Apple’s confirmed U.S. iPad lineup in 2026 consists of four families: the $349 iPad with A16, the $499 iPad mini with A17 Pro, the $599 11-inch iPad Air with M4, and the $999 11-inch iPad Pro with M5. The 13-inch Air starts at $799 and the 13-inch Pro at $1,299. Only the iPad Air was refreshed in 2026; the current iPad mini, base iPad, and iPad Pro are earlier models that remain on sale.

As of August 12, 2026, Apple’s U.S. iPad lineup has four families: iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro. The current models range from the $349 iPad (A16) to the $1,299 13-inch iPad Pro (M5), before tax, storage upgrades, cellular connectivity, promotions, or optional display glass. Apple’s current U.S. iPad shopping page is the best place to verify live prices before ordering.

The important context is that only the iPad Air was refreshed in 2026. Apple announced the M4 iPad Air on March 2, 2026, and made it available March 11. The M5 iPad Pro, A17 Pro iPad mini, and A16 iPad are older introductions that remain the current products in 2026—not four separate 2026 launches.

Detailed comparison of the 2026 iPads

iPad (A16): the affordable general-purpose choice

The standard iPad (A16) is the practical choice for browsing, streaming, communications, schoolwork, note-taking, casual games, and ordinary productivity. It is not the cheapest iPad in an older-generation sense; it is the current entry-level model Apple sells in 2026.

  • Display: 11-inch-class Liquid Retina IPS, 2360 by 1640 pixels, 264 pixels per inch, True Tone, and up to 500 nits brightness.
  • Storage and finishes: 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB in silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
  • Cameras: 12MP rear Wide camera with 4K video recording and a landscape 12MP Center Stage front camera.
  • Ports and security: USB-C and Touch ID.
  • Stylus support: Apple Pencil USB-C and first-generation Apple Pencil. The first-generation Pencil requires a USB-C adapter for pairing and charging.
  • Keyboard support: Magic Keyboard Folio, rather than the Magic Keyboard models designed for the Air and Pro.

The A16 iPad’s major forward-looking limitation is Apple Intelligence. Apple does not list this model as Apple Intelligence-enabled in the current comparison material, while the A17 Pro mini, M4 Air, and M5 Pro are supported. If Apple Intelligence is a deciding feature, do not choose the base iPad solely because it is the least expensive option.

The 128GB model is the sensible starting point for basic schoolwork, web use, video streaming, and cloud-based documents. Consider 256GB or 512GB if the iPad will hold substantial downloaded video, games, photos, or offline work; the current U.S. Wi-Fi prices are $349 for 128GB, $449 for 256GB, and $649 for 512GB.

iPad mini (A17 Pro): the portability specialist

The iPad mini with A17 Pro remains Apple’s smallest tablet. Its 8.3-inch screen makes it easier to carry and hold than every larger iPad, but also gives it less room for split-screen work, large canvases, and a full-size keyboard setup.

  • Display: 8.3-inch Liquid Retina, 2266 by 1488 pixels at 326 pixels per inch, with P3 wide color, True Tone, full lamination, antireflective coating, 500 nits brightness, and Apple Pencil hover.
  • Weight: 293 grams in the Wi-Fi configuration.
  • Storage and finishes: 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB in blue, purple, starlight, and space gray.
  • Connectivity: USB-C, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. Cellular versions support 5G and use eSIM rather than a physical SIM card.
  • Cameras and security: 12MP rear camera with 4K video, landscape 12MP Center Stage camera, and Touch ID.
  • Stylus support: Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C.

The mini is the best fit when physical size matters more than workspace. It works particularly well as a travel reader, note-taking tablet, portable gaming screen, navigation or reference device, and compact digital sketchbook. It is less convincing as a laptop replacement if you regularly need several large apps visible at once.

U.S. Wi-Fi pricing is $499 for 128GB, $599 for 256GB, and $799 for 512GB. Cellular versions start at $649.

iPad Air (M4): the lineup’s likely value sweet spot

The 2026 iPad Air with M4 is the only iPad family refreshed during 2026. It is available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes and provides the strongest middle ground between the base iPad and the Pro.

Apple says the M4 Air is up to 30 percent faster than the previous M3 iPad Air and up to 2.3 times faster than the M1 iPad Air. Those are Apple’s controlled performance claims, not independent test results, so they should be treated as positioning rather than a guarantee of a particular real-world speed increase.

