage, then compare it with a less expensive desktop that meets the same workload.
  6. Look for evidence from your own software. Apple’s selected comparisons and one reviewer’s hands-on observations do not provide a standardized ranking against current workstation platforms. Seek results for the applications and tasks that matter to you.

Verdict

The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is compelling on paper for professionals whose work can use very high unified-memory capacity, powerful graphics and extensive connectivity in a compact desktop. Its strongest case is a workload with a clear need for those capabilities—especially local AI or demanding creative projects. At a reported U.S. entry price of $5,499 and with higher configurations costing substantially more, it is difficult to justify for general-purpose use. Buy it for a measured need in your workflow, not just for Apple’s largest performance multipliers.
