The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) reduce some everyday noise without silicone ear tips sealing your ear canal. That makes them worth considering if sealed earbuds feel uncomfortable or too plugged-up—but their open fit limits isolation, and their noise cancelling is not a substitute for the stronger isolation of a well-fitting sealed earbud.
What the open fit feels like—and what it costs you
AirPods 4 ANC sit in the ear without silicone tips forming a tight seal. For listeners who dislike the pressure or plugged-ear sensation of sealed earbuds, that can be the point. It also means the fit depends heavily on your individual ears: comfort and how securely the buds stay in place can vary. Independent reviewers reported differing comfort and retention experiences rather than a fit that works equally well for everyone. SoundGuys and RTINGS both discuss the open design and its fit trade-offs.
The same design limits passive noise isolation. ANC can reduce some sound, but it cannot make an unsealed earbud behave like a sealed one. If your priority is blocking noise as completely as possible, or you need a tip-based fit that feels more secure, RTINGS points to sealed models such as AirPods Pro as the better direction.

How effective is the noise cancelling?
The hybrid ANC is useful, but expect a partial reduction in noise rather than silence. SoundGuys found it reduced some mid- and high-frequency sound while low-frequency noise could remain; its measurements reported about 20 dB of cancellation in the mid and high frequencies. That figure is SoundGuys’ outlet-specific measurement, not an Apple rating or a promise of the same result in every ear. SoundGuys’ review describes the overall effect as middling, while RTINGS’ review notes that sealed in-ear alternatives isolate better.

In practical terms, ANC is a welcome extra for someone who wants an open fit and some reduction in surrounding noise. It is a weaker match if your main goal is to shut out steady low rumbles, loud environments, or conversation. Individual fit matters too: because the buds do not seal, your experience may differ from a reviewer’s measurements.
AirPods 4 ANC versus standard AirPods 4 and sealed earbuds
The choice is less about a single “best” earbud than about fit and priorities. The standard AirPods 4 share the open-fit approach; the ANC version adds listening and case features. A sealed model trades the open sensation for a tip-based seal that can improve isolation and fit stability.

Apple rates AirPods 4 ANC for up to 4 hours of listening on one charge with ANC enabled, and up to 20 hours total when using the case. With noise control off, Apple’s figures are up to 5 hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case. Apple also says a five-minute case charge provides around one hour of listening. These are maximum claims under Apple’s specified test conditions, not guaranteed everyday runtimes.

Apple’s battery testing took place in July and August 2024 using pre-production AirPods and iPhone 16 Pro Max units, pre-release software, 50% volume, and a 358-track AAC playlist. The listening-mode details are part of Apple’s published test conditions. Apple cautions: “Battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage and many other factors.” See Apple’s specifications for the full details.
SoundGuys measured 6 hours 21 minutes in its single-charge test with both noise cancellation and Transparency off. That independent result is not an ANC-on measurement and should not be compared directly with Apple’s four-hour ANC-on rating. Features, charging and device compatibility
The ANC model’s additional features include Adaptive Audio, which adjusts between listening modes, and Conversation Awareness, which responds when you start speaking. Its case has a speaker to help locate it with Find My and supports wireless charging. Apple lists USB-C, an Apple Watch charger, and a Qi-certified wireless charger as charging options; the USB-C cable is sold separately. AirPods 4 ANC use Bluetooth 5.3 and can function as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, though Apple says functionality may be limited. Apple-device integration is a substantial part of the appeal, and SoundGuys reports that features are reduced when using non-Apple source devices. If you use Android or another non-Apple device, pairing is possible; do not assume every Apple-specific feature will be available. Durability and water resistance