  • Chip: M4 with an 8-core CPU, 9-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, 120GB/s memory bandwidth, and 12GB of unified memory.
  • 11-inch display: 2360 by 1640 pixels at 264 pixels per inch; 464 grams for Wi-Fi.
  • 13-inch display: 2732 by 2048 pixels at 264 pixels per inch, up to 600 nits brightness; 616 grams for Wi-Fi.
  • Display technology: Liquid Retina IPS with P3 wide color, True Tone, full lamination, antireflective coating, and Apple Pencil hover.
  • Accessories: Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil USB-C, and Magic Keyboard for iPad Air.
  • Expansion: USB 3 over USB-C, up to 10Gb/s, and support for one external display up to 6K at 60Hz.
  • Wireless hardware: Apple’s N1 networking chip. Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking; Wi-Fi 7 and cellular availability vary by country and carrier.
  • Cellular models: Apple’s C1X modem, with cellular configurations starting at $749 for 11-inch and $949 for 13-inch.

The 11-inch Air is the more portable productivity model. The 13-inch Air is better if you want a larger canvas for documents, multitasking, music projects, spreadsheets, or drawing without paying Pro prices.

The Air supports Apple Intelligence and Apple Pencil Pro, but it does not have the Pro’s Tandem OLED display or ProMotion adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. That difference is central to the buying decision: the Air supplies plenty of performance and a modern accessory system, while the Pro charges more for display technology, connectivity, and higher-end configurations.

Apple’s starting prices are $599 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model and $799 for the 13-inch Wi-Fi model. The Magic Keyboard for the 2026 iPad Air is listed at $269 for 11-inch and $319 for 13-inch, so include the keyboard cost if the tablet is intended to replace a laptop-style setup.

iPad Pro (M5): the premium display and pro-connection option

The current iPad Pro with M5 is available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, with silver or space black finishes and 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB storage. It is the most capable and expensive iPad family, but its advantages are specific rather than necessary for every user.

  • Chip and memory: The 11-inch 256GB configuration uses a 9-core CPU/10-core GPU M5 configuration with 12GB of memory. Higher-capacity configurations move to a 10-core CPU/10-core GPU design with 16GB of memory.
  • Display: Ultra Retina XDR Tandem OLED with ProMotion adaptive refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz, P3 wide color, True Tone, antireflective coating, and Apple Pencil hover.
  • Brightness and contrast: Up to 1,000 nits full-screen SDR/XDR brightness, 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, 1 nit minimum brightness, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • Optional glass: Nano-texture display glass is available on 1TB and 2TB configurations.
  • Cameras and security: 12MP rear camera, landscape 12MP Center Stage camera, and Face ID.
  • Audio: Four-speaker audio and a five-microphone studio-quality array.
  • Connectivity: Thunderbolt/USB 4, making the Pro the strongest choice in this lineup for fast external storage, docks, displays, and other high-bandwidth professional accessories.
  • Accessories: Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil USB-C, and Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro.

The Pro’s Tandem OLED screen is the clearest reason to buy it. HDR video editors, photographers, illustrators, people who work in very dark or bright visual content, and users who value smooth 120Hz interaction can make meaningful use of it. M5 performance, up to 2TB of storage, Face ID, and Thunderbolt are additional reasons for demanding workflows.

The Air usually delivers the more economical balance unless you specifically need the OLED/HDR display, ProMotion, Thunderbolt, advanced camera and audio hardware, or maximum storage.

Which iPad should you buy in 2026?

Choose the iPad A16 if price matters most

Buy the standard iPad if you want the least expensive current model for common tablet tasks and do not need Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro, a larger storage tier beyond 512GB, or the Air and Pro keyboard systems. It is the rational choice for many students, families, streaming setups, and basic home or office use.

Choose the iPad mini if portability matters most

Choose the mini if you will carry the tablet constantly, read for long periods, take handwritten notes while moving around, travel frequently, or prefer a compact gaming and media device. Its A17 Pro chip also keeps it in Apple’s Apple Intelligence-supported group. Do not choose it expecting the workspace of an 11-inch or 13-inch tablet.

Choose the 11-inch iPad Air for the best all-round balance

The 11-inch M4 Air is the most broadly appealing option for people who want a fast, current iPad with Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro support, a proper keyboard accessory, USB 3, and a manageable size. It is the strongest default recommendation when the base iPad feels limiting but the Pro’s OLED display and Thunderbolt features are unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the 13-inch iPad Air for more workspace without going Pro

The 13-inch Air makes sense when screen area is more valuable than compactness: large documents, split-screen work, illustration, spreadsheets, presentations, and keyboard-based productivity all benefit from the larger panel. It costs $200 more than the 11-inch Air at the starting Wi-Fi level, before accessories.

