The iPhone 16 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are not the same kind of phone. The iPhone 16 is a conventional 6.1-inch smartphone that Apple announced in 2024 at a U.S. starting price of $799. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is a foldable that Samsung listed in 2026 at $2,099.99 in the U.S., with a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch main display when opened. The launch-price gap is $1,300.99, but the two starting configurations do not match on storage, so the number is a starting point for comparison rather than a like-for-like price difference.
Start with the form factor
Before comparing processors or cameras, decide what kind of device you want in your hand. The iPhone 16 is built for one-handed use: it fits a pocket, unlocks in a single motion and gives you one screen to work with. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra folds. Closed, you get a 6.5-inch cover display; open, you get an 8-inch main display that works more like a small tablet, with room for side-by-side apps and multitasking that a 6.1-inch screen cannot offer.
Samsung lists the Fold8 Ultra at 215g. Apple’s 2024 launch material for the iPhone 16 does not state a weight in the sources used here, so a direct portability comparison is not possible from the published figures. What is clear is that a foldable is a different daily tool. Many buyers will carry the Fold8 Ultra as a phone and use its open screen when they need more space, while the iPhone 16 is simply the phone.

Launch prices are the most visible difference, but they are not a like-for-like comparison because the base storage tiers are different.

The $1,300.99 difference is the gap between those two starting prices. The Fold8 Ultra’s entry model has twice the base storage of the iPhone 16’s entry model, so the gap overstates the price difference for an identical storage level. Because the iPhone 16 figure dates from 2024 and the Fold8 Ultra figure from 2026, check current retail prices before deciding. Regional pricing, carrier deals and trade-in offers change, and Samsung’s launch material notes that availability varies by market.

Cameras: what the numbers do and do not tell you
The Fold8 Ultra’s camera list looks more ambitious on paper: a 200MP wide sensor, a 50MP ultrawide and a 10MP telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom. Apple’s iPhone 16 lists a 48MP Fusion main camera with a 2x telephoto option and an Ultra Wide camera. Megapixel counts describe sensor resolution, not how a photo looks. Processing, lens quality, low-light performance and the way each phone handles zoom all shape the final image, and none of those are shown by the spec sheets alone. No independent side-by-side photo testing was available for this comparison, so this article does not rank the two cameras.

Samsung gives a specific battery capacity of 5000mAh and a stated maximum of 27 hours of video playback for the Fold8 Ultra. Apple’s launch material says the iPhone 16 improves battery life but does not give a comparable capacity or playback test method. That means the endurance figures cannot be set against each other, and neither spec sheet proves which phone will last longer through a working day. A larger unfolded display also draws power differently from a 6.1-inch screen, so real-world results will depend on how each device is used.

Processor and software
The iPhone 16 runs Apple’s A18 chip; the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra runs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. No independent performance benchmarks comparing these two chips were available for this article, so claims about which phone is faster would go beyond the evidence.
The software experiences are different. Apple positions the iPhone 16 around iOS and Apple Intelligence. Samsung positions the Fold8 Ultra around Android, Galaxy AI, foldable multitasking and a list of supported apps. Feature availability can vary by region and by app, so do not assume the two phones offer equivalent AI features where you live. At launch, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, Kaiann Drance, said: “iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus mark the beginning of a new era for iPhone with Apple Intelligence delivering powerful, personal, and private experiences to our users.” That is a statement of Apple’s intent for the product, not independent evidence of how its AI compares with Samsung’s.

Which phone fits your use
- Choose the iPhone 16 if you want a standard pocket phone with one screen, a lower launch price and a 128GB starting configuration that suits your storage needs.
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you regularly read, edit documents, or run two apps side by side, and you are prepared to pay a much higher launch price for a larger, foldable screen.
- Do not choose on megapixels alone. Look for independent camera samples or reviews before deciding which camera you prefer.
- Compare current prices in your market. Launch figures from 2024 and 2026 are a starting point, not today’s offer.
