Apple’s October 13, 2026 announcements put the company closer to the center of the smart home: a new HomeView hub and a coordinated set of Apple Home Collection accessories developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The move addresses a familiar friction point—assembling devices that work together—but Apple has not demonstrated that it has solved smart-home reliability or ease of use for every household. “Tired of waiting” is a fair editorial reading of the strategy, not a motive Apple has stated.
What Apple announced
Apple introduced two connected pieces of its home strategy on October 13, 2026. HomeView is a central screen and control point; Apple Home Collection is a range of cameras, a doorbell, a lock, thermostats, and sensors designed for the Apple Home app.
HomeView is a shared home hub with personal features
Apple describes HomeView as a tabletop or wall-mounted device with a 7-inch Liquid Retina display. It combines smart-home controls with Siri AI, FaceTime, home monitoring, and hands-free automations. Face recognition is intended to personalize the experience for different household members. Apple marketing executive Greg Joswiak said it is “designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user.” That is the company’s positioning, not an independently tested assessment.

Apple said preorders begin October 13, 2026, and availability begins November 13. HomeView is not available for sale in the European Union because Siri AI is not currently available there in iOS.

Home Collection brings Apple Home-branded setup to accessories
The collection includes LG indoor and outdoor cameras, a wired LG video doorbell, an LG smart deadbolt, thermostats developed with LG and Schneider Electric, and temperature and room sensors. Apple says a customer can start setup by tapping an iPhone, then configure and control these accessories in Apple Home without a separate accessory app or account. The products can be used individually or as a connected system.
Apple says collection availability starts in December 2026, with select accessories following in early 2027. Its October announcement lists the following U.S. starting prices:

The core promise is less fragmentation: choose compatible devices, set them up through one app, and coordinate them with scenes and automations. Apple says Collection accessories can be combined in Apple Home—for example, a thermostat, camera, lock, and HomePod can participate in a shared routine. If the experience works as described, customers may have fewer accessory apps and accounts to manage.

- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
That is meaningful, but it is not proof that Apple has fixed smart-home problems broadly. The announcements do not establish independent reliability results, how many households will adopt the products, or whether the setup is easier in practice than alternatives. Nor do they quantify a single “biggest problem” across smart-home users. The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: Apple is trying to reduce setup and coordination friction within its own ecosystem.
Apple Home still includes third-party devices
The collection does not replace Apple Home’s existing compatibility approach. Apple says its Works with Apple Home and Matter catalog includes thousands of accessories. Apple’s developer documentation says iOS 16.1 and later supports Matter, and that Matter accessories added to Apple Home can be controlled through the Home app, Siri, Control Center, and third-party HomeKit apps.

That means a buyer is not limited to Apple’s co-developed products. Matter compatibility can broaden device choice, but the label alone does not establish that every feature works identically across brands or platforms. Before buying, confirm support for the specific functions you need—such as camera history, automations, or lock controls—in the device’s current specifications.

What Apple says about privacy—and what is not verified
Apple says Home app data is end-to-end encrypted so Apple, LG, and Schneider cannot read it. It says camera footage is processed on a home hub or in Private Cloud Compute and, with a supported iCloud+ plan, stored encrypted for 10 days. Those are Apple’s claims. The announcements and platform documentation do not include an independent privacy audit or hands-on security test, so they should not be read as independent verification.
Storage is also conditional: the stated 10-day camera history depends on a supported iCloud+ plan. Review the applicable plan and device requirements before relying on cloud camera history, and distinguish those terms from local processing or storage behavior.
How to judge whether the announcements matter for your home
- Check your ecosystem and device needs. If you already use Apple Home, compare the Collection with compatible Matter accessories on the exact features you need, not just the compatibility label.
- Account for the control point. Decide whether a shared screen and hub such as HomeView fits your household, and verify that the features you want are available in your region. Apple says HomeView is not for sale in the EU while Siri AI is unavailable there in iOS.
- Compare the real setup burden. Apple says its Collection does not require a separate accessory app or account. For other devices, check what accounts, apps, hubs, and setup steps are required before purchase.
- Review privacy and storage terms. Check where footage is processed, what is stored, how long it is retained, and whether a subscription is required for the features you intend to use.
- Confirm the price and timing. Treat Apple’s October 2026 starting prices and staged availability as announcement details; check current availability and pricing for your country before buying.
Apple Home vice president of Hardware Engineering Matthew Costello said the collection “makes it easy to choose smart home accessories with confidence.” The announcements show a more coordinated product strategy, but whether it earns that confidence will depend on real-world compatibility, setup, privacy, and reliability over time.
