Yes. Apple’s Share Item Location feature creates a temporary, authenticated link for an AirTag or compatible Find My accessory. You can submit it to a participating airline or another supported third party so staff can see the item’s latest available location. Sharing stops when the bag is reunited, when you turn it off, or automatically after seven days.

What Share Item Location changes

Find My previously let you see an AirTag’s location yourself. Share Item Location adds a controlled handoff: an airline or other authorized recipient can open a link and view an updating map without receiving permanent access to your Find My account.

Apple introduced the feature as a public beta with iOS 18.2 in November 2024. In a January 26, 2026 announcement, Apple said more than 50 airlines had partnered directly to accept these links. Availability still depends on the carrier, airport, country or region, and the carrier’s baggage system.

What you need before a trip

  • An AirTag or another accessory that supports Apple Find My.
  • The tracker paired with your Apple Account and placed inside the checked bag or other item.
  • An iPhone, iPad, or Mac running software that supports Share Item Location. The feature launched with iOS 18.2, so updating to current software is the safest approach.
  • A participating airline or third party that provides a submission channel for the link.

Apple says the function is not available in every country or region. A carrier may support it only through selected airports or a specific online form.

How to send an AirTag location for lost luggage

  1. Open Find My. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Find My app; on a Mac, open Find My and select the Items section.
  2. Select the missing item. Choose the AirTag or compatible Find My accessory attached to the delayed bag.
  3. Create a Share Item Location link. Follow the sharing command shown for that item and confirm that you want to share its location.
  4. Open the airline’s baggage case. Use the carrier’s delayed- or lost-baggage form, app, or an airport agent, then paste or attach the link where requested.
  5. Keep the case reference. The airline can associate the link with your baggage report while its recipient account is authenticated.
  6. Stop sharing after recovery. In Find My, end sharing when the bag is back. Otherwise, the link ends automatically after seven days or when Apple detects the item has been reunited, whichever comes first.

Examples of airline workflows

China Airlines says passengers can provide the link through its lost-baggage form or at a service counter. Air India’s process attaches the link to a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) in its app or website. Other carriers may use different forms, and an airline that accepts Find My links in one region may not offer the same route everywhere.

What the recipient can see

An authorized recipient opens the link and authenticates with an Apple Account or, where supported, a partner email address. The page can show the item’s map location when available, the time of the latest update, the registered owner’s phone number, and the AirTag serial number. It does not provide the recipient with your complete Find My item list.

Because the link is intended for a small number of authenticated recipients, send it only through the airline’s official baggage channel. Treat anyone who asks for the raw link outside that process as untrusted.

Privacy and security

Temporary access, not account sharing

The link is designed to be temporary and can be stopped manually. It is separate from handing over your Apple Account credentials.

Encryption and relay privacy

Apple describes Find My communications as end-to-end encrypted and anonymous. Apple says it cannot see the identity or location of devices that relay a finding through the Find My network.

What happens when the bag is offline

The map updates only when the AirTag is detected by the Find My network or otherwise reports a location. A timestamp tells the recipient how recent the displayed finding is; a stale timestamp does not prove that the bag is still at that place. Metal containers, dense buildings, remote areas, or a powered-off device can delay the next update.

Reported effect on baggage recovery

Apple cited SITA figures in its 2026 announcement claiming a 26% reduction in baggage delays among carriers using Share Item Location and a 90% reduction in luggage described as “truly lost” or unrecoverable. These are carrier-reported outcomes attributed by Apple to SITA, not an independent test of every airline’s operation.

The wider infrastructure is significant: Apple said the Find My network included more than one billion Apple devices in 2024. SITA said its WorldTracer baggage system was used by more than 500 airlines and ground handlers at more than 2,800 airports. Those figures describe network and system scale, not a guarantee that a particular airport will produce a live AirTag update.

MSEBENT Tracker Tag - 2 Pack [Apple MFi Certified] Bluetooth Trackers Works with Apple Find My (iOS Only) - IP67 Waterproof Item Finders | Track Keys, Wallet, Luggage, Backpack
  • 【4-Pack Value Set】 This set of four tracking tags includes black and white tags for everyday item tracking. Designed to work with the Find My app and Find My network for iOS devices only, these tracker tags are suitable for keeping track of keys, luggage, wallets, backpacks, bags, and other daily essentials. They are not for Android devices. Whether used as luggage trackers for iPhone users or for managing everyday items, they provide a simple tracking option for daily use.

For context, Air India said in 2025 that it transports more than 100 million baggage items annually and that more than 99.6% arrive with the customer. The remaining cases still require the airline’s normal baggage-reporting process; an AirTag supplements that process rather than replacing it.

Is an AirTag the right tracker for this use?

For travelers already using Apple devices, an AirTag is the most directly supported option because Share Item Location is built into Find My. Other Find My-compatible trackers can work, but verify compatibility with the exact model and the airline’s workflow before purchasing.

Apple’s January 2026 U.S. pricing lists an AirTag at $29 for one or $99 for four. Those are Apple’s stated U.S. prices; taxes, currency, retailer pricing, and availability can differ. A four-pack suits travelers who routinely check several bags, while one tracker is enough to test the workflow on a single suitcase.

A practical checklist

  • Pair the tracker before leaving home and confirm that Find My shows it.
  • Record the AirTag serial number and your baggage-tag number.
  • Install current iPhone, iPad, or Mac updates.
  • Save the airline’s official delayed-baggage page or app.
  • When a bag is delayed, create one Share Item Location link and submit it through the airline’s case.
  • Check the update timestamp rather than assuming the map is live.
  • End sharing as soon as the bag is recovered.
