For a production AI agent acting as itself, prefer a managed or workload identity, using short-lived credentials where the destination supports them. Use OAuth when the agent needs access delegated by a person, or when a service supports application-only OAuth and the agent should act under its own authority. Use an API key only when the destination accepts it and you can restrict, protect, and revoke it. In every case, authentication identifies the caller; authorization must still limit what that caller can do.
Choose whose authority the agent needs
Start with the principal—the person, application, or workload the service should recognize. An agent acting as a service should have its own distinct identity. An agent working with a person’s resources should use an approved delegation flow that represents that person’s granted access, rather than receiving the person’s password or impersonating their entire session.
Then check what the destination accepts. A sound authentication design is not useful if the target API does not support its credential type or OAuth grant. The choice is therefore conditional: match the intended authority to both the agent’s runtime and the destination’s authentication options.
How the three methods differ

These are decision dimensions, not a universal security ranking. Actual capabilities depend on the API, provider, OAuth flow, cloud, and agent runtime.

Choose a pattern that fits where and for whom the agent works
Agent running on a supported cloud platform
Prefer the platform’s attached or managed workload identity when the destination supports it. Google Cloud recommends a user-managed service account attached to the resource, with Application Default Credentials (ADC), for production code running on Google Cloud. Give that identity only the access the agent needs; an attached identity is not automatically least-privileged.
Agent running outside the destination cloud
Use workload identity federation if the destination supports the agent’s identity provider. The remote workload presents an identity assertion it already has, which can be exchanged for access without storing a long-lived service-account key. OpenAI documents federation for supported API and Codex workloads, listing AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, and SPIFFE as workload sources. The exchange is available only for supported workloads and services.

Agent accessing a person’s resources
Use an OAuth user-consent or delegation flow with the scopes the person actually authorized. Google describes OAuth Client IDs as a way to identify an application accessing end-user-owned resources. Its MCP guidance describes an OAuth client acting within the authenticated user’s resources and authorized scopes without sharing the user’s actual credentials with the AI application.
Agent acting as itself against a SaaS service
If the SaaS offers OAuth client credentials, that app-only flow can represent the agent under its own authority. Google documents a two-legged OAuth auth-manager flow for external tools, but labels that feature Preview. Verify that the feature is currently available and supported for the specific integration before depending on it.

Service that accepts only an API key
A dedicated API key can be a practical fit when the destination supports keys and does not require a principal-based identity. Restrict it to the required API and permissions, store it in a secret manager or execution boundary, and establish rotation and revocation procedures. Do not put the raw key in prompts, logs, shared agent context, or source control.
Apply identity and credential controls to every method
- Separate identities: Give each production agent a distinct identity rather than reusing a human login or sharing one key across unrelated agents.
- Limit authority: Use the minimum necessary OAuth scopes, IAM roles, resource restrictions, conditions, or equivalent destination controls.
- Prefer short lifetimes: Where supported, obtain or refresh credentials through trusted platform components instead of distributing durable secrets.
- Keep credentials out of model context: Have a gateway or credential manager retrieve and inject credentials at execution time where possible; avoid exposing raw credentials to prompts, memory, tool output, and logs.
- Preserve user context without conflating identities: When acting for a person, pass verifiable claims that represent the authorized user context while keeping the agent’s own identity distinct.
- Plan for accountability and recovery: Log actions distinctly and know how to disable an identity, revoke tokens, and rotate any underlying credential.
AWS’s Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens, AGENTSEC03, states: “Every agent-to-agent and agent-to-service communication authenticates through verifiable mechanisms, whether that is certificate-based mutual TLS, signed OAuth tokens, or platform-managed workload identity.” This reinforces that API keys, OAuth, and workload identity are not the only possible mechanisms; the appropriate verifiable method depends on the connection and supported systems.

Check provider-specific limits before implementation
Google Cloud’s general authentication guidance, updated September 30, 2026, recommends attached user-managed service accounts with ADC for production code on Google Cloud and workload identity federation for workloads running on-premises or in another cloud. It warns that service-account keys can create security risk if not managed correctly and recommends a more secure alternative where possible. Google also notes that standard API keys do not authenticate services that require an IAM principal.
Provider guidance describes that provider’s own products and supported configurations, not a guarantee for every API or connector. Before shipping an integration, verify the destination’s accepted grants, scopes, token lifetime, federation support, and revocation behavior. The official material cited here does not establish a comparable statistic or universal measured ranking for the security or adoption of these three methods.
