Use API monitoring to verify that endpoints and service-level transactions return the right results, and end-to-end synthetic monitoring to test whether a representative user can complete a critical task. For most critical services, the best answer is both: outside-in checks detect failures, while distributed traces help explain what happened inside the system.

What API monitoring and end-to-end monitoring mean

API monitoring

API monitoring sends requests to an endpoint or a sequence of endpoints and checks the results over time. A basic check can confirm reachability, response status, and latency. More advanced scripted checks can validate response bodies, authentication, certificates, and state carried between requests. A successful ping is useful availability evidence, but it does not prove that a feature or application workflow works correctly. New Relic’s synthetic-monitoring documentation describes these monitor types and capabilities.

End-to-end synthetic monitoring

End-to-end synthetic monitoring runs a scripted journey from a selected location to test a user-facing task, often through a browser. A journey might attempt a login, search, or checkout. It tests a representative path rather than recording every real person’s activity. Browser checks can reveal problems that an API check misses, such as a broken interface or an interaction that prevents task completion. New Relic documents both API and browser monitors.

Tracing and real-user monitoring are different layers

Distributed tracing is not another kind of synthetic check. It follows a request through instrumented services, showing how work is related across a trace’s root and child spans. Traces help investigate a failure; they do not establish that a user-facing journey is usable. OpenTelemetry’s observability primer explains traces, spans, metrics, and logs.

Real-user monitoring (RUM) records how actual traffic behaves. It complements synthetic checks: synthetics can exercise important flows before a release reaches users or in low-traffic areas, while RUM describes real visits. New Relic’s documentation distinguishes these uses.

What each monitoring layer can tell you

Layer Main question Useful evidence What it cannot establish alone
Scheduled endpoint check Is the endpoint reachable and fast enough? Status, basic response time, and optionally a body match. A healthy response does not prove the feature or full workflow works.
Scripted API check Does a service-level transaction behave as expected? Chained requests, carried authentication or state, and status, payload, or timing assertions. It may not cover browser rendering, front-end behavior, or customer interaction issues.
Browser synthetic journey Can a representative user complete a critical flow? Scripted actions such as login or search from a selected location. It tests chosen paths and locations, not every user’s actual traffic.
Distributed tracing Which instrumented services and operations contributed to a request? Trace and span relationships across gateways, backends, databases, and other instrumented services. Instrumentation is required, and a trace does not prove that an external journey is usable.
Real-user monitoring What did actual users experience? Behavior and performance observed from real traffic. Pre-release states and low-traffic areas may not provide enough real requests.

How to choose the right coverage

  • Match the check to the failure. Use endpoint checks for reachability and latency, scripted API checks for response correctness and service-level transactions, browser journeys for user-visible tasks, and traces when you need to diagnose a request across services.
  • Choose the right transaction depth. A single HTTP request is generally simpler to maintain than a stateful API workflow; a browser journey adds UI steps and is more representative of a user task. Reserve browser coverage for flows where the browser experience matters.
  • Run from a relevant vantage point. Public locations can represent user or service regions. Internal services may need a private location or runner inside the network. Confirm that the monitoring product can reach the systems you need to test.
  • Plan the response path. A failed synthetic check detects a problem; metrics, logs, and traces provide context for investigation. Decide where actionable alerts should go and whether selected checks should run during deployments.
  • Check operational constraints. Compare protocol support, run frequency, region selection, private execution, credential handling, CI or CLI triggers, dashboards, integrations, and plan limits against current vendor documentation.

A practical layered setup

  1. Start with important endpoints. Schedule lightweight checks for the endpoints whose availability matters most. Assert an appropriate success status and response-time threshold; add a body assertion when status alone could be misleading.
  2. Cover service-level transactions. Add scripted API workflows for critical transactions, authentication-dependent endpoints, and important third-party dependencies. Assert consumer-relevant outcomes rather than incidental implementation details.
  3. Test a short list of user journeys. Add browser checks for critical tasks such as login or checkout. Avoid turning every API test into a browser test; use this layer where the user-facing experience is important.
  4. Instrument services for diagnosis. Emit traces, metrics, and logs, then use trace context to follow requests across the gateway, backend, database, and other services when an outside-in check fails.
  5. Secure and locate the checks. Run checks from suitable public regions and use private locations or runners for internal services. Store keys and tokens in secure credential mechanisms; do not expose sensitive values in scripts or test artifacts.
  6. Connect failures to action. Route actionable alerts to the team’s on-call workflow, and run selected checks during deployment when detecting release regressions is useful.

  • New Relic Synthetics: Documentation covers simple pings, scripted API monitors, browser monitors, public and private locations, and alerts. Scripted API monitors can chain requests, carry authentication or state, and assert status, payload, and timing. New Relic also distinguishes observations of real traffic from synthetic checks. See its monitor overview and synthetics introduction.
  • Postman Monitors: Monitors can run collections or API specifications on schedules or through Postman CLI. The current documentation lists HTTP, GraphQL, and gRPC requests, with GraphQL and gRPC support marked beta. Private API Monitoring supports internal checks from a team’s network. Minute-based scheduling and manually selecting multiple regions have paid-plan constraints; check the current plan matrix. Postman also documents notifications, dashboards, and integrations for monitor performance data. See Postman’s monitor documentation.
  • OpenTelemetry: OpenTelemetry is an instrumentation framework and ecosystem for observability, not a hosted synthetic-monitoring service. Its concepts are useful for tracing requests and understanding metrics and logs across instrumented services. See the OpenTelemetry observability primer.
