Apple CarPlay Ultra extends CarPlay beyond the center display: on supported vehicles, it can reach the instrument cluster and other driver-facing screens, combine iPhone and vehicle information, and let drivers control features such as climate and radio. Its themes are designed with each automaker, so the interface can reflect a car’s identity rather than look like a generic Apple screen. Availability is limited to vehicles built with the required automaker integration; ordinary CarPlay support alone is not enough.
What Apple CarPlay Ultra changes
Standard CarPlay puts iPhone apps and information on a vehicle’s infotainment display. Ultra is a broader, vehicle-integrated system. Apple says it can present content across driver-facing screens, including the instrument cluster, bringing navigation and media together with vehicle information and controls.
- Driver displays: The instrument cluster can show customizable speedometer and tachometer designs, fuel and temperature gauges, and information such as tire pressure and advanced-driver-assistance data.
- iPhone features: Maps, media, and iPhone-powered widgets can appear on the car’s screens, including the gauge cluster.
- Vehicle controls: Drivers can use onscreen controls, physical buttons, or Siri for radio, climate, and supported vehicle-specific settings.
Apple’s developer documentation says Ultra is wireless and appears when the vehicle displays turn on while the driver’s iPhone is present. Driving features continue to be powered by the vehicle’s built-in system, rather than relying on the phone for those functions. Apple’s CarPlay developer documentation describes Ultra as “the ultimate iPhone experience for the car.”
How the luxury and customization work
The custom look is designed jointly by Apple and each automaker’s design team. Drivers can choose from curated themes and personalize elements such as colors and wallpapers. The aim is to carry the automaker’s visual identity across the in-car interface, not simply place an identical Apple skin in every vehicle.

Aston Martin says its theme was created with Apple and spans the center touchscreen and driver instrument cluster, with curated personalization that retains the brand’s identity. The result is an interface whose appearance and screen layout depend in part on the participating automaker’s design choices. Aston Martin’s launch announcement describes its implementation.
Which cars have CarPlay Ultra?
Aston Martin was the first manufacturer to deliver CarPlay Ultra. At launch on May 15, 2025, Apple said the system was available with new Aston Martin orders in the United States and Canada. Aston Martin named the DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish as the initial range in those markets, where it said Ultra was standard on new orders. Its announcement also described expansion to global markets within 12 months as a plan; that launch statement is not, by itself, confirmation of current availability in every country or model.

Apple said the rollout would start with Aston Martin and that Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis were among automakers that had committed to work toward support. A commitment is not confirmation that a specific vehicle is now available with Ultra. Check with the automaker or dealer for the exact market, model year, trim, and infotainment hardware before relying on availability.

Apple’s available CarPlay models directory lists more than 800 models compatible with CarPlay generally. That figure does not mean those vehicles support Ultra: Ultra requires the automaker’s integration and compatible next-generation infotainment hardware.

Can an existing CarPlay vehicle get Ultra?
Not simply because it already supports CarPlay. Ultra is integrated with a vehicle’s displays, controls, and underlying infotainment system, so an ordinary CarPlay connection or aftermarket adapter does not establish Ultra compatibility.
Apple said compatible existing Aston Martin vehicles were planned to receive a dealer software update. That does not apply to every Aston Martin or every CarPlay-equipped car; owners should ask a dealer whether their specific vehicle and hardware qualify and whether the update is available in their market.

What you need to use it
Apple states that CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. Both the phone and the vehicle must meet the requirements: a supported iPhone cannot add Ultra to an incompatible car, and a vehicle with Ultra does not make an older or outdated iPhone compatible.

Before buying or updating, verify the vehicle’s model year, trim, market, infotainment hardware, and update eligibility with the automaker or dealer. Also check which displays and vehicle controls the particular implementation exposes; those details can differ by automaker and vehicle.
What to check before choosing a vehicle
- Confirm that the exact vehicle—not merely its brand or its standard CarPlay listing—supports Ultra in your country.
- Ask whether support depends on a particular model year, trim, or infotainment system, and whether existing vehicles qualify for a dealer update.
- Check which screens are integrated and whether the instrument cluster, climate controls, and vehicle-specific settings are included.
- Review the available themes and personalization options for that automaker’s implementation.
- Make sure your iPhone is a 12 or later and runs iOS 18.5 or later.
Apple’s launch framing emphasizes a more unified interface created with automakers. As Apple vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers put it, “With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers, we are reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent.” The practical question for a buyer is whether that integrated experience is available on the particular car they want.
