Yes—Apple moved ahead of Samsung in Europe’s operator (carrier) channel in Q2 2026, according to Counterpoint Research. Apple held 37% of that channel, compared with Samsung’s 34%. This is a channel-specific result, not proof that Apple led every measure of total European smartphone sales.
What the Q2 2026 figures show
Counterpoint Research’s October 7, 2026 insight reports that Apple became the leading smartphone brand in Europe’s operator channel during Q2 2026. The shares, as reported by 9to5Mac from Counterpoint, show a clear change from the year-earlier quarter:

These are shares of smartphone sales through operators, not year-over-year growth rates and not shares of all European sales. The comparison is sourced to Counterpoint Research’s 2026 data as reported by 9to5Mac; Counterpoint’s October 7 insight identifies the report and its author, Jan Stryjak.
Did Apple outsell Samsung across Europe?
Not necessarily. The finding establishes Apple’s lead in the operator route to sale—phones sold through mobile carriers, often alongside contracts. It does not establish that Apple led the open market, which includes sales outside operators, or every combined measure of European smartphone sales. The reported 37% and 34% figures are channel shares; they should not be read as unit totals or as the brands’ shares of the whole market.

How the operator channel compared with other sales measures
Counterpoint’s October insight says European operator-channel smartphone sales declined less than other reported sales measures in Q2 2026:

All three are year-over-year sales changes reported by Counterpoint Research for Q2 2026. They are distinct from a separate Counterpoint shipment update: that report put European smartphone shipments at 35 million units, down 10% year over year, the lowest second-quarter tally in three years. Shipments and sales are different measures, so the shipment decline should not be substituted for the October insight’s 8% total-sales decline. Counterpoint’s August 19, 2026 shipment update says Western Europe performed better than expected while Eastern Europe saw a significant decline.

Why operators held up better, according to Counterpoint
Jan Stryjak, Counterpoint Research associate director, attributes the operator channel’s relative resilience to its higher-end mix, premium-brand skew and greater use of contract purchases. He also points to pressure on lower-end phones from rising memory costs. In a statement quoted by 9to5Mac, Stryjak said:
“Smartphone sales through operators in Europe are typically more high-end than through the open market, as more are purchased on a contract. They are also more skewed towards more premium brands like Apple, Samsung, and Google. The collapse of the low-end of the smartphone market so far in 2026 because of the memory price crisis has therefore benefitted the operator channel, which has declined comparatively less than the open market.”

This is Stryjak’s explanation of the pattern, not a quantified estimate of how much contracts, brand mix or memory costs contributed. The quotation was reported by 9to5Mac on October 6, 2026.
What the report does—and does not—say about phones
The result concerns Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphones as brands, but Counterpoint’s cited material does not name a winning device model or show that one particular iPhone drove Apple’s gain. It also does not establish that a specific Galaxy model caused Samsung’s decline. The channel-share figures alone are not a product comparison or endorsement.

What could happen next
Stryjak said the operator channel could continue gaining share over the next few quarters if pressure on the lower end of the market persists. He also noted that increased promotions by independent retailers could help mitigate price rises and support open-market demand. These are possibilities, not confirmed outcomes; the Q2 figures do not determine how the channels will perform in later quarters.
