Apple announced AirPods Max 2 on 16 March 2026, adding an H2 chip to its over-ear headphones and claiming noise cancellation is up to 1.5 times more effective than on the previous generation. The update also brings features such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation. The ANC figure is Apple’s comparison, not an independent test result.
What’s new in AirPods Max 2?
The central hardware change is an H2 chip in each ear cup. Apple says H2, together with new computational audio algorithms, enables stronger Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and the new intelligent features. AirPods Max 2 also has a new high dynamic range amplifier and an Apple-designed dynamic driver.
- Adaptive Audio: automatically adjusts ANC and Transparency to suit the listening environment.
- Conversation Awareness: lowers content volume and reduces background noise when you speak.
- Voice Isolation: helps prioritize your voice during calls.
- Live Translation: translates supported conversations, subject to device, software, language and regional requirements.
- Loud Sound Reduction and Personalized Volume: additional listening features Apple lists for the model.
- Camera remote: use the Digital Crown to control the Camera app or compatible apps on supported iPhone and iPad models.
- Studio-quality audio recording: a new creator-focused capability listed by Apple.
Feature availability is not universal. Several features require the latest firmware and compatible Apple devices running iOS, iPadOS or macOS 26.4 or later. Live Translation requires the latest firmware and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later; Apple lists it as a beta feature whose availability may vary by region and language. Camera remote requires compatible devices running iOS 26.4 or iPadOS 26.4 and later. Apple’s 16 March 2026 announcement describes the features, while Apple’s AirPods Max 2 specifications give compatibility qualifications.

How much better is the noise cancelling?
Apple says ANC is up to 1.5 times more effective than on the previous generation. The company attributes the improvement to H2 and new computational audio algorithms. “Up to” matters: it describes Apple’s maximum stated comparison, not a guaranteed improvement in every environment or a result independently measured in the available evidence. Apple has not supplied a full test protocol for that comparison.

Apple also says Transparency mode sounds more natural, crediting a new digital signal-processing algorithm optimized for H2 and the microphone array. Its other sound claims include improved instrument localization, bass response, mids and highs with Spatial Audio, and cleaner audio from the new amplifier. These are Apple’s product descriptions rather than independent listening-test findings.
Wired lossless audio is different from wireless listening
AirPods Max 2 supports 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio and ultra-low-latency audio over its included USB-C cable, when used with compatible content in supported apps and services. This is a wired capability; it should not be read as lossless audio over Bluetooth. The headphones also support Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless listening.

Apple’s battery figures come from tests using pre-production headphones and specified phone and software conditions. The company says actual battery life varies with settings, environment, usage and other factors, so the “up to” figure is not a guaranteed runtime for every listener. The specifications page provides Apple’s test details and caveats.
Price and launch timing
Apple’s UK release said orders would open on 25 March 2026 and availability would begin early the following month, with a UK starting price of £499. These are UK launch details, not a universal price or availability statement. Apple lists five colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple and orange. Compatibility and practical trade-offs
AirPods Max 2 can function as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited. Buyers considering the new smart features should check their device and software against Apple’s compatibility requirements; the H2 hardware alone does not ensure every feature is available on every phone or in every region.
For a meaningful comparison with another premium headphone, look beyond Apple’s maximum ANC claim. Compare independent ANC measurements made using the same test method, battery life under similar settings, wired versus wireless audio support, weight and comfort, device compatibility, and the price in your market. The published figures here do not establish how AirPods Max 2 performs against other brands in matched independent tests.
