For a routine payment to someone you know, the main differences are cash-out fees, account-specific limits, and what happens if something goes wrong. Apple Cash publishes a fee for instant debit-card cash-outs and specific limits for registered accounts. Zelle’s limits come from your bank or credit union. Venmo offers purchase protection only for eligible transactions, while Cash App’s peer-to-peer payments are generally free unless you pay by credit card. None of these services makes every authorized payment easy to reverse.
This comparison covers U.S. services and current official terms checked October 7, 2026. Fees, availability, eligibility, and limits can change; confirm the amount and terms shown in your app or bank account before sending.
Fees: sending money is not the same as cashing it out
A service can charge nothing to send a person-to-person (P2P) payment but charge for a particular funding method, instant transfer, or eligible purchase. The table separates those routes.

| Apple Cash | Apple Cash does not charge a fee for funding a P2P transfer with a supported payment card. The card issuer may charge separately. Apple Cash terms | Apple’s Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card costs 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. A standard bank transfer is the alternative without that listed Instant Transfer fee. Apple Cash limits and transfer information |
| Zelle | Consumer transfers typically have no fee, but Zelle advises checking with your financial institution. In a Q1 2026 survey of participating institutions, Zelle/Early Warning Services reported that 99.40% of linked consumer checking and savings accounts did not charge to send, receive, or request money. That survey result is not a promise about an individual account. Zelle Help Center · Zelle support/contact | Not stated as a universal fee in the cited Zelle materials; check your bank or credit union. |
| Venmo | Fees depend on the operation and payment method. A card issuer may separately charge a cash-advance fee when you use a credit card to send money. Venmo User Agreement | Venmo’s Purchase Protection page states a 2.99% seller transaction fee for qualifying goods-and-services or business-profile transactions. Buyers pay no separate protection fee on eligible transactions. Venmo Purchase Protection |
| Cash App | Sending is free unless you choose a credit card; the fee for that transaction is shown in the app. Cash App U.S. Terms | Not stated as a universal cash-out fee in the cited terms; check the fee shown for the specific transfer route in your account. |
For Apple Cash, an instant debit-card transfer typically posts immediately but can take up to 30 minutes, and security checks can take longer. A debit card must be eligible for Instant Transfer. Apple Support

Limits: Apple Cash publishes figures; the other services depend on your account or bank
| Service | Published or applicable limit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Cash | For a registered standard account, Apple lists a $20,000 balance cap; P2P sends and receives of $1–$10,000 per transaction and $10,000 per rolling seven days; and bank transfers of $1–$10,000 per transfer and $20,000 per seven days. Apple Support · Green Dot Bank terms | These are published maximums, not guaranteed approvals. Green Dot may apply additional security limits or delay a transaction. Unverified accounts have further restrictions, including a $500 aggregate send/receive threshold; Family accounts and Tap to Cash have lower limits. |
| Zelle | Zelle does not state one universal consumer maximum in the cited FAQ. Zelle consumer FAQ | Your bank or credit union sets the limits. Check its app or ask it directly before relying on a particular amount. |
| Venmo | Venmo may impose sending and transfer limits at its discretion; the applicable limit depends on account and profile. Venmo User Agreement | Check the limit for your personal, business, or charity profile and the transfer you plan to make. |
| Cash App | The cited U.S. terms do not give one standard P2P maximum for every account. Limits may vary over different periods and may be adjusted based on account thresholds and identity information. Cash App U.S. Terms | Check the limit displayed for your account; Cash App may require additional identification above certain thresholds. |
Speed, cancellation, and mistaken recipients
Zelle: fast to an enrolled recipient, difficult to undo
A payment to an enrolled recipient typically arrives within minutes. Once sent to someone who is already enrolled, it cannot be canceled or reversed through Zelle. If the recipient has not enrolled, the payment may be cancelable while pending; check the status and options in your bank’s Zelle experience rather than assuming a payment can be recalled. Zelle Help Center
Apple Cash: distinguish an instant cash-out from a P2P payment
Instant Transfer describes moving Apple Cash to an eligible debit card, not undoing a payment to another person. The cited Apple materials provide transfer timing for cashing out, but do not establish that a completed P2P payment can routinely be reversed. For a payment issue, Apple directs users to check the transaction and contact an Apple Cash specialist through Green Dot. Apple Support: transaction issue
Cash App: processing may start immediately
Cash App says a payment may begin processing immediately and that it is not required to stop, cancel, or recover funds sent to the wrong person. Under its U.S. terms, an unclaimed P2P payment is canceled after 15 days. Cash App U.S. Terms
Venmo: do not assume a personal payment has a purchase dispute route
The cited Venmo materials explain protection for qualifying purchases, not a general promise that ordinary friend-to-friend payments can be recalled. If you are paying for an item, use an explicitly eligible purchase flow and review the transaction details before sending.

