An iPad can control Apple Home accessories, but it cannot serve as the home hub in the latest version of Apple Home. Think of the iPad as the screen you use to operate devices; a supported HomePod or Apple TV 4K is the hardware that enables hub-dependent features such as remote access and automations.
Control panel and home hub are different jobs
A control panel is an interface for viewing and operating accessories. The Home app on iPad can connect to and control smart home accessories, so an iPad can be useful as a room-side screen or a device you carry around the house.
A home hub is supported Apple hardware that provides capabilities the iPad does not. Apple states that iPad is not supported as a home hub with the new version of Apple Home, while the Home app remains usable on iPad for accessory control. See Apple’s latest Apple Home guidance for iPad.

What a supported Apple home hub enables
Remote access
To control your home remotely from iPad, Apple says you need a home hub. Its iPad instructions identify Apple TV 4K or HomePod as options and say the hub and iPad must use the same Apple Account. An Apple TV 4K or HomePod signed in to that account is set up automatically as a hub, according to Apple’s remote-control instructions for iPad.

Automations and other features
Apple’s current Home guide lists a hub such as Apple TV 4K or HomePod as required for remote access, sharing, notifications, automations, HomeKit Secure Video, and Adaptive Lighting. HomePod can also act as a hub for HomeKit or Matter accessories, enabling control while away and automations based on time, location, or an accessory action, as described in Apple’s HomePod home-control guide.
Which Apple hub should you choose?
HomePod mini
Consider HomePod mini if you want a compact, dedicated Apple home hub. Apple’s US store listed it at $129 on October 7, 2026; that is a time- and region-specific listing, not a global or permanent price. Check the Apple US HomePod mini listing for current availability and pricing.

Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K is another supported hub option. It may suit you if you also want a streaming device; it is not necessary to buy one solely to use an iPad as a Home control screen if you already have a compatible hub.

Thread support is model-specific. Apple identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples of Thread-enabled hubs for Thread-enabled Matter accessories. Do not assume every Apple TV 4K configuration supports Thread. Apple’s home hub setup guide covers the listed hub and Thread requirements.

Accessory setup: Matter and Thread can change the requirements
Setup rules are not identical for every accessory or device. Apple’s iPad accessory setup guide says a home hub is required for Matter accessories in its documented setup instructions and describes Thread-capable hub requirements. Separately, Apple says a Matter accessory can be added and controlled from an iPhone running iOS 18 or later without a home hub, while recommending a hub for the best experience. That iPhone-specific exception should not be assumed to apply to every iPad setup path.
For a Thread-enabled Matter accessory, Apple says you need a Thread-enabled home hub or a supported third-party border router. Check the exact accessory instructions and Apple’s Home accessory setup guide for iPad before buying hardware.

- You already own a supported hub: Keep using the iPad as the Home app screen; you generally do not need to buy another hub just to control accessories from it.
- You want remote access or automations but have no hub: Choose a supported HomePod or Apple TV 4K, then use the iPad as the interface.
- You mainly want a fixed screen: An iPad may be convenient to place where you use Home controls. Mounting, visibility, power, and whether the display behavior suits your household are practical considerations; Apple’s cited setup guidance does not compare these factors or establish a best mounting arrangement.
- You are adding Thread or Matter accessories: Verify the hub model and configuration against the accessory’s requirements, especially for Thread.
How Apple describes hub setup
Apple says HomePod mini and HomePod become hubs automatically. Apple TV becomes a hub when it is added to a room in the Home app. If remote control from iPad is your goal, make sure the hub and iPad use the same Apple Account. Apple’s hub setup instructions detail the setup process and Thread-capable examples.
