Apple’s current over-ear headphones are AirPods Max 2, listed at $549 in the U.S. They offer active noise cancellation, several listening modes, and wired lossless audio over USB-C, but their 386.2 g weight, up-to-20-hour ANC battery estimate, and premium price are meaningful tradeoffs. These pros and cons apply to Max 2—not the earlier USB-C AirPods Max, which uses H1 chips rather than Max 2’s H2 chips.
What you get with AirPods Max 2
Apple’s current specifications describe AirPods Max 2 as Bluetooth 5.3 over-ear headphones with H2 chips in both ear cups. Apple also advertises up to 1.5 times more active noise cancellation than the original AirPods Max. That is Apple’s comparative claim, not an independent test result.
The feature set includes Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Adaptive EQ, and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Apple also lists Voice Isolation, Siri functions, and Live Translation. Some features depend on compatible Apple hardware, software, languages, and regions; Live Translation, for example, requires a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and is limited by language and regional availability. Check Apple’s current AirPods Max product listing for local availability and requirements.
AirPods Max 2 pros
Multiple listening modes for different situations
ANC is intended to reduce surrounding noise, while Transparency lets outside sound through. Adaptive Audio adjusts the balance between those modes, and Conversation Awareness responds when you speak. Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Adaptive EQ add further sound-processing options. The value of these features depends on whether you want that flexibility and use compatible devices and content.

Wired lossless audio over USB-C
AirPods Max 2 supports lossless and ultra-low-latency audio through a wired USB-C connection. This is a genuine option for listeners who want a cable-based connection, but it does not make Bluetooth playback lossless. Apple’s support details specify compatible content and apps or services as conditions for wired lossless listening. USB-C is also the charging connection.
Apple announced wired 24-bit/48 kHz lossless and ultra-low-latency support for USB-C AirPods Max in March 2025, and says that model received the capability through a firmware update. The announcement also described a USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio cable for connecting to a 3.5 mm source, such as an aircraft audio output. Apple quoted $39 in the U.S. for that cable in the March 2025 announcement; that is a historical announcement price, not a confirmed current price. See Apple’s March 2025 announcement for the cable and firmware details.

Apple-device integrations
Features such as Siri functions and Apple’s supported spatial-audio experience are most relevant to buyers already using compatible Apple devices. Live Translation may also be useful to some users, but it has specific iPhone, software, language, and region requirements; it is not a general translation feature guaranteed to work in every setup.

Fast-charge and battery claims
Apple estimates up to 20 hours of listening on a full charge with ANC enabled and says five minutes of charging can provide around 1.5 hours of listening. Treat these as Apple’s stated maximum and charging claims, not guaranteed results: usage, settings, and other conditions affect actual battery life. Apple lists the same up-to-20-hour ANC figure for the earlier USB-C AirPods Max.

AirPods Max 2 cons
Heavy for an over-ear headphone
Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 386.2 g (13.6 oz). RTINGS describes the headphones as heavy and bulky, and Macworld also identifies weight as a drawback. Comfort and fit vary by person, so the listed weight and reviews cannot predict how they will feel on your head; try them on if you can, especially if you plan to wear them for long sessions.
Battery life is not especially generous for the price
Apple’s stated maximum is up to 20 hours with ANC on. Macworld’s June 24, 2026 review says that figure trails named competitors it discusses. That is a review-date-specific comparison, not a claim that every competing model will last longer under every test or usage pattern.

Smart Case and power-management concerns
Apple says storing the headphones in the Smart Case preserves charge by placing them in an ultra-low-power state. Macworld criticizes the case and battery-management experience, including the lack of a deliberate way for users to turn the headphones off. Those are the reviewer’s practical criticisms; they should not be confused with Apple’s description of the case’s low-power function.
High U.S. list price
Apple’s U.S. listing is $549. That makes the decision harder if you do not need the Apple-specific features, wired USB-C lossless playback, or the particular combination of listening modes. The figure is Apple’s U.S. listing, not a price for every country or a guarantee of what another retailer charges.
Best Value
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Some headline features require a cable or compatible setup
Lossless and ultra-low-latency audio require wired USB-C and compatible content; they are not wireless Bluetooth benefits. Apple-device features also have compatibility and availability limits. Apple says the headphones can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but functionality may be limited, so do not assume that Android or Windows provides the full Apple feature set.

The generation matters when comparing listings or considering an upgrade. Apple identifies the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max as an H1-based model and AirPods Max 2 as H2-based. Both are listed at 386.2 g and up to 20 hours of ANC listening. The older model received wired lossless and ultra-low-latency support through a firmware update announced in March 2025, so those capabilities are not exclusive to Max 2. Apple’s current comparison claim of up to 1.5 times more ANC is relative to the original AirPods Max; it has not been independently quantified here.

- Consider them if you use Apple devices, want the combination of ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and spatial-audio features, and are comfortable with their weight and price.
- Consider them cautiously if you expect long stretches between charges or are sensitive to heavier over-ear headphones. Apple’s estimate and reviewers’ assessments give you useful context, but neither can settle personal comfort or your real-world battery needs.
- Look elsewhere or compare carefully if your priorities are wireless lossless playback, long battery life, a lower price, or full feature parity on Android or Windows. AirPods Max 2’s lossless mode requires a wired USB-C connection.
- Check the model name before buying if a listing simply says “USB-C AirPods Max.” The 2024 USB-C model and AirPods Max 2 differ in chip generation, even though Apple lists the same weight and ANC battery estimate for both.