Protections: an unauthorized transfer is different from a scam you approved
The distinction that matters most is whether someone accessed your account and sent money without your permission, or whether you personally approved a payment after being deceived. A provider’s investigation and the payment’s eligibility determine what recourse may be available; do not treat reimbursement as automatic.
Unauthorized activity
For a payment you did not make, report it promptly to the institution responsible for the account or payment service and follow its account-security instructions. Zelle says unauthorized payments typically qualify for reimbursement after reporting to the bank or credit union. Apple Cash advises users with an unrecognized P2P transaction to verify the transaction source and account access, secure their Apple Account, and contact a Green Dot Apple Cash specialist. Rank #4
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Apple Cash’s limited-liability provisions for registered balance activity do not apply to money loaded with a supported payment card or the portion of a P2P transfer funded with that card. Read the applicable terms and report the specific transaction rather than assuming all funding routes receive identical treatment. Apple Cash terms

Authorized scams and purchases that go wrong
If you personally sent money because a scammer persuaded you to do so, that is not the same as an intruder making an unauthorized transfer. Zelle says some qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement, but recovery for an authorized scam is not assured. It also does not offer purchase protection for authorized payments when an item never arrives or is not as described. Contact your bank or credit union promptly. Zelle fraud guidance · Zelle security

Venmo Purchase Protection is conditional, not blanket coverage for payments to friends. Its official page identifies potentially eligible situations such as certain in-app and QR-code checkouts, debit-card purchases, business-profile payments, and payments explicitly made for goods and services. Problems may include a missing item, damage, or an item materially different from its listing. Ordinary payments not processed as eligible purchases are excluded, as are categories such as donations, vehicles, real estate, and financial products. Review the transaction’s eligibility and terms before paying. Venmo Purchase Protection
Cash App warns that scams can result in a loss of funds with no recourse. That warning about scam losses should not be read as a determination that every unauthorized transaction is exempt from applicable error or unauthorized-transaction protections; report an unrecognized transaction through the service and follow the relevant terms. - Apple Cash: Available in the 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. A standard registered account requires a U.S. resident aged 18 or older, an eligible Apple device with Wallet, and account registration. Family accounts follow separate rules. Apple Cash is provided by Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC; Apple Payments Services LLC is a service provider, not a bank. Apple Support · Apple Cash terms
- Zelle: Works through participating U.S. banks and credit unions; both sender and recipient need eligible checking or savings accounts. Its speed and limits are tied to bank participation and rules. Zelle consumer FAQ
- Venmo: Fees and limits vary with the operation, funding method, and profile. Its buyer protections are relevant only when the payment qualifies as an eligible purchase, rather than simply because Venmo handled the payment. Venmo User Agreement · Venmo Purchase Protection
- Cash App: Its cited U.S. P2P terms describe personal, non-commercial transfers. Account limits can depend on thresholds and identity information. Cash App U.S. Terms
Which one should you use?
- Choose Apple Cash if you use an eligible Apple device and want a service with published P2P and bank-transfer limits. To avoid Apple’s Instant Transfer fee, use a standard bank transfer rather than an eligible debit-card instant cash-out.
- Choose Zelle when both people have eligible bank accounts and you want money delivered directly through participating banks. Check the sending limit with your own institution, and use it only when you are confident about the recipient and purpose.
- Choose Venmo for an eligible purchase only when the payment is explicitly processed in a qualifying purchase category and the item and transaction meet the protection terms. Do not treat a regular personal payment as protected just because it appears in Venmo.
- Choose Cash App for personal P2P payments when its account-specific terms fit your needs; avoid paying by credit card unless the displayed fee is acceptable.
Before sending any service payment, verify the recipient, amount, funding source, and whether the transaction is being treated as a personal transfer or an eligible purchase. For an unfamiliar recipient, assume that a completed payment may be difficult to recover.
