AirPods 5 are worth considering if you use Apple devices, prefer an open fit without silicone tips, and want some noise reduction—not full isolation. Both configurations include active noise cancellation (ANC). At their U.S. launch prices, the $149 Wireless Charging Case model adds useful controls and charging options for $20 more, while the $129 standard model is the simpler value pick. Their main drawbacks are modest rated battery life and an open design that lets some sounds through.
Who should buy AirPods 5?
Choose AirPods 5 if conventional silicone ear tips feel uncomfortable, you like an open fit, and you want ANC to reduce some surrounding noise while retaining awareness of your environment. The open design is also a reason to try them before buying: comfort and stability depend on your ears.
Look elsewhere if your priority is a quiet commute, strong isolation, or long uninterrupted listening sessions. An open earbud does not form the passive seal of a silicone-tip model, and reviewers found that voices or announcements could remain audible with ANC on. Tom’s Guide described ANC as useful but less isolating than silicone-tip earbuds; T3 reported that train announcements remained audible in its example. What do the two AirPods 5 configurations cost, and what changes?
Apple announced the products on September 9, 2026, and U.S. store availability began September 18. The figures below are U.S. launch prices, not a guarantee of current pricing. Apple’s announcement describes the configurations.

Apple rates both figures as maximums; actual battery life varies with settings and use. With noise control off, Apple lists up to 6 hours for the standard configuration and up to 7 hours for the Wireless Charging Case model. Apple’s AirPods 5 specifications provide the battery and feature details.
The $20 launch-price difference buys case and control conveniences plus one additional rated hour of ANC playback. Apple does not list sound quality or ANC as differences between the configurations. Pick the standard model if you do not need those extras; pay more if wireless charging, stem volume control, or the case speaker is useful to you.

How good is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
ANC can reduce noise, but it cannot make an open-fit earbud behave like a sealed one. Without silicone tips closing off the ear canal, external sound can still reach you. Tom’s Guide reported some higher-frequency sounds and indistinct conversation during its test, while T3’s train example left announcements audible.
Apple says AirPods 5 provide up to 50% more external noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s product claim, not an independent measurement: Apple says the comparison was based on testing conducted in July 2026 under IEC 60268-24 against the bestselling commercially available wireless open-ear headphones at the time. The claim does not mean AirPods 5 deliver the isolation of sealed earbuds. Apple’s announcement and testing note give the comparison context.

Is the battery life enough?
Apple’s maximum ratings are up to four hours of ANC listening per charge for AirPods 5 and up to five hours for the Wireless Charging Case configuration. Those are short sessions compared with what buyers seeking all-day, uninterrupted listening may want, so the charging case matters if you plan to listen across a long day.
One T3 review unit of the Wireless Charging Case model lasted about four and a half hours of continuous ANC listening before reaching 12% battery. That is a single reviewer’s test, not a dependable prediction for every unit or listening pattern. T3’s test describes the conditions it observed.

Are AirPods 5 a good choice for non-Apple devices?
AirPods 5 use Bluetooth 5.3 and can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited. For full functionality, Apple specifies an Apple device running current operating-system software. If you rely on features beyond basic headphone playback, check compatibility for your devices before buying. Apple’s specifications state the Bluetooth and compatibility details.

Should you upgrade from AirPods 4?
An upgrade is most compelling if ANC is the feature you want and you prefer to keep an open-fit design. Apple’s stated noise-reduction improvement is a comparison made under its specified test conditions; it does not remove the basic trade-off between an open fit and the stronger passive seal of silicone tips.

If your current AirPods 4 meet your needs, the case upgrade alone is not a reason to replace them. Consider AirPods 5 when their ANC, fit, or configuration-specific features address a problem you actually have—and weigh the four- or five-hour ANC rating against your typical listening sessions.

- Fit: The design has no silicone tips or passive ear-canal seal. Try them if possible, especially if fit is a concern.
- Water and dust: T3 reports an IP57 rating for the Wireless Charging Case model. Confirm the rating and its scope in the product details for the exact configuration and region before relying on it.
- Materials: Apple reports 40% recycled material overall, including 70% recycled plastic in the Wireless Charging Case and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. Apple also reports that manufacturing uses 35% renewable energy. These are company-reported figures, not independent assessments. Apple’s announcement provides them.
