There is no universal winner. ApiFlash is the better starting point if you need WebP, JSON responses, documented Chrome-based rendering, or flexible capture timing. Screenshot Machine is a stronger fit when device presets, click and selector controls, zoom, or a separate web-to-PDF API matter most. Both offer free and paid plans; the right choice depends on your required outputs and the number of fresh screenshots you expect to capture.
This is a comparison of documented features and vendor-published prices, not a side-by-side performance test. For a third option, ScreenshotNeo stands out for removing consent banners and other overlays before capture and billing only clean shots.
ApiFlash vs ScreenshotMachine at a glance
Both services turn a URL into an image through a hosted API. The largest practical differences are output formats, capture controls, PDF support, quota definitions, and price currency. The values below are vendor-published plan snapshots checked on September 29, 2026; prices and included usage can change.
| Decision point | ApiFlash | Screenshot Machine |
|---|---|---|
| Integration | HTTPS API supports GET and POST; access key authentication. | GET API using a customer key; vendor provides code samples. |
| Image formats | JPEG, PNG, WebP. | JPG, PNG, GIF. |
| Capture controls | Responsive viewports, full-page capture, automatic timing, JavaScript injection; vendor describes current Chrome rendering. | Desktop, phone, and tablet modes; dimensions, delay, zoom, click, and CSS selector capture. |
| Other output | JSON response can provide screenshot and extracted-content links. | Separate web-to-PDF API with paper size, orientation, print media, background, delay, and scale options. |
| Free plan | 100 screenshots monthly. | 100 fresh screenshots monthly. |
| Published paid entry plan | Lite: $7/month for 1,000 screenshots. | Basic: €9/month for 2,500 fresh screenshots. |
| Cache and failed captures | Vendor FAQ says identical-parameter cached and failed screenshots do not count; API includes a cache TTL setting. | Pricing FAQ says only new, fresh screenshots are billed; cached captures are available for 14 days. |
| Published technical limit | Docs state a leaky-bucket rate of 20 requests/second with a burst of 400; excess requests may be delayed or return 429 after the burst limit. | Docs state a maximum width of 1,920 pixels and height up to 9,999 pixels or full page. |
For a broader option set, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: its clean-shot workflow removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, and failed or unclean captures are not billed.
When ApiFlash is the better fit
You need WebP or a JSON response
ApiFlash lists WebP alongside JPEG and PNG. That makes it a natural first evaluation when your storage or delivery pipeline uses WebP and you do not want to convert screenshots elsewhere. Its JSON response option can return screenshot and extracted-content links, which may suit workflows that consume metadata or links programmatically rather than handling only a raw image response.

Your workload benefits from its documented timing and rate behavior
ApiFlash documents automatic capture timing, full-page capture, responsive viewports, and JavaScript injection. Those controls may help with pages whose visible content depends on client-side rendering. Its documentation describes a leaky-bucket limit of 20 requests per second and a burst allowance of 400; excess traffic is delayed, and requests beyond the burst can receive HTTP 429. Confirm how your account plan applies before designing around these limits.
You want the simpler published entry price in USD
ApiFlash lists the Free plan at $0 for 100 screenshots, Lite at $7/month for 1,000, Medium at $35/month for 10,000, and Large at $180/month for 100,000; it also lists custom Enterprise. Its API documentation and FAQ say failed and identical-parameter cached screenshots do not count, though actual usage still depends on your parameters and cache behavior.
When Screenshot Machine is the better fit
Device modes and direct capture interactions matter
Screenshot Machine documents desktop, phone, and tablet modes as well as delay, zoom, click, and CSS selector capture. These options are useful to evaluate when a workflow must capture a specific element, trigger an interaction first, or approximate a particular device class without building those steps into a separate browser automation system. Its width limit is documented as 1,920 pixels, with height up to 9,999 pixels or full page; check that against the target sites and layout you need.

You need PDF rather than an image alone
Screenshot Machine offers a separate website-to-PDF API. Its documented controls include paper size, orientation, print media, background, delay, and scale. Treat PDF generation as a distinct endpoint and validate pagination, print styles, and backgrounds with representative pages; image capture settings do not by themselves establish how a PDF will render.
You expect enough fresh captures to use its quota tiers
Screenshot Machine lists Starter free for 100 fresh screenshots monthly, Basic at €9/month for 2,500, Pro at €59/month for 20,000, and Enterprise at €99/month for 50,000. The pricing page describes additional screenshot billing in groups of 1,000 rounded down. It says cached captures are available for 14 days and only new, fresh screenshots are billed. VAT may apply to non-business EU customers.
Compare cost by fresh captures, not sticker price
The headline plan prices are not directly comparable: ApiFlash prices are displayed in US dollars, while Screenshot Machine’s are in euros. Quota wording also differs. Estimate how many genuinely new captures your workflow will produce, whether repeated requests can use cache, and what happens when you exceed an included allowance. Convert to your billing currency and verify the current checkout terms before committing.

