To find a mobile UI element in Appium, call your client’s WebDriver element-finding method with a locator strategy and selector during an active Appium session. Which strategies work depends on the driver handling that session, so check that driver’s documentation before using a locator in a test. Here’s an official example for Python on Android with UiAutomator2.
How Appium finds an element
Your client sends a WebDriver command to find one or more elements in the current session. Appium routes most WebDriver endpoints to the active driver, which implements them. That means a locator is interpreted in the context of the driver—not by one universal Appium locator engine.
A driver may support only some standard WebDriver locator strategies, or it may add custom ones. If a request uses a strategy the driver does not allow, it can be rejected. Check the locator-strategy reference for the driver and version your test actually uses before copying an example.
Python example: Android with UiAutomator2 and XPath
The Appium Python quickstart sets up an Android session using UiAutomator2Options and automationName='uiautomator2'. In that session, it finds the Settings screen’s “Apps” element and clicks it:

el.click()This is a locator call for an already established Python Appium session; it is not a complete session-setup script. The selector uses XPath, and the example is specifically for Android with UiAutomator2. It does not establish that XPath is fastest, most stable, or the right choice for every app or platform.
The Appium Python Client inherits from Selenium’s Python binding. Appium Documentation’s “Write a Test (Python)” page, dated 2025-09-04, states: “The Appium Python client adds the appium: vendor prefix automatically.”

Choose a locator for your driver and app
- Start with the test setup. Identify the platform, Appium driver, and driver version used by the session.
- Check the driver’s locator reference. Confirm that it accepts the strategy you intend to use; do not assume support carries over to another driver.
- Choose a selector that identifies the intended element. Consider how directly it points to the target and whether it is likely to survive relevant UI changes.
- Measure lookup time in your own setup if speed matters. The official example does not provide a speed comparison, and there is no universal ranking established here.
Those checks help keep a working example in its proper scope: the Android UiAutomator2 XPath call above is not automatically an iOS recipe.
Find one match or collect several
WebDriver defines both findElement and findElements, as well as element-scoped lookup endpoints. In Python, the corresponding client methods include find_element and find_elements. Use the single-element method when the test needs one match; use the plural method when it needs a collection. The driver still determines whether the requested strategy is accepted.

# Python client: Android / UiAutomator2 session, using the same XPath strategy
apps = self.driver.find_elements(by=AppiumBy.XPATH, value='//*[@text="Apps"]')This collects matches rather than clicking one. The example selector is the same quickstart XPath; it does not prescribe what your test should do if the collection is empty or contains more than one element.
Troubleshoot locator failures
- The driver rejects the locator strategy: Check the active driver’s allowed strategies and use one it supports. A strategy accepted by a different driver may not be accepted here.
- The example does not work on your platform: Verify that your session matches the example. The cited call is for Python, Android, UiAutomator2, and XPath; it is not evidence for iOS.
- The client call is not recognized: Confirm that the Appium client exposes the WebDriver element-finding method you are using, and that your code is using the correct client-language syntax.
- You are unsure whether to use a single or plural lookup: Choose based on whether the test needs one element or a collection, and account for the result handling your test requires.
- You need to compare lookup speed or resilience: Measure with your app, driver, and test conditions. The cited sources do not establish a universal fastest or most maintainable strategy.
