An API drift check is only useful later if a reviewer can tell exactly which API descriptions were compared, which rules produced the result, and which CI run made the decision. Preserve those details with the report—not just a green “passed” status.
What an API drift check does—and does not—prove
The OpenAPI Specification (OAS) describes HTTP APIs in a language-agnostic format that can support documentation, code generation, and testing. The current official specification page consulted here is OpenAPI Specification 3.2.1, dated 10 September 2026. As the specification puts it, “The OpenAPI Specification removes guesswork in calling a service.”
For a CI check, “drift” can mean any difference between two API descriptions, or specifically a compatibility-relevant change as classified by the selected comparison tool. Those are different scopes: a full diff can report documentation-only edits, while a breaking-change report is narrower. Comparing descriptions does not, by itself, establish that a running service conforms to either description or that existing clients will behave correctly against it.
Build a reproducible check
- Choose and identify the baseline. Use a deliberate reference, such as a released API description or a repository revision. Record an immutable revision or content digest and the source location. A moving branch name such as
mainis not enough to reproduce a comparison after the branch advances. oasdiff documentation describes Git revisions and local or remote specification inputs. - Identify the candidate. Select or generate the API description produced by the change under review. Validate it separately where appropriate; oasdiff documents both comparison and single-spec validation commands.
- Choose the comparison mode. Decide whether CI needs a breaking-change report, a changelog of breaking and non-breaking changes, or a full diff. Save the command, tool version, and options because comparison modes and settings affect what the report contains.
- Define the decision policy. Specify which findings fail CI, which warn, and which require owner review or an approved exception. That policy belongs to the team; neither the OpenAPI specification nor the cited tool documentation defines a universal pass/fail rule.
- Retain the result with the run. Store the report as a workflow artifact and make it accessible to reviewers. GitHub Actions workflow artifacts are files produced during a workflow run that can persist after the job and be shared.
- Add provenance evidence when needed. For build artifacts where provenance matters, GitHub supports creating and verifying artifact attestations. An attestation can help establish where and how an artifact was built; it does not validate the semantic correctness of the API diff rules.
What to put in the CI receipt
A practical receipt is a record attached to the report and workflow run. Include enough information that someone can repeat the comparison and understand the policy decision:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Inputs: baseline and candidate identifiers, their source locations, and preferably immutable revisions or content digests.
- API-description format: format and version, when known. OpenAPI distinguishes feature versions from patch clarifications, and notes that some behavior can be undefined or implementation-defined; record the version rather than assuming descriptions with similar labels behave identically.
- Comparison rules: tool name and pinned version, command or mode, relevant configuration, and exclusions or normalization options.
- Run identity: repository revision, workflow and job identity, triggering event, timestamp, and exit status.
- Decision and evidence: pass, fail, warning, or approved exception; a retained report; and, if useful, its digest or attestation reference.
This is a practical checklist, not an industry-standard receipt schema. A bare “passed” result is hard to audit later because it does not identify the inputs or rules behind the decision.
Where comparison results can differ
Do not assume every breaking-change detector interprets every pair of specifications the same way. Results depend on supported formats, the baseline selected, endpoint matching, normalization, configured checks, and how the tool handles details such as nullability, external references, or extensions. Inspect the selected tool’s documented rules and record options that can change classification. The oasdiff options documentation describes controls relevant to comparison behavior.

If you are choosing an approach, compare it against the needs of your workflow rather than relying on an unsupported “best tool” ranking:
- Can you trace both inputs to durable revisions or digests?
- Does it support your description format and version?
- Do its breaking-change checks cover the compatibility risks you care about?
- Can you pin and reproduce the tool version, configuration, and invocation?
- Can CI enforce your failure policy and retain a readable report?
- Do you need provenance controls for the report or related build artifact?
The cited documentation establishes implementation options, not a neutral benchmark comparing tools. Select based on documented capabilities and your own contract policy.

FAQ
Does a passing diff prove current API clients will not break?
No. It means the selected comparison ran and the configured policy accepted its result. What that says about compatibility depends on the baseline, tool rules, and policy; it is not a general guarantee of runtime conformance or client behavior.
Is an artifact attestation the same as an API compatibility check?
No. GitHub describes attestations as evidence about where and how software was built. They can support provenance verification, but they do not establish that a comparison’s semantic rules were correct.