Choose the iPad Pro when you can name the premium feature you need

The Pro is justified when your work benefits from Tandem OLED HDR, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Thunderbolt/USB 4, Face ID, the advanced camera and microphone system, up to 2TB of storage, or the M5 configuration. If you cannot identify one of those needs, compare the Air’s total cost before paying for the Pro.

Apple Pencil, keyboard, and accessory compatibility

Accessory compatibility is not interchangeable across the lineup. A case or keyboard designed for one size or generation may not fit another iPad, even if both products are called an iPad Air or iPad Pro.

Apple Pencil choices

Apple Pencil Pro is the premium stylus for the iPad Air M4, iPad mini A17 Pro, and iPad Pro M5. Apple lists its U.S. price at $129. It is the appropriate choice for pressure-sensitive drawing, handwritten notes, and illustration on those three families; it is not compatible with the base A16 iPad.

Apple Pencil USB-C works across all four current iPad families. The A16 iPad additionally supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, but that older Pencil needs a USB-C adapter for pairing and charging. Check the exact Pencil model before adding it to a cart.

Keyboards and cases

The A16 iPad uses Magic Keyboard Folio. The Air uses the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, and the Pro uses the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. The 11-inch and 13-inch versions are separate products, so shoppers should look for an 11-inch iPad case, iPad mini case, 13-inch iPad Air case, or iPad Pro M5 folio that names the exact family, size, and generation.

Hubs, docks, storage, and charging

The Air’s USB 3 port can reach up to 10Gb/s and drive one external display up to 6K at 60Hz. The Pro’s Thunderbolt/USB 4 port is the better match for high-bandwidth external storage, docks, and professional displays. When shopping for a USB-C hub for iPad Air or a Thunderbolt dock for iPad Pro, verify USB speed, display output, power delivery, and exact iPad compatibility rather than assuming every USB-C hub offers the same features.

All four families charge through USB-C. A USB-C charger for iPad or extra cable is a practical travel or replacement purchase, but the charger and cable should be selected for the intended setup; this comparison does not establish a maximum charging speed for every model.

Should you buy cellular?

Cellular pricing begins at $499 for the A16 iPad, $649 for the mini, $749 for the 11-inch Air, $949 for the 13-inch Air, $1,199 for the 11-inch Pro, and $1,499 for the 13-inch Pro. Cellular is most useful if the iPad will routinely work away from reliable Wi-Fi and you want built-in mobile connectivity rather than tethering to a phone.

For occasional travel, Wi-Fi plus phone hotspot may be sufficient. For a device used on commutes, at job sites, in classrooms without dependable Wi-Fi, or as a regularly connected navigation and communications tool, the extra cellular cost may be easier to justify. Carrier support, eSIM requirements, and wireless bands vary by model, country, and carrier; confirm those details before purchase.

What is actually new in the 2026 lineup?

The confirmed 2026 refresh is the M4 iPad Air. Apple has not announced a 2026 iPad mini refresh or a new entry-level iPad in the official sources reviewed. The current mini remains the A17 Pro model introduced in 2024, and the current base iPad remains the A16 model introduced in 2025. The M5 iPad Pro was introduced before 2026 and remains the current Pro.

Rumors about future OLED screens, redesigned iPad mini hardware, or later entry-level models should not be treated as products in the confirmed 2026 lineup. If a future release is important to your decision, wait for an official Apple announcement rather than paying a premium or delaying a purchase based only on speculation.

2026 iPad buying checklist

  1. Set the real budget: Include storage, cellular service, Pencil, keyboard, case, and any dock or external storage.
  2. Pick the working size: Choose the mini for portability, 11 inches for balance, or 13 inches for workspace.
  3. Decide whether Apple Intelligence matters: The A16 base iPad is the outlier; the A17 Pro mini, M4 Air, and M5 Pro are supported.
  4. Choose the display deliberately: The Air has a laminated IPS display; the Pro adds Tandem OLED, HDR brightness, and 10Hz–120Hz ProMotion.
  5. Match the accessory: Confirm Pencil, keyboard, case, and screen-protector compatibility by exact model and size.
  6. Check connectivity: Choose cellular only when built-in mobile data is worth the added price. Choose the Pro if Thunderbolt/USB 4 is a real requirement.
  7. Recheck Apple’s live listing: Prices and availability can change after this August 12, 2026 snapshot.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The M4 iPad Air is the strongest all-around 2026 choice for most buyers, with the 11-inch model favoring portability and the 13-inch model favoring workspace. Buy the A16 iPad for the lowest price, the A17 Pro mini for maximum portability, and the M5 Pro only when its Tandem OLED display, ProMotion, Thunderbolt, advanced hardware, or high storage capacity directly matches your work.
