To reset your Apple Account password, use a trusted device that’s already signed in if you can: on iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security > Change Password, enter the device passcode, and follow the prompts. If you don’t have that device, try Apple’s Support app on a borrowed device or iforgot.apple.com. If Apple can’t verify you through those routes, account recovery may take several days or longer.
Apple now calls an Apple ID an Apple Account; the associated email address or phone number and password still work for sign-in. This guide covers both common questions—“How do I reset my Apple Account password?” and “How do I reset my iCloud password?”—because iCloud sign-in uses the password for your Apple Account.
Reset the password on a trusted device
A trusted device is one already signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication. If you can use one, this is usually the most direct route and can avoid account recovery.

Reset your password without a trusted device
If no trusted device is available, first consider whether you can regain access to one or to your trusted phone number soon; Apple says that may be quicker than beginning recovery. Otherwise, try one of these routes:
Use the Apple Support app on a borrowed device
- Open the Apple Support app on the borrowed iPhone or iPad.
- Choose Support Tools > Reset Password > Help Someone Else.
- Enter the account details and follow Apple’s identity-verification steps.
Apple says information entered in this process is not stored on the borrowed device. Use the app’s prompts rather than saving account details there.
Use Apple’s password-reset website
Go to iforgot.apple.com and follow the instructions for your account. When possible, Apple may direct you to a trusted device to complete the reset.

Complete the verification options Apple offers
The identity checks depend on the account and recovery settings. Apple may offer verification using a trusted phone number, recovery contact, account email address, associated credit card, recovery key, or security key. You may not see every option; use only the methods Apple presents for your account.
What to expect if Apple starts account recovery
Account recovery is a fallback for when Apple cannot verify your identity through the available options. Apple says the wait may be several days or longer and that contacting Apple Support cannot shorten it. There is no fixed completion time to rely on.
- Follow the instructions Apple gives for the method you used to start recovery.
- If you started recovery on the web, Apple’s guidance says to turn off your Apple devices during the wait.
- Signing in or using a device that is already signed in to the account may cancel the recovery request.
If you remember the password or regain access to a signed-in device, check Apple’s instructions before using it: activity on that device can affect a pending request.

Recovery contact or recovery key: know the difference
These are different recovery options, and neither should be confused with your password.

- Recovery contact: A person you have designated can provide a six-digit recovery code to help you regain access. The contact does not get access to your account. Apple allows up to five recovery contacts.
- Recovery key: An optional 28-character code that you must keep safe. Turning on a recovery key disables standard account recovery. Apple says it cannot provide a replacement if you lose the key, so losing it can leave you permanently locked out.
If you think someone else has access to your account
Do not treat an unexpected two-factor authentication code as an instruction to reset your password or share the code with anyone. Unrequested codes, unfamiliar devices or account changes, and a password that suddenly stops working can be signs of compromise.
- Change your Apple Account password using a trusted device if you can.
- Review your personal information and security settings, and remove devices you do not recognize.
- Check that you still control the email addresses and phone numbers associated with the account.
If you cannot sign in to make those changes, use Apple’s recovery process rather than responding to an unexpected message or request for a verification code.
