Apple App Store Screenshot Guidelines: Sizes and Requirements

There is no single App Store screenshot size. Apple requires pixel dimensions based on your app’s platform and device group. Upload one to 10 still images in .jpeg, .jpg, or .png format, with no alpha channel or transparency. For current dimensions, use Apple’s Screenshot specifications table; the values below cover the principal groups listed there.

Prepare the largest required group for every platform your app supports. If the interface is identical across sizes and localizations, Apple can scale those highest-resolution assets down automatically. If layouts, artwork, or text need to change, upload device- or localization-specific files through Media Manager.

App Store screenshot rules at a glance

• Count: Apple accepts one to 10 screenshots.
• Formats: JPEG, JPG, or PNG still images.
• Transparency: Files cannot contain an alpha channel or transparent pixels.
• Dimensions: They depend on platform, device group, and orientation; there is no universal App Store size.
• Orientation: Landscape uses the portrait dimensions reversed.
• Localization: Screenshots can be localized, with specific assets managed in Media Manager.
• Videos: App previews are optional videos with separate rules; their specifications do not replace screenshot requirements.

These are submission limits and file requirements, not recommendations about how many marketing panels to design. Use enough images to explain the product without adding near-duplicates.

Current pixel dimensions by Apple platform

The table lists portrait dimensions first. Reverse width and height for landscape. A row with several dimension pairs reflects the alternatives Apple lists for that device group; choose the pair that matches the device asset you are supplying.

Apple’s full reference also contains older iPhone and iPad groups and Apple Watch dimensions. Do not infer those values from a nearby row. Open the current specification table for the exact group, and use one consistent Apple Watch screenshot size across localizations as Apple instructs.

Why iPhone has several valid pairs

Different generations have different native pixel grids, so Apple groups them rather than accepting one magic width and height. For example, a 6.9-inch submission may be 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, or 1320 × 2868 depending on the device represented. Treat the pair as a file-level requirement: a 1290 × 2796 portrait image is not interchangeable with a 1320 × 2868 image if you intend to target both groups separately.

Choosing native files or Apple scaling

Apple says that when the user interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, you can provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required and let them scale down automatically. That reduces production work, but it does not make every composition suitable for every screen.

Use Media Manager when you need a specific device size or localization rather than relying on the automatically scaled default. Scaling is a convenience, not permission to ignore legibility, cropping, or text expansion.

File and content requirements that commonly cause rejection

Still images only

Export a still image in JPEG, JPG, or PNG. Remove transparency before export; even a PNG that looks opaque can contain an alpha channel. Flatten overlays onto an opaque background and inspect the exported file rather than trusting the design canvas.

One to 10 images

Keep the set within Apple’s one-to-10 limit. Count the still screenshots you submit; an optional app preview video follows a separate workflow and does not turn into an additional screenshot slot.

Orientation and aspect ratio

Portrait and landscape are separate compositions. For a landscape file, reverse the listed dimensions—for example, the iPad 13-inch options become 2752 × 2064 or 2732 × 2048. Do not rotate a portrait file inside a landscape canvas and assume the result is equivalent; check the actual exported pixel dimensions and the content’s orientation.

Localization

Apple allows localized screenshots. Decide which storefront languages need translated text, then upload those variants through Media Manager. A translated caption that no longer fits the original composition is a reason to create a localization-specific asset instead of relying on scaling.

Platform-by-platform preparation checklist

iPhone

• Confirm that the app runs on iPhone and identify whether you will supply the 6.9-inch group.
• Prepare the exact 6.9-inch pair you selected. If you do not supply that group, prepare the required 6.5-inch group instead.
• Use Apple’s documented fallback behavior for smaller groups, but add native 6.3-inch files when scaling damages text or layout.
• Repeat the process for portrait and landscape only when your listing needs both orientations.

iPad

• If the app runs on iPad, prepare the 13-inch group: 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 in portrait.
• Reverse the dimensions for landscape and verify that tablet-specific UI is shown rather than a stretched phone layout.
• Check Apple’s table for any additional older iPad groups relevant to your supported devices.

Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro

• Mac apps need one of Apple’s listed 16:10 sizes; choose the size that matches the product experience you want to show.
• Apple TV accepts 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160.
• Apple Vision Pro uses 3840 × 2160 in Apple’s current table.

For Apple Watch, use the exact model dimensions in Apple’s table and keep the screenshot size consistent across localizations.

How to prepare and upload screenshots in App Store Connect

1. Inventory supported platforms. Record whether the binary supports iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch, or more than one platform.
2. Open Apple’s current dimension table. Match each platform to its device group rather than copying a size from an older project.
3. Capture the app at the target size. Capture real product states, then add any marketing framing in an image editor. Keep important controls and text inside the composition’s safe areas.
4. Export and validate. Confirm the exact width and height in pixels, an opaque background, and a JPEG, JPG, or PNG extension. Check that the image is not accidentally rotated or padded.
5. Build localization variants. Translate text and replace screenshots where the UI changes. Keep the same screenshot size for each Apple Watch localization, as Apple specifies.
6. Open the app record in App Store Connect. Upload media while the version is in an eligible status. Apple names Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, and Developer Rejected as statuses where media can be uploaded.
7. Use Media Manager for exceptions. Add device-specific or localization-specific files instead of replacing the default set when only one group needs a different composition.
8. Review the storefront preview. Check ordering, readable text, orientation, and every localization before submitting the version for review.

2026 device additions and upload availability

Apple’s September 9, 2026 release note added specification entries for iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and Apple Watch Series 12. The same note says iPhone Duo asset uploading would become available later in 2026. Therefore, an entry in the specification reference is an announced requirement, not proof that the corresponding upload control is already enabled in your App Store Connect account. Check the release note and the upload screen immediately before publishing.

Because Apple can add device groups or change availability, treat the current specification page—not a saved design template—as the final authority.

Troubleshooting App Store screenshot problems

“Invalid size” or a dimension mismatch

Cause: The file uses a nearby device group, a scaled canvas, or the wrong orientation.

Fix: Reopen Apple’s table, select the exact target group, and inspect the exported file’s pixel width and height. For landscape, verify that the portrait pair is reversed rather than merely rotated visually.

The PNG uploads but transparency is rejected

Cause: The file contains an alpha channel even though the visible artwork appears solid.

Fix: Flatten the image onto an opaque background, export again, and inspect the file metadata or editor document for alpha before uploading.

The screenshot is accepted but looks soft or text is clipped

Cause: A lower-resolution asset was enlarged, or a single composition was scaled into a device with different safe areas.

Fix: Start from the highest-resolution required group. Add a native asset in Media Manager when scaling changes legibility, spacing, or cropping.

A localization has the wrong language or overflows

Cause: The default screenshot was reused without translating artwork, or translated text is longer than the source.

Fix: Create a localization-specific composition and upload it to that language in Media Manager. Review every text layer at the final pixel size.

A new device appears in Apple’s table but not in the upload interface

Cause: Apple has published the specification before enabling uploads for that device group.

Fix: Check the dated release note and your version’s current App Store Connect status. Do not treat the announcement as confirmation of immediate upload support.

A video requirement is confusing the screenshot checklist

Cause: App previews and screenshots are being planned as one media type.

Fix: Keep still-image dimensions, file formats, and the one-to-10 count in one checklist. Handle optional preview videos under Apple’s separate platform-version and upload guidance.