The safest budget estimate comes from a representative sample of your own URL set. Count new pages and changed pages separately from repeated requests, then include peak traffic and any overage behavior. Published quotas do not establish what a particular site will cost if your cache hit rate or workload changes.
How to choose: run a small proof of concept
- Choose representative pages. Include static pages, JavaScript-heavy pages, long pages with lazy-loaded images, and any pages requiring authentication or unusual viewport sizes.
- Define the output contract. Record whether your application requires WebP, GIF, JPEG/JPG, PNG, JSON links, or PDF. A technically successful capture in the wrong format is still a failure for the integration.
- Exercise the controls you need. Test timing, full-page capture, device mode, zoom, clicks, and selector targeting only where your real workflow uses them. Confirm that plan availability covers those features.
- Measure your own results. Compare visual completeness, response behavior, dimensions, and processing time on the same URLs and settings. The vendor feature lists do not establish comparative real-world rendering accuracy, latency, or reliability.
- Model fresh usage and errors. Track cache hits, failed loads, retries, and projected peak requests. For ApiFlash, account for the documented rate behavior; for Screenshot Machine, verify current overage and plan rules.
- Recheck terms before launch. Confirm current prices, included quotas, limits, and feature availability directly on each provider’s plan and documentation pages.
Reliability, speed, and what the documentation cannot tell you
The reviewed vendor materials do not establish that either provider is faster or more reliable than the other in real-world conditions. ApiFlash’s FAQ says it does not publicly display uptime statistics. Screenshot Machine’s pricing page lists a 99.99% Uptime SLA on its plans; that is a vendor-stated contractual offer, not a comparative uptime measurement. Review the current SLA terms and remedy provisions rather than treating the percentage as proof of better rendering or availability.
Likewise, vendor descriptions of Chrome rendering, device modes, or automatic timing are not independent validation that a particular website will render accurately. Dynamic content, bot defenses, cookies, geography, and page changes can all affect a capture. Test the exact pages and states your application depends on.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits
ScreenshotNeo is another screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its distinguishing feature is cleaning the page before capture: it accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response indicating the page verdict and billing status in headers.
It also provides MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include Free with 1,000 shots/month and no card; Starter $5 for 3,000; Growth $15 for 15,000; Pro $39 for 60,000; Scale $99 for 250,000; and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan.

For a direct HTTP capture, send a GET request with your API key and target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. The MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Free includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Common problems to check before switching
Captures are missing content or show an incomplete page
- Check whether the page needs more time for client-side rendering or lazy-loaded assets; test the provider’s documented timing and full-page controls.
- Verify that the requested viewport and dimensions match the page layout. Screenshot Machine documents a 1,920-pixel maximum width.
- Test pages behind authentication, cookie state, or bot checks in the actual account and environment you intend to use. Do not assume a vendor’s general rendering description guarantees access to every target.
Requests are rejected or delayed
- For ApiFlash, inspect response status and your request rate. Documentation describes 20 requests/second with a burst of 400; excess may be delayed and requests beyond the burst may receive 429.
- Check credentials, URL encoding, HTTP method, and account quota. ApiFlash supports GET and POST; Screenshot Machine documents GET with a customer key.
- Retry transient failures with backoff rather than sending an immediate storm of identical requests, and avoid retry loops that can amplify load or spend.
The bill differs from a raw request count
- Separate fresh captures from cached results and failed attempts according to the provider’s stated billing rules.
- For Screenshot Machine, check whether the 14-day cache and 1,000-shot overage grouping apply to your account and current plan.
- For ApiFlash, verify identical-parameter cache behavior and the configured cache TTL against your request parameters.
The capture works but the integration still fails
- Confirm the response content type and handle both image data and JSON responses if using ApiFlash’s JSON option.
- Check whether the requested output is supported: ApiFlash lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP; Screenshot Machine lists JPG, PNG, and GIF.
- For PDF workflows, use Screenshot Machine’s separate web-to-PDF API and verify paper, orientation, print media, background, delay, and scale settings independently.
